‘Our Melbourne Cup': Local trainer savours special victory at Scone
Fiorsum Fred earlier gave Singleton a hat-trick of wins on Scone's biggest day of the year when he claimed the class 3 Highway Handicap (1600m).
Singleton won benchmark handicaps on the standalone program the past two years with Dollar Magic and Comonic, and Fiorsum Fred added to the record with a strong finish for a three-quarter length victory.
Former Gold Coast apprentice Jace McMurray rode Fiorsum Fred, giving him a first Sydney metro win. He has joined Randwick trainer Michael Freedman on loan.
Filly shows star potential
Zoustar filly Stardom is set to chase more black type at the Queensland winter carnival after securing a valuable win in the Woodlands Stakes (1100m) as part of a listed double for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable.
The Torryburn Stud talent, out of Snitzel mare Diddums, raced outside leader Rainbow Glow before taking over at the top of straight for jockey Adam Hyeronimus and finding late to hold off Kris Lees-trained Wollzeile by a half length. Favourite Akaysha was strong late for third after getting too far back.
The Instructor later gave Hyeronimus and the Waterhouse-Bott yard another big win, overhauling Whinchat in the final metres of the Luskin Star Stakes. The son of Russian Revolution is also set to hunt stakes wins in Queensland.
Caballus comeback soured
Throat and gelding operations proved pivotal for Caballus when he returned with victory in the listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m), only to suffer a bleeding attack.
The Bjorn Baker-trained four-year-old, last year's Eskimo Prince Stakes winner, got the sit behind leader The Novelist from gate one. Jockey Ash Morgan then took the $5.50 favourite up the inside in the last furlong for a two-thirds of a length victory.
Caballus, which raced at group 1 level before his breathing problems prompted the throat operation, was set to chase bigger targets in Queensland before he was found to have bled from both nostrils post-race, triggering a mandatory suspension.
Godolphin's Renosu also bled in the same race.
Long shot lifts for Penza
Experienced provincial jockey Jeff Penza was rewarded for a long day's work when $61-shot Summer Flame lifted late to win the listed Denise's Joy Stakes (1100m).
Penza gave the Chris Waller-trained daughter of Written Tycoon from Rosemont Stud an ideal run behind leader Overfull before hitting the front 100m out to beat Gerringong by a neck.
Summer Flame resumed in the 3YO fillies feature after recording a win and two placings in Victoria in her first preparation.
Waller assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said the win was great reward for Penza.
'Whenever he's asked, he'll come in [for trackwork],' Duckworth said. 'He came in this morning and galloped four for us, then went home and rode his two show-jumpers, then got in the car and came here, so he's a hard worker.'
He said the performance of Summer Flame was not a surprise for Waller. 'Chris was tipping it, so he might be happy because she was obviously a crazy old price,' he said.
Archibald import finds edge
Annabel Archibald believes she may have found a key to Cormac T after the import edged out Gentileschi following an unusual lead-in.
Cormac T was scratched on vet's advice last Saturday at Gosford with abrasions to his near-hind leg after becoming fractious in the gates.
He bounced back in the benchmark 78 (1700m), hitting the front late for jockey Tom Sherry then holding out Gentileschi and Kind Words in a thriller. Gentileschi's co-trainer Paul Messara and stewards reviewed the photo before correct weight was declared.
'He obviously didn't gallop last Saturday and we went pretty steady with him early in the week because we wanted to check he was OK,' Archibald said. 'So maybe he's shown us that he likes to be kept slightly on the fresh side.'
It was part of a great day for the Annabel and Rob Archibald yard, which later won the group 1 Doomben 10,000 with Sunshine In Paris.
Snowden has Eagle eye on next race
Champion trainer Peter Snowden was eyeing the listed Queensland Day Stakes (1200m) on June 7 at Eagle Farm with Zealously after the three-year-old cruised to victory in the 1100m benchmark 78.
Loading
A $3.50 favourite after Snowden scratched him last week at Gosford in the hope of firmer ground this week, Zealously relished the drying soft 5 going, kicking clear at the top of the straight and beating Dollar Magic by one and three-quarter lengths.
The winning time of 1:02:13 was inside the track record but may not be official because it was hand timed.
'I'll go to Brisbane with him,' said Snowden, who was born and bred in Scone. 'There's a three-year-old race for him in about three weeks, so I'll head to that, if we get good ground.'
