Four Republican states send National Guard troops as reinforcements in DC
"I've approved the deployment of approximately 200 Mississippi National Guard soldiers to Washington, DC, to support President Trump's effort to return law and order to our nation's capital," Governor Tate Reeves said in a statement.
The announcement followed others over the weekend from the governors of Ohio, West Virginia and South Carolina who said they would send troops from their states. Ohio will provide 150 and South Carolina around 200, while West Virginia will send approximately 350, some of whom have already begun to arrive, according to a statement from the joint task force responsible for the mission.
They will join 800 troops from the DC National Guard who have already been mobilized for the mission. It was not immediately clear why forces from other states were being sent instead of additional personnel from Washington.
The overwhelmingly Democratic US capital faces allegations from Republican politicians that it is overrun by crime, plagued by homelessness and financially mismanaged. However, data from Washington police shows significant drops in violent crime between 2023 and 2024, although that was coming off the back of a post-pandemic surge.
The deployment of troops in Washington comes after Trump dispatched the National Guard and Marines to quell unrest in Los Angeles, California, that was spurred by immigration enforcement raids. That deployment marked the first time since 1965 that a US president deployed the National Guard against the wishes of a state governor.

So it's a move in the right direction, but it's still not very detailed." An agreement has yet to be reached on what security guarantees the United States and the EU are prepared to provide to Ukraine. Article 5 The best would be one that comes closest to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, according to the director of the Egmont Institute. "A security guarantee means promising to go to war if your security is threatened. Anything less than that is support, but it is not a security guarantee. The best way to make this credible is to deploy troops to Ukraine after a ceasefire or peace agreement," says the researcher. Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Western allies would formalise security guarantees for Ukraine within the next ten days.

Trump course back on PGA schedule for 2026 season: tour
Doral's "Blue Monster" was a regular stop on the PGA circuit for more than half a century, hosting a tournament annually from 1962 to 2016, when it staged the WGC-Cadillac Championship. However the tournament was moved from Doral after sponsor Cadillac decided not to renew its sponsorship and a replacement sponsor could not be found. The PGA Tour, which had been sharply critical of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign rhetoric concerning immigrants, subsequently moved the event to Mexico -- prompting a furious reaction from Trump at the time. Doral has since hosted a stop on the Saudi Arabia-financed LIV Golf circuit. As of next season, however, the course will stage The Miami Championship, which will become one of the PGA Tour's nine signature events -- the elite tournaments that feature the world's best players and offer purses of $20 million. "We're excited to showcase the game's greatest players competing at golf's most iconic venues," PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp said in a statement to announce the 2026 schedule. "Inspired by our players and fans, we're accelerating the Tour's evolution and ushering in a new era of innovation on and off the course." The PGA Tour has had an uneasy relationship with avid golfer Trump over the past decade. The tour issued a statement in 2015 which said Trump's remarks about Mexican immigrants were "inconsistent with our strong commitment to an inclusive and welcoming environment in the game of golf". When the PGA Tour subsequently moved its WGC event to Mexico for commercial reasons following the failure to find a sponsor, Trump reacted angrily, describing it as a "sad day for Miami, the United States and the game of golf". "They're moving it to Mexico City," Trump said at the time. "I hope they have kidnapping insurance." Trump's relationship with the PGA Tour has improved in recent years however, with the US leader involved in peace talks between the tour and LIV Golf over a possible deal to unify the two rival circuits.

Trump says US air support could be part of Ukraine security guarantees
President Donald Trump said Tuesday, August 19 that US air support and European ground troops could be part of security guarantees for Ukraine, warning of a "rough" situation if talks between Moscow and Kyiv fail. "When it comes to security, they're willing to put people on the ground," he told Fox News, referring to European allies whom he met in the White House on Monday. "We're willing to help them with things, especially, probably, if you talk about by air, because no one has the kind of stuff we have, really, they don't," Trump said. He added his "assurance" that no US ground troops would deploy to Ukraine, and he categorically ruled out Ukraine joining the Western military alliance NATO. Post-war security is a key concern for Kyiv after more than three years of Russian invasion. Moscow has long said it will not tolerate Ukraine joining NATO and has been hostile to the idea of Western troops deploying to the former Soviet territory. Trump said that "France and Germany, a couple of them, UK – they want to have boots on the ground." "I don't think it's going to be a problem, to be honest with you. I think, I think Putin is tired of" the war, he added. Talks with Putin and Zelensky Trump said that following his talks Monday with European leaders he is pushing to organize a bilateral summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky – followed by another where he will join. "I called President Putin, and we're trying to work out a meeting with President Zelensky. We'll see what happens there," he said. "If that works out, if it works out, then I'll go to the trilat and close it up." Saying it was possible Putin would back out, Trump said, "I hope President Putin's going to be good and if not, it's going to be a rough situation." Zelensky "has to show some flexibility also," he added. In addition to the question of guaranteeing Ukraine's future security, the other key sticking point in ending the war is the status of the huge swaths of land occupied by Russia. Trump said Ukraine has to accept it will not get its lost territories back – including the eastern Donbas region – but in return will get peace. "I assume you've all seen the map. You know, a big chunk of territory is taken and that territory has been taken. Now they're talking about Donbas, but Donbas right now, as you know, is 79% owned and controlled by Russia," Trump said. The US leader said Ukraine was not powerful enough to change the situation. "This was a war and Russia is a powerful military nation, you know. Whether people like it or not, it's a powerful nation. It's a much bigger nation," he said. "You don't take, you don't take on a nation that's 10 times your size." "Everybody can play cute and this and that, but, you know, Ukraine is going to get their life back," Trump said about a peace deal involving Ukraine surrendering land. "They're going to stop having people killed all over the place and they're going to get a lot of land."
