SC denies pre-arrest bail to woman caught writing CTET on sister's behalf
New Delhi: The
Supreme Court
on Wednesday dismissed a woman's anticipatory bail plea after she was booked on charges of impersonation and attempting to write the Central Teacher Eligibility Test Examination pretending to be her sister.
The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is a national level examination conducted twice in a year by the CBSE for appointment of educators in Central government schools like KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan) and the NVS (Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti).
"Her custodial interrogation would be needed in the case," a bench comprising Justices Sandeep Mehta and Prasanna B Varale said while declining the pre-arrest bail plea in the case.
The bench asked her to surrender to police for an effective investigation.
Kumari Sharda, who hails from Bahadurpur village in Darbhanga district, was caught while trying to appear in the CTET in place of her elder sister, the police said. Her biometric and Aadhaar details did not match with that of the real examinee, they added.
The prosecution said Sharda allegedly accepted her guilt at the exam Centre. The trial court in Samastipur and the Patna High Court subsequently on April 23 dismissed her anticipatory bail plea.
She was booked under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for offences, including impersonation and cheating in Samastipur. PTI

3 thieves arrested, six stolen phones recovered
Three thieves were arrested and six stolen mobile phones were recovered along with a dummy pistol and a scooter used in multiple crimes by the Tilak Marg Police in Delhi, an official said on Friday. The accused have been identified as Arbaz (22) of Sarai Kale Khan, Pankaj Mourya (22) of Jungpura, and Rahul Bagh (26) of Chirag Delhi. 'Six stolen mobile phones, one dummy pistol and a scooter used in the crime were recovered from the accused,' said Delhi Police in a statement. The official said that the arrested accused had been selling stolen mobile phones on e-commerce platforms using fake Aadhaar cards and forged invoices. The breakthrough in the case came after a complaint was filed by a Blinkit delivery boy, who reported the theft of his mobile phone, stating that it was stolen while he was delivering an order on Pandara Road. The accused had tricked him by pretending to make an online payment before fleeing with his mobile phone. An E-FIR (No. 80056549/2025) was registered under Section 303(2) BNS at PS Tilak Marg on June 13, 2025. A special team led by SI Kamlesh Kumar, along with HC Sanjeet Kumar, Ct. Jhabbar Mal and Ct. Ram Tyagi worked under the supervision of SHO Gurmail Singh and ACP Nageen Kaushik to crack the case. CCTV footage from the area showed the culprits fleeing on a scooter. Order details from Blinkit and further analysis of internet logs helped police trace one suspect to Sarai Kale Khan. However, he vacated the premises a month ago. Using technical surveillance and informants, police eventually tracked the trio to a rented house in Chhatarpur. So far, three E-FIRs from Tilak Marg, Kalkaji, and Vasant Kunj South, and one lost report from Sunlight Colony, have been worked out with these arrests.

SUV collides with truck, 2 brothers among 9 killed
PURULIA: Nine people, including two brothers, returning from a wedding died when the SUV carrying them collided head-on with a truck on Dhanbad-Jamshedpur stretch of NH-18 in West Bengal's Purulia early Friday. Balrampur police took the passengers to Banshgar rural health centre, where all nine were declared dead. An Aadhaar card found on one of the deceased led cops to contact their relatives. The bodies were sent for autopsy. Police said probe was underway and witness statements were being recorded. They seized the truck. Its driver and helper, however, are on the run.

Bidhannagar cops make body cams, CCTV must for passport verification
Kolkata: Aimed at enhancing transparency and security in the passport verification process, Bidhannagar City Police has made it mandatory for all passport verifications to be conducted under camera surveillance — either through body cams during home visits or CCTV systems in police stations — from this month. The move comes at a time when Kolkata Police is investigating a fake passport racket and have arrested a retired sub-inspector for allegedly clearing applications without proper enquiry and adequate verification. Officers said the move will also help them reduce complaints from residents about officers, civic volunteers and middlemen demanding money or harassing applicants in the name of additional documentation. "Now, all passport verifications are being conducted under body camera surveillance. In the case of home verification, only representatives from the Special Branch are visiting the houses of applicants, and the entire process is being recorded. The footage is being stored until the passport is issued. The officer added that since May, during passport verification at home, police station, or office, an OTP-based Aadhaar verification system has been introduced through an internal app. "This has made the process more accurate and transparent.
