‘They don't respect us': Kangana Ranaut opens up about MPs' ‘struggles', claims panchayats and MLAs have bigger budgets

Indian Express13-07-2025
Be it for the right or wrong reasons, it's doubtful whether contemporary Bollywood has anyone who can make headlines quite like Kangana Ranaut. Even her Instagram stories often grab significant attention, let alone her interviews. After her much-delayed visit to her flood-hit parliamentary constituency of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh drew widespread criticism, Kangana's unfiltered admission that she isn't enjoying her first stint as an MP raised further eyebrows. She even described politics as a 'very expensive hobby'.
What drew the most criticism, however, was a comment she made during her visit to Mandi, where she stated that she does not have any official Cabinet to provide disaster relief. Recently, the actor-turned-politician went a step further, claiming that even panchayats and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) have larger budgets than Members of Parliament (MPs). She also alleged that nobody respects parliamentarians.
'A lot of MPs end up feeling very frustrated, and we talk to each other (about such matters). It's not like others have some privileges; you just struggle with a lot. You (the MPs) are the connecting link between the state and the Centre. So, you are basically nowhere. We are like twilight,' she claimed during a chat with Times Now, emphasising that parliamentarians are often left 'floundering' in the middle.
'When you go to your state, you don't have a single place where you're grounded or connected, or where you're running a project. And when you go to the Centre, you're always waiting in queues outside ministers' offices. A lot of MPs also complain that even a panchayat or an MLA has a lot more budget than an MP. They don't respect us,' she alleged.
Highlighting the establishment of District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committees (DISHAs) as a welcome development, she added, 'The job (of an MP) demands a lot of communication. DISHA is a huge step. If we did not have the privilege or power to ask the deputy commissioner or those who clearly work under the state government, it (the position of a parliamentarian) would be a redundant place to be in. It (DISHA) was, I think, created because of this frustration: 'What's our place and work? What are we supposed to do and where?' Also, MLAs are very territorial, and ministers are preoccupied with a lot of businesses. Meanwhile, you (MPs) are in the middle, floundering.'

Kangana Ranaut hails government's OTT ban to protect culture and youth

Actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has voiced strong support for the Centre's recent crackdown on OTT platforms accused of streaming sexually explicit content. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has directed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block public access to 25 such platforms, including Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix, and others like Big Shots App, Boomex, Kangan App, and Mojflix. Kangana, known for her outspoken views, lauded the move as necessary to safeguard Indian cultural values and the well-being of future generations. 'In order to preserve the overall culture of our country and the future path of our youngsters, and so that our society does not collapse completely, this step was much awaited and is now much appreciated,' she said. 'The action taken against these apps, especially the illegal ones, is highly appreciated.' The blocked platforms were reportedly in violation of multiple Indian laws, including Section 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000; Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023; and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. The government has also requested the Department of Telecommunications to ensure swift compliance by the ISPs in disabling these platforms. This decision follows a petition filed in the Supreme Court earlier this year seeking a ban on sexually explicit content on OTT and social media platforms. While the Supreme Court stated that it was not within its domain to act, it emphasized the need for executive intervention—prompting the present move. Ranaut's endorsement adds weight to the cultural debate surrounding digital content regulation in India.

'The ban has been imposed to ensure that our culture and the minds of the youth are not corrupted. It is important to see that our society is not headed toward a complete downfall. It was awaited for a long time,' she said. Kangana also appreciated the step taken against the illegal functioning of the OTT applications. Likewise, actor Ravi Kishan has also welcomed the decision, stating that 'boundaries and limits need to be set.' According to sources, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered the blocking of 25 over-the-top (OTT) platforms over allegedly publishing obscene, vulgar, and even pornographic material. As a part of it, platforms like Ullu, ALTT, Big Shots App, NeonX VIP, and Desiflix were found disseminating content that directly violated several provisions of Indian law, including Section 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. A total of 14 mobile applications, 26 websites have been ordered to be disabled by intermediaries under provisions of the IT Act, 2000 and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Much of the content showcased on the aforementioned platforms involved graphic sexual innuendos, long sequences of nudity, and pornographic visuals.
