LSU baseball's Steven Milam talks West Virginia win: 'I love the big moment'
Steven Milam put LSU baseball on his back during the Baton Rouge Super Regional against West Virginia.
Saturday and Sunday against the Mountaineers, the sophomore infielder made his plate appearances count. With a mix of power and patience at the plate, Milam finished the series with eight RBI and credits "getting back to the basics" for his success.
"I love the big moment," Milam said. "I didn't play or help my team as much as I wanted to during the year and I had to step up to take pressure off the other guys. I feel like I've been able to do that."
Milam put the Tigers up big with a grand slam in Saturday's fifth inning then stroked two doubles on Sunday. He finished with two walks in each game, bringing his on-base percentage to .395 for the year.
"He went out there and competed his tail off and really did a good job," LSU first baseman Jared Jones said. "He was just himself this weekend and he did a great job for us and go the momentum in our dugout."
The Tigers only hope Milam's success continues now that they claimed a berth in the College World Series and learned they will open against No. 3 seed Arkansas.
"Our whole team is running great at bats one through nine," Milam said. "You can punch in 15 different guys, and we're going to beat you," Milam said.
This wasn't Milam's first time appearing in a big moment. In the 2024 SEC Tournament, Milam delivered a big home run that was instrumental in LSU securing an NCAA Tournament appearance.
"This is why you come to LSU."

Date announced for annual Michigan State Madness event

Michigan State basketball has announced the date for its annual Michigan State Madness event. Michigan State Madness will be held on October 3, with the doors expected to open at 8 p.m. ET. Michigan State Madness is the annual preseason event held by the Spartans' men's and women's basketball programs that includes open practice, player contests and fun themed entrances. This is essentially the event previously known as midnight madness. Michigan State Madness is considered a celebration of the start of the college basketball season, which will officially start in early November with the first regular season games taking place. Admission is free for the event. Both the men's and women's basketball teams are coming off strong seasons last year, with both reaching the NCAA Tournament. Similar expectations are in play again for both teams as we look ahead to the 2025-26 season. Click here to see the complete details on the event from Michigan State. Game 123 Preview: Tigers open up 4-game series at Minnesota behind Skubal

The Detroit Tigers are coming off their second-straight series win, thanks to a two-games-to-one victory over the Chicago White Sox this week in the Windy City. The good guys continue their road swing this weekend against another American League Central rival. The Minnesota Twins will host the Motor City Kitties over the next four days at Target Field looking to extend the success they had in Detroit a couple of weeks ago when they took a three-game series from the home team. The Twinkies have split their last six games since then, taking two of three from the Kansas City Royals before falling in three games at the New York Yankees, but are 6-4 over their last 10 including the triumph over the Tigers — but have a minus-33 run differential. The Olde English D meanwhile maintains its division lead by 6.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians while sitting seven games behind the Milwaukee Brewers — who are running away with things right now — for the best record in Major League Baseball. Detroit has split its last 10 games evenly and has the seventh-best run differential overall at plus-76. On Thursday evening, the best pitcher in baseball, Tarik Skubal, takes the hill for the Tigers while Bailey Ober climbs the mound for the Twins. Keep in mind, last time Ober faced this team on June 28, Detroit thrashed him for seven runs on 11 hits — including four home runs — and one walk while striking out five over 5 2/3 frames. West Virginia athletic department agrees to partnership with local mulch company

On the same day Kansas received a record-breaking $300 million donation, one of the Jayhawks' Big 12 counterparts secured a deal of its own. West Virginia has agreed to a multi-year partnership with Grant County Mulch that makes the company the official mulch supplier of the Mountaineers' athletic department, the university announced August 13. Based in Petersburg, West Virginia, about 90 miles southeast of West Virginia's Morgantown campus, Grant County Mulch is the largest bulk mulch supplier in the country, according to the Mountaineers' release. REQUIRED READING: Kansas receives record-setting $300 million gift from donor David Booth As part of the newly inked and undeniably unique agreement — after all, how many colleges have an official mulch supplier? — Grant County Mulch will be racing a West Virginia-themed truck in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at the Richmond Raceway in Virginia on August 15. The truck is owned by CR7 Motorsports and will be driven by Grant Enfinger. Beyond the company's logo being displayed on LED boards at football and basketball games, as well as on the outfield wall at baseball games, the Mountaineers' post-game radio show for football and men's basketball will award a 'Tough as Mulch' player of the game. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Both of us — and our parents — were born and raised in West Virginia, so this partnership means more than business to us," Larry and Janie Berg, founders of Grant County Mulch, said in a statement. "It's about honoring our roots, supporting our home state, and being part of something that represents the pride and spirit of West Virginians everywhere."
