
Consumption of raw milk is increasing among the self-proclaimed health conscious but is it safe?
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The "Eat Local" and unprocessed food movements have led to a lot of people seeking out what they think are healthier, more natural options.
Many skip pasteurized milk in the grocery store and go right to the source for raw milk. The website Get Raw Milke shows more than 40 places in the Pittsburgh area where you can buy raw milk, including co-ops, organic food stores, and small dairy farms.
However, food scientists say that people drinking raw milk could expose them, their family, and even their pets to serious illness and possibly even bird flu.
Local farmer talks about raw milk and the increase in interest
Raw milk enthusiasts make up a small but growing part of the dairy market.
"We have a lot of people get milk, get milk once a week, and get two or three gallons once a week for the kids," said Lara Sheilds, the owner of Le-Ara Farms in Armstrong County. "This has been family since 1984."
They have 25 dairy cows including Shayla, Claire, and Bunny, as well as several dozen heifers and steers raised for beef. They sell milk to the dairy processors who pasteurize and homogenize it for sale but a solid portion of their business also comes from direct sales of raw milk to customers.
"We have people that are lactose intolerant but they can drink or milk," Shields said. "People are much more health conscious, getting much more health conscious."
Dr. Suresh Kuchipudi is the professor and chair of infectious disease microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health and pushes back on the perceived benefits of raw milk.
"There are no known benefits of consuming raw milk and there are several significant health risks in doing so," Dr. Kuchipudi. "Salmonella is one of the common pathogens that could be a foodborne pathogen and milk is one of the sources of another bacterial infection called campylobacter."
Pennsylvania has regulations on raw milk, specifically, anyone selling it has to hold a permit from the state.
"Every load that we bottle is tested for antibiotics and quality before we go ahead and bottle it," said Shields. "We're inspected four times per year by the Department of Agriculture, and we're tested twice per year for pathogens like E.coli, listeria, and campylobacter."
What are the potential health risks of consuming raw milk?
In addition to the serious risks of foodborne illnesses, raw milk also may be a carrier of bird flu.
"There is every possibility that if a particular raw milk that is consumed by a human has the virus, they could end up getting infected," Dr. Kuchipudi explained.
"I'm not too concerned, I think there's a lot of overkill and paranoia on this stuff," Sheilds said.
Dr. Kuchipudi and his lab at the Pitt School of Public Health study emerging infectious diseases, particularly the bird flu virus. He said the latest iteration of the bird flu has been spreading from birds to cattle, to humans.
"This particular version of the bird flu virus has done a lot of weird and strange things that we haven't historically experienced," he said.
In November of last year, Pennsylvania mandated bulk testing of dairy farm milk for bird flu. According to the CDC, dairy farmers in 16 states have reported outbreaks with more than 950 herds affected. Ten of those states have reported human cases of bird flu, mainly in dairy workers or other people who come in direct contact with infected animals.
"Whenever a virus like a bird flu virus has the opportunity to transmit among birds, mammals, and also humans, the chances of the virus picking up changes and becoming a public health threat is pretty high," Dr. Kuchipudi said.
It's important to note, that so far no human cases of the bird flu have come from raw milk, though cats have died of bird flu from drinking infected raw milk.
"We in the field, including myself, are really worried about this virus because it poses a real threat of a human epidemic if it's unchecked," Dr. Kuchipudi said.
That's why Dr. Kuchipudi said that pasteurized milk is the way to go, explaining that the process of pasteurization can destroy all forms of disease-causing agents, making it safe to consume milk.
For Lara Shields and her customers, there are no concerns.
"There's been a lot of people raised on raw milk and we all tend to be very healthy," she said.
Once again, it's important to say that no cases of bird flu in humans have been linked directly to consuming raw milk, but in the days since we visited the farm and spoke with the doctor, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a newer strain of H5N1 bird flu has been detected in dairy cows showing that the virus is mutating.

Foodborne illnesses increase during the summer. A doctor explains how to keep safe