Freedman and Collett find key
Trainer Richard Freedman praised in-form jockey Alysha Collett after she produced a perfectly timed front-running ride to score a breakthrough win on import Walking Painting at Scone in the Midway Handicap (1700m).
Freedman, who trains in partnership with his son, Will, and has stables in Scone, wanted the six-year-old to lead after seven fruitless starts in Australia.
Collett, who had a winning double at Gosford last Saturday, found the front then stacked them up before Walking Painting held on narrowly Northern Eyes and Highborn Harry.
'I said to Alysha, you just go forward and lead, and I said to Kerrin [McEvoy on Let's Fly], you follow her,' Freedman said. 'I said, you slowly ease down and then wait until they straighten up and let him go.'

Promising filly Cantiamo made a winning return at Randwick Kensington on Wednesday with Kris Lees expecting bigger things to come
Trainer Kris Lees will contemplate giving classy filly Cantiamo her chance in Sydney's upcoming Princess Series following her determined fresh victory at Randwick Kensington on Wednesday. Cantiamo, sporting a noticeable winter coat, kicked off her campaign on the right note as a hot $1.55 favourite when wearing down the race fit Nullarbor Jane to score in the Myplate 3YO Fillies Maiden Handicap (1150m). Lees holds Cantiamo in high regard and felt the win had plenty of merit on a heavy track in her first run back from a break. 'It was a slowly run race and she will learn a lot from today,' Lees said. 'The second horse went really well and is race fit and up and going so I think there is a bit of merit to the win. 'She is a work in progress and as you saw in the parade she has some improvement to come so I think she will measure up in better races. 'We will see how she comes through this and see if we try to test her now or try and place her softer.' Lees indicated the Group 2 $300,000 Furious Stakes (1200m), the second leg of Sydney's Princess Series, on September 6 was a possible target for Cantiamo. Cantiamo is already prominent in Group 1 $750,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) betting where she shortened from $26 into $15 following her fresh success. Jockey James McDonald did the steering on Cantiamo and it wasn't long before he helped enhance another promising three-year-old's spring claims. The Chris Waller-trained Sixties broke through for his maiden success at start three in emphatic fashion with a seven length romp in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Handicap (1150m). Waller hopes Sixties will play a part in the spring but won't raise the bar too high.'Naturally we would like to see him in a 1200 or 1300m Handicap on a Saturday, well short of the good horses so he can take a gradual step and maybe join up with them in the late spring,' Waller said. The first of the 'good horses' will make their return this Saturday with the Listed $200,000 The Rosebud (1100m) set to be the main event at Rosehill Gardens. The Rosebud attracted a field of seven acceptors but that number was immediately reduced to six when Shaggy was scratched. Trainer Michael Freedman will saddle up the horse to beat in the form of Pallaton ($2.50 favourite) while Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou have key chances with Skyhook ($3.90) and Blitzburg ($4.60).

Ray Thomas's best bets, quaddie picks and inside mail for Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday
Form analyst Ray Thomas presents his best bets, quaddie picks and inside mail for the eight-race card on Randwick's Kensington track on Wednesday. • â– â– â– â– â– KENSINGTON TIPS BEST BET Race 4 No.1 AXIUS: Promising four-year-old who comes out of a competitive Saturday grade effort to a winnable Kensington midweek race. NEXT BEST Race 6 No.2 BAT OUT OF HELL: Bursting to win a race after three successive minor placings including a close second at Canterbury last week. VALUE BET Race 2 No.6 OUTER BANKS: He stalked the leaders and finished powerfully to win a recent barrier trial at Warwick Farm impressively. LAY OF THE DAY Race 6 No.10 BARBRAY: Even with the J-Mac tax factored in, $4.80 in early markets seems very short for this gelding who is likely to be back in the ruck on a heavy track. QUADDIE Race 5: 1,2,6,8 Race 6: 1,2,8,10 Race 7: 5,12,13,16 Race 8: 1,3,4 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Braith Nock, Sydney's reigning champion apprentice, has six very good chances including Axius, Autumn Dream and Harry's Bar. TRAINER TO FOLLOW Ciaron Maher has winning hopes in four races including a quartet for the Premier's Cup Prelude – Interpretation, Glory Daze, Royal Supremacy and Cosmic Vega. CANTIAMO (3) was heavily backed into favouritism on debut for the Inglis Nursery last summer when she was slow to