LSU baseball's Steven Milam talks West Virginia win: 'I love the big moment'
Steven Milam put LSU baseball on his back during the Baton Rouge Super Regional against West Virginia.
Saturday and Sunday against the Mountaineers, the sophomore infielder made his plate appearances count. With a mix of power and patience at the plate, Milam finished the series with eight RBI and credits "getting back to the basics" for his success.
"I love the big moment," Milam said. "I didn't play or help my team as much as I wanted to during the year and I had to step up to take pressure off the other guys. I feel like I've been able to do that."
Milam put the Tigers up big with a grand slam in Saturday's fifth inning then stroked two doubles on Sunday. He finished with two walks in each game, bringing his on-base percentage to .395 for the year.
"He went out there and competed his tail off and really did a good job," LSU first baseman Jared Jones said. "He was just himself this weekend and he did a great job for us and go the momentum in our dugout."
The Tigers only hope Milam's success continues now that they claimed a berth in the College World Series and learned they will open against No. 3 seed Arkansas.
"Our whole team is running great at bats one through nine," Milam said. "You can punch in 15 different guys, and we're going to beat you," Milam said.
This wasn't Milam's first time appearing in a big moment. In the 2024 SEC Tournament, Milam delivered a big home run that was instrumental in LSU securing an NCAA Tournament appearance.
"This is why you come to LSU."

Westburg, Urias power Orioles to 10-1 win over Tigers

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jordan Westburg hit a three-run homer during a seven-run eighth inning and the Baltimore Orioles pulled away to a 10-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Zach Eflin (6-2) allowed a run over 6 2/3 innings for his third consecutive victory. Keegan Akin struck out pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones to strand two and escape the seventh when it was a one-run game. Ramón Urías hit a two-run shot off Casey Mize (5-3) before the Orioles got going against the Tigers' bullpen. Gunnar Henderson singled in a run off Tyler Holton in the seventh. Then Cedric Mullin got the eighth started with an RBI double off Brenan Hanifee before scoring on a wild pitch. Ryan O'Hearn followed with a two-run double off Beau Brieske, before Westburg hooked Brieske's 1-0 offering around the left-field foul pole. Colt Keith provided the Tigers' run on an RBI double that struck high off the out-of-town scoreboard in right. Mize (6-2) struck out seven and walked two over 5 1/3 innings. Key moment After Keith's double cut it to 2-1, Detroit inserted Dillon Dingler to pinch hit with runners on second and third. Eflin induced Dingler into a sharp grounder to third, and Urías fired home in plenty of time for Adley Rutschman to tag out Wenceel Perez as the potential tying run. Key stat Eflin has now posted a 1.47 ERA in three career starts against the Tigers (18 1/3 IP, 3 ER). Up next Detroit's reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal (6-2, 2.16 ERA) looks for his first consecutive wins since mid-April after allowing only one run across his last three starts (23 2/3 IP). The lefty faces Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer (5-6, 4.98), who walked a season-high four batters and allowed five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a 7-0 loss at Detroit on April 27. ___ AP MLB:

Remembering the SMS Bears in the 2003 College World Series

Hello everyone, I'm Dan Lucy on the Ozarks First digital desk. And one big sports story this week was Murray State beating Duke in an NCAA Super Regional. That gave the Racers a ticket to the College World Series in Omaha. Murray State becomes the first Valley team to make it to Omaha since the Southwest Missouri State Bears back in 2003. I thought it was time to break out Danny's Way Back Machine. Periodically we'll crank up the Way Back Machine, blow off the dust from some file tape, and show you what it looked like back in the day. So we take you back to June of 2003, the Southwest Missouri State Bears baseball team was on a roll. After winning the Valley's regular season, the Bears earned an at-large berth to the Lincoln regional in the NCAA tournament. SMS beat Coastal Carolina in the opening game 8-3. Then the Bears took two of three from Nebraska to earn a trip to the Super Regional in Columbus, Ohio. In Columbus, Southwest Missouri State swept the home town Buckeyes 13-8 and 13-7. Evidently 13 was a lucky number for coach Keith Guttin and the Bears. So the crew went off to Omaha with a roster full of talent. Shaun Marcum, Brad Ziegler and Jeff Gray eventually made it to the major leagues. And a first baseman named Scott Nasby, became the baseball coach at Drury. The Bears played Rice in the first game at the College World Series. Greg Mathis hit a home run for the Bears but Rice won the game 4-2. SMS faced Miami in the elimination game, the Hurricanes built a big lead, but the Bears battled back. Shaun Marcum belted a three run homer late to make Miami nervous, but the Hurricanes beat SMS 7-to-5. But it was an historic run for Keith Guttin and the Southwest Missouri State Bears. The team won 40 games, the Valley's regular season championship, and advanced further than any other baseball team in Missouri State history. So I hope you enjoyed your trip through the Way Back Machine to the year 2003. MoState still has a few weeks left in the Valley conference, enough time to cheer on Murray State in Omaha at the College World Series. For more sports watch Ozarks First news at nine and ten. And I'll see you then. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
