Bidhannagar cops make body cams, CCTV must for passport verification

Time of India21-06-2025
Kolkata: Aimed at enhancing transparency and security in the passport verification process, Bidhannagar City Police has made it mandatory for all passport verifications to be conducted under camera surveillance — either through body cams during home visits or CCTV systems in police stations — from this month.
The move comes at a time when Kolkata Police is investigating a fake passport racket and have arrested a retired sub-inspector for allegedly clearing applications without proper enquiry and adequate verification. Officers said the move will also help them reduce complaints from residents about officers, civic volunteers and middlemen demanding money or harassing applicants in the name of additional documentation.
"Now, all passport verifications are being conducted under body camera surveillance. In the case of home verification, only representatives from the Special Branch are visiting the houses of applicants, and the entire process is being recorded. The footage is being stored until the passport is issued. At police stations, the passport verification process is being conducted strictly under CCTV monitoring with audio recording," said Tauseef Ali Azhar, ADCP SB of Bidhannagar City Police.

"Whenever we receive specific complaints, we take strict action with zero tolerance. In several instances, we initiated departmental enquiries and took disciplinary action against the officers concerned."
The officer added that since May, during passport verification at home, police station, or office, an OTP-based Aadhaar verification system has been introduced through an internal app. "This has made the process more accurate and transparent.
The passport verification now undergoes four-five layers of scrutiny — from the verifying officer to the local IC to the police commissioner — ensuring greater accountability," he said.
The initiative gains significance in light of a racket that allegedly used forged identity documents to secure genuine Indian passports. The case came to light last Sept when the Kolkata Regional Passport Office flagged nearly 240 suspicious passports issued on the basis of faulty documents. A special probe team of Kolkata Police was formed to investigate the scam, and a charge sheet was submitted in March. Investigators found that police allegedly failed to detect forged documents during verification.
On Tuesday, ED carried out raids at multiple locations across Kolkata and its surrounding districts as part of the wider investigation.

Factory owner taps into pipeline, pilfers gas worth 43.8L over 3 years

Surat: Udhna police have booked the owner of a factory for illegally tapping into a Gujarat Gas pipeline, laying a connection to his factory and pilfering 59,054 units of gas, worth Rs 43.8 lakh. Gujarat Gas Ltd enforcement officials raided the unit along with Udhna police and found that the businessman, Vishal Patel, had been stealing gas for three years. Udhna police booked him for theft under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and under the Prevention of Damage to Public Properties Act. According to the FIR filed by Gujarat Gas Ltd (GGL) deputy manager Prashant Vyas, his company distributes gas in Surat and other parts of the country. It supplies gas for domestic, commercial and industrial use. Vishal Patel had a commercial gas supply agreement with GGL in 2007, for supply to his industrial unit in Bhathena. As Patel was found to be stealing gas, his connection severed on Oct 14, 2022. On Aug 5, 2025, GGL officials received information that Patel was using gas after illegally puncturing the GGL pipeline. When officials tried to verify this, they found that Patel may have concealed the line underground. They found an illegal underground pipeline going to Patel's unit. GGL officials then, in the presence of Udhna police, checked Patel's factory premises and found him to be using gas illegally. The illegal connection had been made by cutting into the main pipeline, putting people's lives in danger. They way it had been made indicated that people with technical expertise were also involved. Officials found that Patel had been pilfering gas since 2022, with the value of gas stolen being Rs 43.8 lakh. An FIR was filed by Udhna police against Vishal Patel and the others involved in cutting into the gas supply line. Udhna police inspector S N Desai told TOI: "We have detained Patel in connection with the case. Our preliminary investigation revealed the involvement of the person responsible for gas meter readings. He had offered Patel an illegal connection in exchange for money. Patel agreed, after which two individuals punctured the line to provide him with the illegal supply." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). ED records Raina's statement in illegal betting probe

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday recorded the statement of cricketer Suresh Raina in connection with its larger money laundering probe against several illegal online betting platforms, which use multiple platforms for surrogate advertisements and collect funds from their users, officials said. Former cricketer Suresh Raina. (PTI) The former India player reached the ED headquarters at around 11 am and was examined till evening. Raina's statement was recorded under the prevention of money laundering act (PMLA) for endorsing a sports betting app, which indulged in illegal practices. An officer, without naming the player, said 'another former Indian cricketer has also been asked to appear before the agency.' ED is calling several celebrities to understand their links with the betting apps, any endorsement fee earned and the mode of communication between them. Earlier, the agency had called the representatives of Google and Meta for questioning as part of this probe. The financial crimes probe agency is probing multiple illegal online betting platforms and has questioned tech firms, media houses' representatives who have received money in the form of advertisements from them. Several platforms hosting illegal betting and gambling links, including instances of advertisements placed for them on various social media outlets and app stores, are under the ED scanner. In 2023, the Union ministry of information and broadcasting issued four advisories to newspapers, broadcast news channels, entertainment channels, publishers of online news and current affairs content, online advertisement intermediaries (like Google and Facebook), and social media platforms to not advertise online betting platforms. Despite these instructions from the Centre, eminent personalities in the field of entertainment and sports endorsed them. These actors and sportspersons are also under the ED's scanner and they could be summoned soon, according to an ED officer. According to the information gathered by ED over the past several months, multiple betting platforms, which have been banned over the years, still run their operations by changing names and are promoted by celebrities and social media influencers. 'These platforms are in violation of multiple laws and directions by the Indian government, including tax evasion, money laundering, and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) as money is transferred out of the country illegally. It is estimated that around 220 million Indian users are currently engaged on various betting apps, and 110 million of these are regular users,' said the officer. In just the first three months of 2025, more than 1.6 billion visits were recorded on illegal betting websites or apps and it is suspected that the online betting market in India might be worth around $100 million, the first ED officer said. 'The estimates also suggest that top betting apps are evading ₹27,000 crore in taxes every year,' the officer said. The government has issued 1,524 blocking orders against illegal gambling websites and mobile apps between 2022 and June 2025, as revealed in a response from the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) in the ongoing monsoon session.
