Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Commentary (Updated April 25, 2025): Will Jeremy Allen White make it three in a row? Or will Martin Short finally get his very own acting statuette?
For the moment, Martin Short might have the edge. The beloved comedian and past Emmy winner ('AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Mel Brooks' in 2014 for variety special and writing for 'SCTV Network' in 1983) shines in Hulu's romp 'Only Murders in the Building,' where his theatrical flair and impeccable timing as Oliver Putnam continues to win over both audiences and voters, proven by his SAG win earlier this year. With three consecutive nominations for this role, Short could finally secure a long-overdue acting win, solidifying his place among television's comedy greats. It can also come down to whether or not his co-star Steve Martin factors into the conversation, after missing out once in this race, the two could vote-split, leaving an opportunity for others to rise.
Two-time consecutive Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White is a strong contender to win again for his performance in FX's 'The Bear.' A person hasn't won three consecutive years in this category since Michael J. Fox for 'Family Ties' (1986-1988). While the third season's reviews didn't ignite the same passion as its two previous predecessors, the acting has remained a consistent highlight.
Actors from the freshman shows could also make a significant impact this season. Seth Rogen has garnered attention for his role in Apple TV+'s 'The Studio,' where he plays a neurotic showrunner navigating the chaos of Hollywood. Though he is more commonly known for his film work, Rogen's performance has impressed critics. It could earn him his second acting nomination following 2022's miniseries 'Pam & Tommy' in supporting actor (limited).
Additionally, Adam Brody shines in Netflix's romantic comedy 'Nobody Wants This,' portraying a charming rabbi in a relationship with an agnostic woman. He won his first major award at the Critics Choice Awards earlier this year, and that could be a much-needed boost to propel him forward in the race.
Other contenders include Ted Danson, an 11-time Emmy nominee and two-time winner (for 'Cheers' in 1990 and 1991), who returns in Netflix's spy comedy 'A Man on the Inside,' Jason Segel in Apple TV+'s delightful and moving dramedy 'Shrinking,' and past nominees and darlings such as Steve Carell ('The Four Seasons') and Matt Berry ('What We Do in the Shadows').

During an interview with Parade, actresses Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan addressed the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reboot — which was confirmed to be in the works for Hulu earlier this year — but the stars remained mum on details. But Gellar flipped on the idea after hearing Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao's plan for the series' continuation. 'The passion that [she] came to me with, what she wanted to do with the show and the character, and why 'Buffy' is needed now — it was the first time where I thought, 'OK, there's a reason,'' Gellar told Elite Daily. In the same interview, she said the revival had been in the work for four years. 'We won't do it unless it's 100 percent right and there's 100 percent a reason,' she added. One place fans will not see Gellar is in the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel, out July 18. The reboot's director said that Gellar resisted the idea of a return. 'I tried, OK? I harassed her! But she is dead,' Robinson told Entertainment Weekly. 'I tried to pitch some crazy shit too. I was like, 'What if it's like you weren't dead and you're actually alive, but in hiding?' And Sarah's like, 'I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.' I was like, 'Yeah, but what if?' And she said, 'I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar.'' NEW YORK − They "Meet" again! "Meet the Parents" director Jay Roach and stars Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro and Teri Polo reunited on Saturday, June 7, at Tribeca Film Festival for a 25th anniversary screening of the classic 2000 comedy. During a post-screening panel discussion, they teased the upcoming "Meet the Parents 4" and confirmed Ariana Grande has joined the cast. John Hamburg, who co-wrote the three previous films, will direct the new sequel. "What spurred the idea was that at this point in time, I'm the age that (De Niro) was when we did the first movie," Stiller, 59, said. "It felt like this mirror to the first film in terms of the fact that my kids are grown, and one of my kids is thinking about introducing his person to the family." But the actor added that there had to be a "reason to make" another sequel, and "this new point in our lives, where the characters are, felt like it really was an organic reason." While he said he's thinking of the fourth movie as a "new thing," Stiller said it will also benefit from the audience's relationship with the characters. Join our Watch Party! "There's something that's kind of emotional about it for me, for the actors: the connection that people have with the movies." Stiller starred in the original "Meet the Parents" as Greg Focker, who meets his girlfriend Pam's (Polo) mother (Blythe Danner) and father (De Niro) while getting ready to propose to her, only for absolutely everything possible to go wrong. It spawned two sequels: 2004's "Meet the Fockers" and 2010's "Little Fockers." De Niro praised the script for the fourth film as "really good." He also recalled telling Stiller and Hamburg they should start working on another sequel while on the set of "Little Fockers." "They said, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, sure, sure.' They were humoring me," De Niro said. "They didn't want to do it. But it was fine. And now, finally, we are doing another one." Roach noted that the relatable predicament made the original "Meet the Parents" work, and he teased that Hamburg has come up with a similarly great setup for the fourth film. "Everybody's going to love squirming through it, just like they did the old ones," he said. And with Grande joining the family, Stiller joked, "The name of the movie is 'Wicked 3.' During rehearsals, he had just met his future wife, actress Christine Taylor, and decided he was going to propose to her "Her parents lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and her dad owned a security company," Stiller said. "We had to go back for her grandfather's funeral, and I found myself in the basement of her house with her father after the funeral telling him that I loved his daughter and wanted to marry her. It was good research for the movie." 'People are seeing me' for first time: Ariana Grande on taking off the pop star mask Stiller also noted that to this day, people still scream Focker, his character's last name, at him in public "all the time." "I don't dislike it. It's just when someone yells 'Focker,' it doesn't necessarily feel respectful," he quipped. Polo recalled joining the film shortly before filming began and remembered thinking during her screen test that "if I mess this up, I will never forgive myself. I will never have this chance again." She added, "It was an amazing, amazing experience, and I thought it would never happen again. And now look at us."

Jonathan Bailey Recalls Awkward Moment In "Wicked"
Jonathan Bailey has admitted he and his Wicked co-star Ariana Grande had a bit of an awkward moment when they were still getting to know one another. The British actor plays Fieryo in both Wicked and its much-hyped sequel, shooting both films back-to-back in a rather hectic time for his career, during which he was also making the TV shows Bridgerton and Fellow Travellers. As a result, Jonathan told British GQ that his rehearsal time on the movie was rather limited, with the Emmy nominee having just three days to prepare before filming began. 'I remember having four hours to learn how to do a dance move,' he explained. 'I did it with Ari, headbutted her, and was like, 'Gotta go!'' He quipped: 'I think she might have even headbutted me, but it was a meeting of minds, literally.' Fortunately, despite the literal tête-à-tête, he and the "Twilight Zone" singer went on to forge a strong friendship, at one point even attending Wimbledon together during their Wicked downtime. Last year, Jonathan spoke candidly about the toll that shooting multiple projects at the same time took on one particular aspect of his appearance. He claimed that having a perm for Bridgerton and a straight do for Fellow Travellers left his hair 'looking like coral' – and as a result, he had to sport a 'big old toupée' to play Fiyero in Wicked. 'I'm in the choreography so it's flapping about!' he joked to Variety during an Actors On Actors interview with Naomi Watts. Wicked For Good sees Jonathan once again sharing the screen with the likes of Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh, in the movie adaptation of the stage musical's second act. The first trailer for the sequel was released on Wednesday night, ahead of its worldwide release on Friday 21 November.