As a salmonella outbreak linked to eggs has sickened 79 people across seven states as of June 5, a California-based company has recalled 1.7 million dozen eggs because of potential contamination, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. This rash of illnesses follows a separate outbreak of salmonella infections tied to recalled cucumbers and the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issuing a public health alert for raw ground beef products that could be contaminated with E. coli. As summer approaches, I wanted to understand more about these foodborne infections. What are common causes and symptoms? What are possible consequences of salmonella and E. coli infections? Why are foodborne infections more common in the summer, and what are food safety practices that everyone should follow? To help me with these questions, I spoke with CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen. Wen is an emergency physician and adjunct clinical associate professor at George Washington University. She previously served as health commissioner of Baltimore, where her responsibilities included overseeing food safety. CNN: What are the most common causes of foodborne infections? What symptoms do people experience? Dr. Leana Wen: Foodborne infections are caused by pathogens, including viruses, bacteria and parasites. Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States. The virus is implicated in about half of all food-related illnesses, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The pathogen can spread through contaminated food and drink or from person to person when someone touches objects that have been handled by an infected individual and then touches their mouth, or through sharing cups, bowls and utensils. A number of bacteria can also cause foodborne illness. Infections can occur from eating raw or undercooked food. Other illnesses occur due to bacterial contamination in food. Common bacteria implicated in foodborne illness include campylobacter, listeria, salmonella and E. coli. Symptoms of foodborne infections include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Depending on the cause and on the health of the individual, other symptoms may develop such as fevers, bloody diarrhea and dehydration that worsens underlying health problems. CNN: What are possible consequences of salmonella and E. coli infections? How are they treated? Wen: Salmonella most often spreads to people through contaminated food. While most people who fall ill recover quickly with no long-term consequences, some can become very ill. In the current outbreak involving the California-based egg distributor, 21 people have been hospitalized out of the 79 people sickened, according to the CDC. The key to treatment is hydration. Individuals with diarrhea should keep up fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Those who are vomiting and unable to keep fluids down may need to take anti-nausea medications. Most people will get better without using antibiotics, but they may be needed for individuals at risk of severe illness. E. coli lives in the intestines of humans and many animals. A specific type of E. coli is known to cause a serious infection. This strain, called O157:H7, produces a toxin that can damage the intestinal wall and lead to bloody diarrhea. This is the strain implicated in the recent ground beef recall. The specific danger of O157:H7 is that some people who fall ill from it could develop a complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS. This syndrome can lead to permanent health problems such as kidney failure, and in some cases, it is fatal. Individuals who develop an O157:H7 infection should also drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration from diarrhea. Antibiotics are specifically not given for these infections because they may increase the risk of developing HUS. Most foodborne infections can be treated at home. Reasons to contact your doctor include inability to keep down fluids, persistent diarrhea over three days, high fevers and bloody stools. Babies, older people and individuals with chronic medical conditions should have a lower threshold for seeking help. CNN: Why are foodborne infections more common in the summer? Wen: The risk of foodborne illness is higher during summer months because bacteria grow more quickly in warmer weather. In addition, people are more likely to have barbecues and outdoor events that involve food. Inadequate preparation or leaving out food for too long can lead to foodborne illnesses. CNN: What are food safety practices that everyone should follow? Wen: It's important to abide by recall notices. If you have purchased a product that is now recalled, do not consume it. Follow other instructions as directed by health authorities. Keep an eye on not only federal advisories but your local health department, which will inform you of possible foodborne illnesses associated with local stores and restaurants. Follow best practices in food preparation. That includes washing produce such as vegetables and fruits, even if they end up getting peeled. Make sure to cook meat and fish to the recommended temperature. Be aware of what utensils and plates you are using with raw meat and fish, and don't use them for other food items. Remember that bacteria multiply quickly at room temperature. Two hours is the limit for leaving food out before throwing it away or storing it in a refrigerator or freezer. If you are outdoors and the ambient temperature is very warm, reduce the limit to one hour. It's also a good idea to avoid unpasteurized or 'raw' milk and uncooked eggs. Of course, be sure to wash your hands often and well with soap and water. People who have diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps should not prepare food. Those most vulnerable to severe illness, including older adults, babies, and those who are pregnant or have serious underlying conditions, should be especially careful of foodborne illness as they are of other infections.

Family of woman killed inside UPMC Shadyside parking garage threatening lawsuit against health care giant
The family of a woman who died after she tried to exit the UPMC Shadyside hospital parking garage is threatening legal action if the company doesn't come forward with more information on the incident. It was back in April when Terry Philips was taking her husband to a routine appointment at the hospital. She got mixed up as to where she was supposed to park. What happened was an incident and accident that would eventually take her life, and now her family wants answers as to why it happened, and they're willing to take the health care giant to court to find out. When Phillips tried to get a parking ticket to get out of the UPMC Shadyside garage on April 17, she found herself having to open her door to get the ticket to exit. Her foot was on the brake of her car. It slipped and moved forward, crushing the 79-year-old, slowly killing her. "The husband was right here, he tragically saw the whole thing at one point, he wanted to try to start lifting the car off of his wife," said Matthew Scanlon, the family's attorney. Phillips' family wants to know why it took so long for anyone to help, despite the accident taking place outside the hospital's front door. "You have no medical care rendered for over 30 minutes, that's what's alarming and troubling," Scanlon said. The family's been trying to get answers from the hospital. "(UPMC) don't believe they are responsible for anything," Scanlon said. Scanlon told KDKA-TV that he's asked for documents and video evidence to shed light on what happened. According to Scanlon, he is ready to take UPMC to court soon. "Thirty to 45 days is a reasonable time frame to file and move forward," Scanlon said. KDKA-TV also reached out to UPMC for comment about the pending lawsuit, and is awaiting a response.
