Yankees React to Aaron Judge's Historic Moment in Yankees Game

Yankees React to Aaron Judge's Historic Moment in Yankees Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees began a three-game weekend series at Dodger Stadium, and it has been billed as a rematch of last fall's World Series. Advertisement The Dodgers bludgeoned the Yankees last year to win the world championship, and while the series was initially expected to be a classic and be very competitive, Los Angeles prevailed in just five games. Friday's game was a historic one, as reigning league MVPs Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge each hit home runs in the first inning. It was the first time in Major League Baseball history that the reigning MVPs from both leagues homered in the first inning of the same game. Judge struck first in the top of that inning with a dinger into center field that opened up the scoring. Judge won his second American League MVP in three years last season with 144 RBIs and 58 home runs, both of which led all of MLB. Advertisement Ohtani, meanwhile, had a National League-high 130 RBIs and 54 homers, and he became the first player in MLB history to have at least 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in the same season. He came into Friday with 20 home runs this season, which was more than anyone else in the majors. New York came into this game in first place in the AL East with a sizable cushion over the second-place Tampa Bay Rays. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are also in first place in their division, but they're trying to hold off the San Diego Padres, who are just 1.5 games behind in second place. MLB Posts Strong Griffin Canning Statement Amid Dodgers Series

MLB Posts Strong Griffin Canning Statement Amid Dodgers Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets have been hot of late. They have won nine of their last 11 games, and on Wednesday, they looked to take a 2-1 lead in their current four-game road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Advertisement This series is a rematch of last October's National League Championship Series, which L.A. won in six games. The Mets held on to win the first game of this series by a final score of 4-3 on Monday before some late-game heroics by Max Muncy and Freddie Freeman sunk them in extra innings on Tuesday. In Wednesday's game, New York pitcher Griffin Canning shut out the Dodgers in six innings of work, allowing the team to win, 6-1. It was his seventh start this year in which he has allowed no more than one run. Since entering Major League Baseball in 2019 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels, Canning hasn't made the All-Star team, and his lowest ERA in a full season was 3.99, which he achieved in 2020. But that year, he won the Gold Glove award. Advertisement He signed as a free agent with the Mets in December. He could be en route to a career year, as he had an ERA of 3.23 and a 5-2 record coming into Wednesday. Jonathan Hui-USA TODAY SportsJonathan Hui-USA TODAY Sports New York now has the best overall record in the National League at 39-23 and is 1.5 games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies, who are in second place in the NL East. Only the Detroit Tigers have a better record in all of Major League Baseball. New York and L.A. will battle in the final game of their series on Thursday. Afterward, New York will head east for a three-game road series versus the Colorado Rockies. Paul Skenes' Reaction After Leaving Astros Game Turns Heads

Paul Skenes' Reaction After Leaving Astros Game Turns Heads originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Pirates wasted another masterful Paul Skenes outing on Tuesday. Making his 13th start of the season, Skenes pitched eight innings of one-run baseball. The 23-year-old right-hander surrendered just three hits while striking out eight and walking one. Advertisement Suffering the loss, Skenes received zero run support from his offense. This was the second time this season he suffered a loss while going eight innings and surrendering just one run. While he is firmly in the National League Cy Young race with a 2.05 ERA, Skenes is just 4-6 on the season due to Pittsburgh's offense that ranks 29th in runs scored. Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes (30).Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images As he departed from the game after his eighth inning of work, Skenes walked off the field to an ovation from Pirates fans. Pittsburgh trailed 1-0 at this time, which drew a wry smile from Skenes as he was in line for another loss. "Paul Skenes with a wry smile as he saunters off the mound," Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan wrote on X. "To a standing ovation. LOSING. 8 innings. 9 Ks. 1 run. THIS OFFENSE STINKS." Skenes' reaction has caught the attention of fans on social media, with many feeling bad for the superstar right-hander. Advertisement "That's a future yankee," said one. "It'll be another 20 years if they don't trade him. There's nothing besides that man on this team." "He knows every time he takes the mound it's a complete game shutout or bust!" one exclaimed. "If I am Skenes I demand a trade tomorrow," said another. "He has to hate Pittsburgh," one claimed. "And I don't blame him. "Feel sorry for him," said another.
