Apple's WWDC25 project codenames signal that glass is in and flat design is out

WWDC 2025 will be upon us tomorrow, and there's lots to look forward to. One of the most talked about reveals that one could expect is Apple's preview of a major visual overhaul across its operating systems—and with it, reveal two names that signal where the company's design philosophy is headed: Liquid Glass and Glasswing. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Liquid Glass is the name of Apple's new user interface style debuting with iOS 26 and rolling out across iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and CarPlay later this year. The redesign brings a sleeker, more cohesive look with transparency, shimmer, and glass-like depth layered into toolbars and in-app controls. The goal is to create a unified visual identity across Apple's platforms while pushing the operating system design forward after more than a decade of flat visuals.The second name, Glasswing , is what Apple is internally calling the iPhone it's developing for 2027. That model is expected to commemorate the iPhone's 20th anniversary with a radical new design featuring curved glass edges on all sides, ultra-thin bezels, and no cutout on the front display. The name references the glasswing butterfly, known for its nearly transparent wings, an image that aligns with Apple's long-term push toward visually seamless, glass-centric hardware.

Just as the flat design era coincided with the rise of larger iPhones and the Apple Watch, the Liquid Glass interface appears to be laying the groundwork for a new generation of Apple hardware that reflects its aesthetic.
Alan Dye, Apple's vice president of human interface design, is expected to formally introduce Liquid Glass during WWDC. While exact UI details remain officially under wraps (though extensively leaked), the branding itself offers a glimpse into how Apple sees the next stage of its platform identity.
These updates will come at a time when Apple is facing increasing pressure to innovate on other fronts, especially in artificial intelligence. While WWDC won't solve the AI gap, I believe Apple is betting that a more refined and integrated design language will keep users invested and prepare its users for what comes next. WWDC kicks off tomorrow, June 9th, where both Liquid Glass and Glasswing will take center-stage.

WWDC 2025 is just around the corner, taking place tomorrow (June 9), and the rumors so far suggest it's going to be an exciting event. The event where Apple unveils its latest software developments will also see some hardware products. Here's a rumor roundup to give you up to speed with what you can expect. Software updates A last minute report revealed Apple will likely change the naming scheme of its operating systems. So instead of iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, the company is launching iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 to better align them with the current year. Since the next-generation iOS and iPadOS usually arrive towards the end the year, we are looking at 26 rather than 25. Potential iOS 26 design Aside from the name change, iOS is expected to come with a total redesign, perhaps the biggest change since iOS 7. The new look is inspired by Apple Vision Pro's interface with round app icons, translucent menus, glassy floating buttons, pill-shaped bottom navigation bars, and more consistent cross-platform design. Expect pop-out menus for more options, updated widgets on Lock and Home Screens with new look. Some under-the-hood changes are also expected. For instance, AI will be leveraged to improve the battery management. The Shortcuts app will be powered by AI too. Meanwhile, the iPad is tipped to receive new multitasking features to make it more Mac-like. And the Apple Pencil is getting a standalone calligraphy pen mode. The upcoming macOS, likely named Tahoe, will get an updated look to match the iOS 26 design language. It will also bring a new gaming app and better AirPods feature integration. The watchOS and tvOS will get a fresh new look to align with the new design language, and just like macOS, they will probably get AirPods live translation integration, and Apple TV will come with the new gaming app. As for visionOS, it's rumored to get a new eye-scrolling feature for documents and Magic Wand support for third-party controllers. Apple will expand AI-based translation across all Apple products and add live translation for phone calls and text messages. AI enhancements and deeper integration into system apps and features are also expected. Hardware updates On the hardware front, Apple is expected to showcase a redesigned Mac Pro, which will be the first redesign since the company started using its own chips. Finally, the cheese grater design is going away! HomePod is getting a display, making it easier to control HomeKit devices. It will also feature Siri, deep integration with Apple TV and support a number of AI-powered features for home automation. AirTags are also getting an update, but the exact improvements in the hardware are still a mystery. Although it's highly unlikely that we see new AirPods, Apple is rumored to introduce new features like a head gesture to control calls and messages, auto-pause music when falling asleep, camera control trigger, "studio-quality" microphone mode and improved pairing experience for shared AirPods. The phone will very likely come with yet another 5,000 mAh battery. And, if Samsung does increase the battery capacity, it will most definitely stay under 5,400 mAh. Because of the sanctions placed against the company by the U.S., Huawei has to be content with having its AI accelerators dominate in China rather than compete in America. The U.S. government might have handed this business to Huawei on a silver platter since it would prefer that global leader Nvidia, whose GPUs are used as AI accelerators, not sell its new H20 chips in China. But Nvidia has come up with a way to take on Huawei in China. This month, Nvidia will start production of the B40 AI accelerator. The B40 is made specifically for the Chinese market. Using Nvidia's latest Blackwell architecture, it is designed to perform at a level that will allow the component to be exported to China under U.S. export rules. With AI sizzling hot, high-profile customers in China have created a new rule for AI chip vendors that says, "Sell only what you already have in stock; if you fail to deliver, you're in trouble." Huawei was planning on having its new AI accelerator, the Ascend 910C, built this month. However, a tweet from leaker @Jukanlosreve says that mass production of the chip has been pushed back to the end of the year due to technical reasons. Huawei has had supply chain problems and the tweet notes that Huawei's domestic rivals have no inventory available to sell or they are still in the middle of developing a competing chip. When production does start at the end of this year, SMIC will build the Ascend 910C for Huawei on its second-generation 7nm process node known as N+2. TSMC, without having to deal with U.S. sanctions like SMIC does, builds Nvidia's H20 GPU chip using its 4nm 4N process node. As a result, the Ascend 910C could be slower and less energy efficient than Nvidia's H20. The ability to use parallel processing explains why GPUs, like Nvidia's GPU chips, are used as AI accelerators rather than CPUs. The latter handles its workloads sequentially which makes it less qualified for AI use.
