Eerie ghost town on fringe of Las Vegas thousands flock to every year

Daily Mirror19 hours ago
Goodsprings, Nevada, is a ghost town located just 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas - and it's proving incredibly popular with tourists, with thousands flocking in each year
Located in the middle of nowhere and allegedly haunted, the ghost town of Goodsprings is far from the most obvious tourist destination.

Coupled with its proximity to the dazzling lights of Las Vegas, it would be easy for Goodsprings to be overlooked. But, despite its spooky history and sparse amenities, the town finds itself subject to thousands of visitors every year.

Just half an hour away from the city's bustling strip and vibrant nightlife, life in Goodsprings could not be more different. Home to around 200 residents, this quiet town at the base of the Spring Mountains in the Nevada desert was once a bustling mining hub.

In its heyday in the early 1900s, it housed 800 inhabitants and boasted amenities such as a hospital, hotels and a school - which remarkably still operates today, albeit with only two pupils on its roll. However, as the ore reserves in the Goodsprings mines dwindled, so did its populace.
In 1942, the town served as the base for a special search mission following the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of actress Carole Lombard. Her aircraft crashed into Potosi Mountain, and her husband, Hollywood legend Clark Gable, anxiously awaited news at Goodsprings' Pioneer Saloon.

It's said that Gable's cigar burns can still be seen on the Saloon's bar to this day. Consequently, there's a memorial room at the Pioneer honouring its connection to the iconic couple.
Today, Goodsprings has a somewhat eerie aura. A drive through the town on its dusty roads evokes a spooky feeling.

Often the subject of folk tales and ghost hunts, Reddit users have shared their experiences of visiting the town. One stated: "When I went to Goodsprings a few years back with my wife, it was completely dead.
"No one was outside or driving around, it looked like a wild west ghost town that time had forgotten".
Despite its remote location, the owners of the Pioneer Saloon are eager to provide a warm welcome to visitors. Stephen Staats, also known as Old Man Liver, purchased the iconic pub in 2021 and discovered Goodsprings' unique place in pop culture.

The town serves as the starting point for the cult classic video game Fallout: New Vegas, which features the main character revived after being buried alive in Goodsprings cemetery. Many of the game's characters are based on real-life residents, and the Pioneer itself is featured in the game, rebranded as the Prospector Saloon.
Recognising the town's popularity, Staats hosted a Fallout-themed event on National Video Game Day, July 8, in 2022. He expected "maybe 100 in a crazy world", but was taken aback when more than a thousand fans showed up.

Since then, it has grown year on year, and following the launch of the acclaimed Amazon Prime Video series based off the game, 6,420 people visited Goodsprings in 2024. Fallout fans have praised the town's atmosphere and welcoming spirit on Reddit, with one saying: "The locals love it, and it's kind of their only form of tourism."
Another, who visited before Staats took over the Pioneer, said: "They were incredibly friendly and welcoming both times I went, and there's even a marble wall inscribed with the town's residents since it's founding, movies and TV shows that have filmed there, all sorts of stuff."
With a second season of the Amazon Prime show greenlit and likely to be set in and around 'New Vegas', Goodsprings could become an unlikely destination to rival the dazzling city that casts its wide shadow over the Nevada desert.

I bought a children's toy, but the instructions were in Chinese...can you figure out what it is supposed to be?

Doctor's kits, construction tools, and kitchen sets are often very common items in the toy aisle. But as the years go on, they seem to get more and more intricate, and without an instruction manual it can be difficult to discern what exactly your child is playing with. That's the problem a parent on Reddit ran into before uploading a photo to the site's 'What is this thing' thread. FlakyPhilosophy5103 posted the picture in hopes of getting to the bottom of a toy box mystery that had been bothering them for months. Along with a picture of two colorful children's toys, the poster wrote: 'Is anyone able to help me know what these things are supposed to be please? It has been bugging me for months. 'The kit was in Chinese so I am none the wiser.' They described the small plastic items as a 'scraper' and a 'round item' which came in a child's doctor kit. Fortunately, parents flocked to the comment section to help the parent identify exactly which fictitious procedures their child would be performing with the mysterious plastic tools. At first, there were a couple of well-meaning, but totally off-base guesses. One user commented: 'Could the blue thing be one of those reflex hammers?' Another theorized: 'Maybe the blue thing is a strange tongue depressor? Like, with a funky angle to get the large handle out of the line of sight, from before disposables?' A third said: 'The pink thing looks like the eye test where the doc switches out lenses.' One person even though the pink round object and blue plastic toy could be a dental X-ray machine and tooth guard. But the overwhelming consensus took the right answer in a different direction. Comparing the items to play doctor's kits online and toys of their own, as always, Reddit commenters were able to get to the bottom of it. 'I think the blue thing is supposed to be a scalpel,' said one answer. The commenters confirmed that the pink toy was supposed to be a doctor's light 'It's a surgery light and a scalpel, we have the same kit,' said another. People uploaded photos of similar kits which labeled the items as a scalpel and a spotlight, confirming their theories. The original asker posted a response, confirming that the solution had been found: 'Solved! Thanks all. It seems scalpel and surgery light is the answer. Maybe I can listen properly next time she is playing rather than wondering!'

