Yoane Wissa: Brentford reject Newcastle's new £40m bid for forward
Newcastle United have suffered further frustration in the transfer market after their latest bid for Brentford's Yoane Wissa was rejected. An offer worth £35million, plus £5million in add-ons, has been turned down by the London club. Wissa had previously been the subject of a bid up to £30million. The development is likely to infuriate the 28-year-old forward, who is believed to have held talks with the Brentford owner, Matthew Benham, earlier this week in an attempt to secure an exit. Wissa had already removed links to Brentford from his Instagram account and flew home early from their pre-season camp in Portugal as he tried to force through a move to St James' Park. The head coach is keen to strengthen his midfield as the club prepare for European football for the first time in 30 years. Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were presented to the crowd before Sunday's 3-1 win over Brentford, having been signed from Ipswich Town and Manchester City respectively, while Forest also completed a deal for the French striker, Arnaud Kalimuendo, from Rennes on Monday. The deal for Douglas Luiz is understood to include an obligation to buy based on the number of appearances he makes. The 27-year-old had a difficult debut season at Juventus and was even tipped to leave the club in the January window after only six months in Serie A. Villa reluctantly sold him last summer for €50million (about £43million) to ensure they did not breach the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules. But he only started in three matches in the league for his new side and six times in all competitions from his 27 appearances. The defensive midfielder made 204 appearances in five years at Villa and was key to them qualifying for the Champions League under Unai Emery with a fourth-placed finish in 2023-24. Forest had also been keen on Rico Lewis but the full back now looks set to sign a new contract at Manchester City. Forest were hopeful of agreeing a double deal for Lewis and McAtee. But while the latter was at the City Ground on Sunday, Lewis was impressing for Pep Guardiola's side against Wolverhampton Wanderers the previous day. The 20-year-old England international was left out of the FA Cup final squad in May which had raised question marks over his long-term future but the academy graduate has been committed to the club and is set to sign a new long-term deal. While it has yet to be fully agreed there is hope of a resolution soon after talks accelerated earlier this week. Speaking after the 3-0 win against Wolves, Lewis said: 'For me, I've never ever seen myself at a different club. I've always wanted to play for City. It's my dream club, and like you see today, when I'm playing with the kind of players that I'm playing with, it brings out the best in me, so I'm so happy.' Chelsea have agreed to sell the defender Renato Veiga to Villarreal for a fee worth an initial £21.3million plus £4.3million in add-ons. Veiga is travelling to Spain and will undergo a medical on Thursday. The 22-year-old was signed by Chelsea only last summer from Basel for £12million but left the club in January after asking to leave to get more time playing in his preferred centre-back position. Up until that point he had been used at left back and as cover in midfield at Stamford Bridge. Veiga's ambition is to play in central defence for Portugal at the World Cup in 2026. He joined Juventus on loan in January, at a cost of £4.3million, but the Italian club opted against making his move permanent after a change in senior recruitment staff. Meanwhile, Rodrigo Muniz is expected to stay at Fulham after they rejected multiple bids from Atalanta. The west London club will begin talks about extending the forward's contract beyond its expiry next summer.