begin, showed speed to race through and lead into the straight before tiring late for fifth behind Within The Law. Cantiamo hasn't raced since but has looked impressive at the trials, particularly her Gosford heat win late last month when she stalked the leaders then raced clear in the straight. ARTISTIC VENTURE (1) and AUTUMN BLONDE (2) are resuming after showing promise last season including finishing just behind the placegetters in a blanket finish to the Sweet Embrace Stakes. Both are trialling well. NULLARBOR JANE (9) has race fitness on her side, drawn well and has no weight. BET: CANTIAMO (3) to win. I'm going a little wide here with OUTER BANKS (6) in a tough race. The Peter Snowden-trained gelding was in the market at his only start back in April when he was trapped three-wide without cover and dropped out of contention behind Aerodrome at Warwick Farm. Outer Banks resumes off two smart trials, the most recent when he came from off speed and finished strongly between runners to win an 812 heat at Warwick Farm. Drawn awkwardly and will need luck in running but he's good value at double figure odds. BANKNOTE HUSTLER (3) has drawn wide but monstered his rivals in a recent trial win. SANCTIFIED (1) was stakes placed last season and will be charging home. PORTOFINO (7) could be a big improver. BET: OUTER BANKS (6) each way, box trifecta 1,3,6,7. AUTUMN DREAM (2) romped home third-up at Kembla then stayed at 1600m, struck a wet track, but kept working to the line when fourth at Warwick Farm two weeks ago. The step up to 1800m suits and she's very fit. STING IN THE TAIL (6) went back slightly in trip at Canterbury last week and was outsprinted from the turn before finishing sixth to Seven's. He's on the seven-day back-up and is getting out to his right distance range. TAZIMA (1) has been improved by two runs from a spell and the form out of his last start second has been franked. SUNSET PARK (3) is fitter and will appreciate getting out to 1800m. BET: AUTUMN DREAM (2) to win, saver on Sting In The Tail at odds. AXIUS (1) resumed with a strong win over 1100m here then had excuses when fourth to Yoshinobu at Rosehill. Promising four-year-old who is back in midweek grade and looks placed to advantage after the claim. THE REPLICANT (7) is racing well and comes off a tough win in heavy going at Warwick Farm. JOHNNY THE KID (5) races well fresh while VICTORY LANE (4) handles wet conditions. BET: AXIUS (1) to win. PASSEGGIATA (6) is having her first start for the new stable as she tries to snap a losing streak that stretches more than two years. Speedy mare who handles heavy going, she has looked particularly sharp in two recent Rosehill barrier trial wins. She will be in front for a long way. IRON WILL (2) is another who goes well in heavy conditions and comes off a solid Warwick Farm effort two weeks ago. ARE EE QUE (8) is in very good form and has won four of his five starts on heavy tracks. CAVALLO RAMPANTE (1) is a smart mare and a specialist 1000m sprinter. BET: PASSEGGIATA (6) to win. BAT OUT OF HELL (2) was given the run of the race last week and had his chance when narrowly beaten by the handy Seven's at Canterbury. Bat Out Of Hell is on the back up, he's been placed at his last three starts and is bursting to win a race. This is his chance. NARBOLD (8) comes off a good second to Amusing in Saturday grade, is also working up to a win and handles heavy tracks well. BARBRAY (10) ran well when fourth behind Amusing and Narbold last start and rates highly. CRISTAL CLEAR (1) was competitive when resuming and he did win second-up last time in work. BET: BAT OUT OF HELL (2) to win, box trifecta 1,2,8,10, I'm keen on SALTCOATS (16). He has been improved by two runs from a spell and his effort to close late for third at Listed Level in the Winter Challenge last start is a great pointer for this race. He's getting out to his right distance range and he did win over 1800m when last in work, plus he handles heavy tracks. ESTADIO MESTALLA (5) is very fit, racing well and will get through the wet conditions. ROYAL SUPREMACY (13) was big odds when he won over this course and distance last start but looks an improving type. GLORY DAZE (12) hasn't raced for six weeks but was placed in successive stakes races at 2000m. Tough closer but there was a lot to like about LA ROJA (3) 's effort to run on from back in the field for second to Metaphorically at Canterbury. The Replicant ran third and has since won to frank the form. La Roja is promising, drawn well and is well placed back in fillies and mares grade. HARRY'S BAR (1) was impressive winning in Saturday class and will be hard to beat again. LADY BOSS (4) will run her usual competitive race. SAMARELLE (12) was very strong late to win on debut at Newcastle and looks to have a future.