Love Island fans uncover villa girl's gameplan as they say ‘she's not into him at all' about love interest

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOVE Island fans have become convinced that one couple are set to split after leaving the villa – after picking up on the girl's 'gameplan'. With the series finale coming tomorrow, the last few days of the villa have seen the islanders begin to lock down their romances. Throw in differing lifestyles, and some are thinking that they could already be on the way out. A Reddit poster explained: 'Hear me out. Angel is a fairly big Instagram influencer, who if you look at her instagram seems to be all about the boujee life. 'Her entire feed is her hanging with super stunning models all with huge followings on yachts in Spain, ski trips in the French Alps, constant trips to Dubai and seems to be living a pretty expensive glamorous life.' 'Ty is a sweetheart but does seem just like a genuine working class guy from a normal background,' they added. 'Absolutely nothing wrong with that, I just find it hard to believe this is the type of guy Angel is genuinely interested in with the lifestyle she projects on Instagram.' They added that 'girls who live that lifestyle seem to often be looking for a certain type of man', and continued: 'Last night's episode was when I really noticed it most. 'There is a certain distance in the way she connects with him, especially when he asked her to go exclusive, everything is just kind of wafty and airy in her voice and doesn't seem real or passionate about anything he has to say.' 'I believe she is a huge game player like Dejon but isn't as dumb as him to make it so obvious to those in the villa or the public,' they concluded, saying she "goes with the flow and doesn't cause drama", allowing Angel to skirt through. Other posters quickly picked up on the moment, and agreed that something about Angel and Ty's romance didn't feel authentic. 'Not gonna lie, I don't buy Angel's act at all. She was definitely eyeing up Harry from the jump, but obviously wanted to secure a spot in Meg's little 'mother hen' squad for that protection,' replied one. 'And because she rocked up late, she just clung to Ty as a safe bet. 'Get her out' rant Love Island fans as they call for 'sly' star to be kicked off the show 'Half the stuff Angel says is just silly, like she's trying to be something, but ends up being absolutely nothing.' 'I thought she liked him up until last night, when he asked her to go exclusive,' agreed a second. 'Like you said her reaction was very wishy washy. 'However in saying that they are quite fresh, so maybe she was just taken aback by how soon it was. 'Ty was also really her only option, and it just so happened he was single at the time.' 'When they leave the villa, he'll be in the influencer lifestyle too so I think they'll last whilst they're riding the fame, and whilst they're all in London constantly for events and interviews and stuff,' noted a third. 'And when the love island 2025 hype dies down, those break up statements will be out on instagram 😂' Others commented on the fact that she claimed that distance would be an issue for them as they start their relationship – asking 'why that was an issue when she travels the world but can travel 150 miles to Barnsley' where Ty's based. Ty and Angel are within breathing distance of the finish line, with the finale airing tomorrow night and a new winning couple being crowned. However, their position in the finale isn't secured just yet, with one last shock dumping set to rock the villa in scenes set to air tonight. The remaining couples still in the villa are: Ty and Angel, Meg and Dejon, Toni and Cach, Shakira and Harry, and Yasmin and Jamie. Who will be our top four for this year? Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2. 6 Angel often boasts about the multiple countries she visits on Instagram Credit: instagram 6 Will Ty and Angel survive in the outside world?

