Alcaraz cruises in French Open opener

Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz said he was 'on a good path' following a 'roller-coaster' start to the season after kicking off his French Open campaign with a commanding victory over Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri yesterday.
The Spaniard struck 31 winners in a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over world number 310 Zeppieri and will face Hungary's Fabian Marozsan in round two.
Alcaraz is the title favourite at Roland Garros after winning both the Monte Carlo Masters and Italian Open trophies this year on clay.
He has suffered some surprise defeats in 2024 as well, though, including to Holger Rune in the Barcelona Open final, Jack Draper in the Indian Wells semi-finals and against David Goffin in his opening match in Miami.
'So far it's been a roller-coaster, let's say,' Alcaraz said. 'But right now I think I found a really good path a g a i n , and I'm trying to have a really good level during the whole tournament or even during the whole match.' So I think I'm just starting to get it, feeling more comfortable approaching the matches. Once I start the matches, I think I'm just keeping the high level in the whole match and during the whole tournament.'
The four time Grand Slam champion saved all three of the break points he faced against Zeppieri on Court Suzanne Lenglen as he cruised through in second gear.
Alcaraz is now on an eightmatch winning streak at the French Open and also took Olympic silver at Roland Garros last year, losing the final to Novak Djokovic.
The 22-year-old was in attendance on Sunday as Court Philippe Chatrier waved an emotional goodbye to the retired Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz has long been expected to take on the mantle of his illustrious compatriot, but says he finds it hard to fathom how Nadal won a record 14 French Open titles.
'It's something you can't think about... Just one man in the planet was able to do it, and I can't imagine,' said the second seed.
'It was emotional yesterday, seeing him saying goodbye in the way he did yesterday was unbelievable.' Alcaraz beat world number 56 Marozsan at Indian Wells last year but lost their only previous meeting on clay at the 2023 Italian Open. 'I study my opponents a little bit. I know that Fabian likes to hit drop shots. So probably I'll put extra focus on that. I'm going to be ready for that... It's gonna be a dropshot battle, I guess.'

'There's been a lot of skill that has contributed to us winning this Test match but our attitude as well,' said Stokes. 'Every session we turned up with the attitude that we could blow this match apart. This was England's second-highest fourth-innings runchase, just behind the 378-3 they managed also against India at Edgbaston not long after Stokes and McCullum joined forces as captain and coach. 'I think we're just a very simple-minded pair, me and Baz (McCullum), when it comes to cricket,' Stokes said. 'Everyone knows what cricket is about, it's about scoring more runs than the opposition. When you strip it all back, that's it... When you're chasing totals like that, how you are in the dressing room is very important.' 'Nightmare for the opposition' Duckett had one moment of good fortune when he was dropped on 97 on Tuesday but the 30-year-old Nottinghamshire opener was otherwise in commanding form. Together with Zak Crawley (65), he laid the foundation for victory against an India attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah, the world's number one-ranked Test bowler, with an outstanding first-wicket partnership of 188. 'Ducky has been incredible since coming into the team,' Stokes said. 'He's shown he can score runs pretty much all over the world in any conditions he's faced with.' He added: 'Ducky got the 149 but Zak was so, so important, too. They complement each other so well. I'm sure you could ask the opposition bowlers about why they're a nightmare when they are in for a long period.' Stokes's decision to field first after winning the toss in seemingly ideal batting conditions was criticised by former England captain Michael Vaughan. But all-rounder Stokes added: 'It's a good job Test cricket is played over five days. You make a decision and you don't know what is going to happen.' India coach Gautam Gambhir said the tourists would still stand by their plan to play Bumrah -- who, remarkably, went wicketless in the second innings at Headingley -- in just three of the five Tests to preserve his fitness following a back injury. 'We won't change the plans,' Gambhir said after India's attack rarely threatened on the final day in Leeds. 'To manage his workload is more important. Before he came on this tour, it was already decided he would play three Tests but let's see how his body turns out.' There is now a break of more than a week until the second Test in Birmingham starts on July 2, with former India batsman Gambhir adding: 'We haven't decided which two other Test matches he's going to play. 'We absolutely have the bowling attack to take 20 wickets. We pick the squad on trust, not on hope.'

Pogba says he is talking to a club about comeback after ban

The 32-year-old also said he had re-established contact with his brother Mathias, sentenced to a year in prison last December for his involvement in a plot to extort 13 million euros ($15 million) from the 2018 World Cup winner. Pogba, who played for Manchester United and Juventus, is hoping to put three chaotic years behind him. Pogba suffered through repeated injuries and patchy form that led to his departure from United in 2022. He returned for a second stint at Juventus, where his problems continued. Alcaraz Sets Up Queen's Final Clash with Lehecka
Carlos Alcaraz reached the Queen's Club final for the second straight year after beating Jack Draper 6-3, 6-4. The defending Wimbledon champion finished this quick 82-minute contest to remain unbeaten on grass since last year. He will face Czech star Jiri Lehecka in the Grand Slam warm-up final, his 10th singles final on grass. Top seed Alcaraz survived a tense second set but was brilliant with his footwork and energy in the first. Jack Draper's shots hit the net as Alcaraz ran ahead 6-3. Alcaraz served well, hitting the first set's hardest forehand, and forced the Brit into defensive returns. In the second set, Alcaraz remained consistent in the break points and drew Draper out of position. Draper returned one wide for a final match loss. Lehecka earlier beat Sebastian Korda 6-2, 6-2.