Kris Lees withdraws Adelaide River from Premier's Cup Prelude at Randwick-Kensington as he sweats on start for Age Of Sail
Trainer Kris Lees has decided against rising classy stayer Adelaide River first-up on the very heavy Kensington track but is sweating on a start for Age Of Sail in the Premier's Cup Prelude (1800m) on Wednesday. The Prelude was added to the Kensington meeting after the Royal Randwick washout last Saturday, with the field size subsequently reduced to 12 starters. This left Age Of Sail ($31) as fifth emergency but there have already been three scratchings including stablemate Adelaide River. 'We are going to need a bit of luck to get Age Of Sail into the race,'' Lees admitted. 'He's had a couple of trials and is ready to go. I've nominated him for a race at Doomben on Saturday if he doesn't get a start in the Prelude.'' Kensington was rated a heavy 10 late on Tuesday which prompted Lees to withdraw the Lloyd and Nick Williams-owned Adelaide River from the Premier's Cup Prelude. 'I've nominated Adelaide River for Rosehill and Caulfield on Saturday so we have options,'' Lees said. Adelaide River came to Australia with a big reputation after showing considerable staying potential earlier in his career including a second placing behind champion Auguste Rodin in the Group 1 Irish Derby. But Adelaide River has been unplaced in five starts since joining the Lees stable although he ran encouraging races when fourth in both the Chelmsford Stakes and Caulfield Stakes last spring. Deep Impact colt Auguste Rodin completes the English-Irish Derby double! It's also a first win in the @DDFRacing Irish Derby for Ryan Moore, and Aidan O'Brien's 100th European Classic victory ðŸ' #グーギュストãƒãƒ€ãƒ³ | #ディープインãƒ'クト | #競馬 | @Ballydoyle — The Curragh Racecourse (@curraghrace) July 2, 2023 • Lees then gave Adelaide River a long spell where the six-year-old was gelded and he has been very impressive in three recent barrier trial wins. 'He's a really nice horse and I'm happy with how he is coming up for the spring,'' Lees said. 'His form overseas is great and there were glimpses of that last preparation. I think now that he is a gelding, we might see the best of him.'' The champion Newcastle trainer also has promising filly Cantiamo resuming in the Myplates Handicap (1150m), Cantiamo is superbly bred by Darley's boom sire Too Darn Hot out of Valencay, herself a direct descendant of the legendary broodmare Eight Carat, dam of five Group 1 winners including champion Octagonal and Mouawad. A $220,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase, Cantiamo only had the one start during her juvenile season, where she was heavily backed into favouritism before finishing fifth to top filly Within The Law in the Inglis Nursery. Impressive trial for one heading into her 2nd prep. Cantiamo (2f Too Darn Hot x Valencay) 220k buy for @Leesracing & Bahen Bloodstock from @SledmereStud at @inglis_sales Classic Only had 1 start - 5th Inglis Nursery. Her 4th dam is the great Eight Carat. @DarleyStallions — Breednet (@BreednetNews) July 24, 2025 • Skyhook, Pallaton duel for Rosebud favouritism Lees has given Cantiamo two barrier trials to prepare for her return including her easy Gosford heat win on July 23 where champion jockey James McDonald was so impressed he wanted to stay on the filly for her Kensington comeback. 'The heavy track is not ideal but she has had a couple of trials and has been fit and ready to go for a while now,'' Lees said. 'If we wait too long we might miss our chance to get her to the better fillies races.'' TAB Fixed Odds price assessors are taking no risks with Cantiamo who is the $2.30 favourite in overnight betting to win the Kensington opener. Lees takes another well-bred three-year-old Woodrow ($19) to the races for the first time in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Handicap (1150m). Woodrow, by champion sire Exceed And Excel out of Group 1 winner Miss Wilson, cost $225,000 at the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and has shown promise in two recent trials. 'We've also had Woodrow ready to race and I'm happy to give him his chance on Wednesday,'' the trainer said. Lee's other stable starter is former French gelding Valimi ($17) in the PKF Global Handicap (1550m). 'Valimi is a work in progress,'' Lees admitted. 'I've got to say he has been a little disappointing from what we expected of him when he arrived here but I think his most recent run (fourth behind The Years at Warwick Farm) was a step in the right direction. 'He has been comfortable on soft ground overseas, we will put him up on speed and he should run well.''