New Mario game kept me up until 1am – it's a perfect multiplayer title for kids this summer or late nights with pals

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A GREAT measure for a game is when it's so fun, you completely lose track of time. Ticking that box is Nintendo's revamped Super Mario Party Jamboree, which kept not only me but six pals awake until 1am. If you've got kids, this is an absolute dream family title. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 11 Super Mario Party Jamboree is a favourite at home Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun 11 It's a brilliant Mario-themed party game Credit: Nintendo 11 The game has been upgraded for the new Nintendo Switch 2 Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun The game actually came out in October 2024, but it's just been upgraded for the new Nintendo Switch 2. WHAT IS SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE? This new version has some extra modes and mini-games, but it's largely the same game. Super Mario Party Jamboree (Nintendo Switch 2), £66.99 And it really is a good game. If you're new to the Mario Party franchise, it's basically a giant collection of mini-games with very low barriers to entry. You can just pick it up and play. It's fine to play solo, although it's way better if you've got someone else with you. We had friends visit recently, and it kept us up late into the night. It's moreish, like spicy crisps. Or most other Mario games. If you've ever played Jackbox Games, Mario Party serves a similar purpose. It's packed with loads of Mario-themed mini-games. Some of them demand speedy reactions, while others will challenge your memory. And some even involve physical movement – like flapping your arms in the air while holding the Joy-Con controllers to fly. If you're alone then you'll play against the computer. The Sun tries new Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart before it's out But with friends, you can take on each other – or even team up – in a bid to win. SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE GAMEPLAY The good thing is that all of the games are very simple. There are dozens on offer, and you'll easily pick any of them up in seconds. And they're all bright, colourful challenges where you'll play as (and alongside) iconic Mario characters. 11 You'll explore Mario's world and enjoy loads of mini-games Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun 11 Playing with friends makes it even more fun – especially if you have the camera accessory Credit: Nintendo One fun game saw me collecting coins on shifting sands. Spiky bars rolled right at me, so I had to quickly sidestep or leap in the air to dodge them. Another had me yanking bread out of an oven – but only once it had baked to perfection. Too soon? No coins! You can enjoy a sort of 'Grand Prix' of mini-game series, so you'll earn points after a few rounds – and then see who came out on top. If you've got four people playing at once, it's very high energy. This is great for a child's party, or an adult's party for that matter. 11 It's bright and colourful, and extremely easy to pick up Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game has some clever upgrades. They're mostly tucked into a new section of the game called Jamboree TV. One of the main differences here is a set of games built for mouse-style controls. That's made possible by the Switch 2's upgraded Joy-Cons, which can be placed on a surface to work just like a computer mouse. Picture Credit: 11 It's fun for players of all ages – even if you've never really played video games before Credit: Nintendo But it's worth noting that mouse control games require a single Joy-Con per person and a surface. Oh, and you can't use the Pro Controller for those games either, as it doesn't have mouse functionality. If you have the Nintendo camera accessory (keep in mind, this is £50!), you can play three games that make use of it. It's a bit like the old Xbox Kinect camera system. One involves following physical commands, which is fun if you like moving around. Probably the best is Goombalancing Act, where you try not to drop Goombas balancing on top of your head. 11 There are dozens of mini-games to play Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun So what's bad? Well, there are a few downsides. It took me quite a while to actually get playing. I'd say there's a good five minutes of unskippable content before you can start. It's not the end of the world, but I'd rather have just been able to get going right away. As well as that, the game has a £66.99 price tag attached. So you'll want to make sure you're going to get enough use out of it. IS SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE WORTH BUYING? It's always tempting to just stick on Mario Kart. And the new Mario Kart World is very good. 11 Some of the games make use of the Joy-Con mouse feature Credit: Nintendo In fact, it's probably enough reason to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 alone. But Super Mario Party Jamboree is a great alternative with loads of variety, and sparks a bit more chat than a regular Mario Kart game. You're also far less likely to see major skill differences on this versus Mario Kart. Rather than one person always winning, you might be good at one mini-game and rubbish at the next. 11 You'll recognise loads of classic Mario characters Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun There's loads of variety so you won't get bored. And it's simple enough for basically anyone to play – even people who aren't used to holding game controllers. This really is as close as it gets to "fun for the whole family". It's not exactly cheap at £67, but if you snap it up now, you'll probably get loads of play-time in over summer. And then again at Christmas. The Sun says: One of the best "family" games out there – but it's perfect for a night with friends too. A mini-game treasure trove that will hook Mario fans, and convert everyone else. 4.5/5 Super Mario Party Jamboree (Nintendo Switch 2), £66.99 11 Nintendo fans will get hours of fun from Super Mario Party Jamboree Credit: Nintendo All prices in this article were correct at the time of writing, but may have since changed.
