An off-grid
green hydrogen plant
is a facility that produces hydrogen using electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, and is not connected to the main electrical grid. This means the plant relies entirely on its own renewable energy generation for the hydrogen production process.
The 5 MW plant has been built by
Adani New Industries Limited
(ANIL) - the clean energy unit under the group's flagship firm
Adani Enterprises Ltd.
Calling it a key milestone towards enabling India's
National Green Hydrogen Mission
, the group said the successful commissioning demonstrates technical feasibility and sets a benchmark for off-grid, renewable-powered industrial applications of green hydrogen and its derivatives in emissions-intensive sectors.
"The state-of-the-art plant is 100 per cent green-powered by solar energy and integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling it to operate completely off-grid. This represents a new paradigm in decentralised, renewable-powered hydrogen production," the statement said.
Hydrogen is the lightest and most abundant element in the universe. It is also the cleanest form of energy, producing just water vapour when burnt.
Hydrogen is colour-coded based on how it's produced and the associated environmental impact. When produced from fossil fuels, it is grey. Green hydrogen is produced when electricity produced from renewable sources such as solar or wind power is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
ANIL is developing large-scale production facilities for green hydrogen and its derivatives through an integrated end-to-end ecosystem. This includes producing green hydrogen and its derivative products, such as green ammonia, green methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, and manufacturing solar cells, ingots & wafers, solar modules, wind turbine generators, and electrolysers at
Mundra
, Gujarat, to meet the demand across diverse sectors in both domestic and international markets.
The ANIL pilot plant is India's first off-grid 5 MW green hydrogen facility featuring a fully automated, closed-loop electrolyser system designed to respond dynamically to real-time renewable energy inputs. This provides valuable operational flexibility, particularly in addressing the variability of solar power, while ensuring efficiency, safety and performance.
"This breakthrough reinforces the Adani Group's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and leadership in the emerging green hydrogen economy. It supports India's ambition to become a global hub for green hydrogen production and sets a benchmark for renewable-powered industrial applications across hard-to-abate sectors," the statement said.
The pilot also serves as a proof of concept ahead of ANIL's upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Mundra, Gujarat - a key project that will contribute significantly to India's low-carbon future. Green hydrogen is expected to play a vital role in decarbonising sectors such as fertilisers, refining and heavy transport - and in achieving global net-zero targets.
The initiative is aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission (
NGHM
), a flagship Government of India programme that aims to reduce import dependence, enhance energy self-sufficiency and accelerate the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries - all in fulfilment of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

India awards 862,000 TPA green hydrogen capacity, eyes 10% of global demand
India has awarded 862,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen production capacity to 19 companies under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Naik announced at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Green Hydrogen Summit 2025 on Tuesday. Speaking at the event in New Delhi, Naik outlined India's ambition to capture about 10% of the global green hydrogen demand, projected to exceed 100 million metric tonnes by 2030. 'We want to make India not only a major producer but also a global hub for green hydrogen exports,' he said. The government has also allocated 3,000 megawatts of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 companies, Naik added. The minister highlighted India's renewable energy capacity as a foundation for its hydrogen plans. As of June 2025, India's cumulative renewable energy capacity stood at 237 gigawatts (GW), including 119 GW from solar, 52 GW from wind, and 49 GW from large hydro. Including 8.78 GW of nuclear power, non-fossil fuel sources account for more than half of India's total installed generation capacity. 'This is a matter of immense pride that we have achieved this key NDC target five years ahead of schedule,' Naik said, reiterating the target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Industry leaders at the summit underscored recent developments. Rajat Seksaria, Chair of FICCI's Green Hydrogen Committee and CEO of Adani New Industries, highlighted three key steps the government has taken to support the green hydrogen industry: the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, the ongoing green ammonia auction, and the government's continued engagement with the sector. Vipul Tuli, Chair of FICCI's Renewable Energy CEOs Committee and Chairman of Sembcorp India, pointed out a shift in the cost dynamics of green hydrogen. 'In one of the global tenders, green hydrogen has actually come out cheaper than blue hydrogen. This is a very significant development,' he said. However, he cautioned that the industry should focus on sustainable, long-term commitments rather than just chasing low prices. On international cooperation, Ewa Suwara, Chargé d'affaires of the EU Delegation to India, said that following the second India-EU Green Hydrogen Forum in Rotterdam in May 2025, both sides had agreed to establish a Hydrogen Task Force. 'Both the EU and India are well aware of the potential of green hydrogen in addressing today's and tomorrow's energy challenges,' she said. During the summit, the minister also released the FICCI-EY Green Hydrogen Report: India's Green Hydrogen Ecosystem. The report emphasises the critical role of demand from hard-to-abate industries like refining, steel, aviation, and fertilisers in creating a sustainable green hydrogen market. It further outlines priority use-cases, procurement models, cost dynamics, and actionable steps to stimulate demand.

India aspires to capture 10% of the global demand for green hydrogen, which is expected to exceed 100 MMT by 2030, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik said on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). He said the ambition is to make India a major producer of green hydrogen and a global hub of its export. Speaking at an event by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Naik said that this ambition would require the country to continue innovating to 'strengthen certification and trading mechanism(s), ensure offtake certainty and unlocking green finance through instruments as viability gap funding, green bonds, and multilateral bank support.' Green Hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced using renewable energy sources like solar, wind or hydropower. Herein, the electricity generated is utilised to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Launched in 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aspires to turn Indian into a global hub for production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. Mr. Naik argued that, with technological advances in the realm of solar photovoltaic (PV), offshore wind and electrolyser efficiency, the cost of producing hydrogen was already coming down, and is expected to continue doing so. Earlier in his address, the MoS had pointed to integration, storage solutions, land availability and cost competitiveness being 'critical areas of focus'. 'However, these challenges are solvable,' he stated. Private sector playing a pioneering role The Minister of State said that the private sector was essaying a 'pioneering role' in the green hydrogen sector. He observed Indian companies are building gigascale projects, electrolyser manufacturing facilities, pilot projects for hydrogen mobility and blending and refuelling infrastructure. 'Many are also forging global partnerships to ensure cost competitiveness and position India as a reliable exporter in a global market expected to exceed 100 MMT by 2030,' he stated. Use of Green Hydrogen in critical sectors Mr. Naik enumerated that the government has launched pilot projects, exploring the direct use of green hydrogen, in critical sectors, as steel, transport and shipping. 23 projects have been sanctioned as part of their research and development initiatives, with more than 100 being evaluated for establishing centre of excellence. The Union Minister further enumerated about setting up of green hydrogen testing facility in the country. He informed that 3 projects have been awarded. Furthermore, Mr. Naik stated, that more than one hundred green hydrogen standards and protocols have been adopted or are under development to ensure 'safety and quality'.
