2024 in 100 words
The only undefeated regular season team in college football suffered an ignominious defeat in the Rose Bowl to Ohio State. The Ducks took down the Buckeyes 32-31 in the regular season as time ran out on Ohio State's final drive in Eugene.
The Ducks didn't have another close game again until a late-season visit to Wisconsin. The Badgers mucked the game up just enough but didn't have the offensive firepower to pull the upset in Oregon's 16-13 win. The Ducks then beat Penn State 45-37 in the Big Ten title game before getting blitzed 41-21 by the Buckeyes in Pasadena to end Oregon's playoff hopes.
The quarterback
Dante Moore
The transfer from UCLA spent the 2024 season as Dillon Gabriel's backup. With Gabriel in the NFL, the 2025 season is the chance for Moore to be the third straight Oregon QB to be a Heisman finalist.
Moore played in nine games as a freshman at UCLA in 2023. He was 114-of-123 passing for 1,610 yards and 11 TDs with nine interceptions. He appeared in five games in 2024 and threw just eight passes.
The former five-star recruit was the top player in Michigan and the No. 3 player in the country in the class of 2023 when he committed to the Bruins. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning applauded Moore's patience at Big Ten media day as the junior inherits a very quarterback-friendly offensive system.
'I think probably what impressed me most with Dante is not wanting to be in a microwave society, not wanting to just get it fast because there's an opportunity in front of him, but to have the slow-cooked meal, to have the opportunity to sit back and mature and learn, learn from experiences that you don't necessarily have to be on the field to feel. The same goes for [QB Austin Novosad]. The same goes for [QB Luke Moga] and the other guys in our program.
'Those guys have learned from great quarterbacks that have done it at a really, really high level. For him to have that opportunity, show maturity, develop in his leadership, I think it's going to create great opportunities for our team.'
Moore should have the opportunity for a lot of completions in Oregon's offense. Bo Nix set the FBS record with a 77.4% completion percentage in 2023 and Gabriel completed 72.9% of his passes in 2024. Both players threw for at least 30 TDs. If Moore comes close to those numbers, Oregon's offense shouldn't miss a beat.
Non-QB to watch
S Dillon Thieneman
Thieneman arrives at Oregon after spending his first two seasons at Purdue. He was a second-team all-Big Ten selection in both years and had 106 tackles and six interceptions as a freshman. He failed to grab a pick in 2024 but still had 104 tackles to lead a Purdue defense that was on the field far too often during a rough season.
The junior should immediately step into the starting lineup at safety as Oregon had to replace three starters at defensive back. The Ducks allowed just 186 passing yards per game in 2024 as opposing QBs completed less than 56% of their passes.
Best position group
Running back
It was a toss-up between the backfield and the guys blocking up front, with a slight edge to the running backs. After Jordan James rushed for 1,267 yards and 15 TDs in 2024, Oregon added Tulane running back Makhi Hughes in the transfer portal. Hughes rushed for 1,378 yards and seven TDs as a freshman in 2023 and had 1,401 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns in 2024.
Noah Whittington also returns after rushing for 540 yards and six touchdowns. Don't sleep on former D2 All-American Jay Harris either. He rushed for over 1,400 yards in 2023 at Northwest Missouri State before redshirting at Oregon in 2024.
Biggest game
Sept. 27 at Penn State
We get a Big Ten title game rematch in the first month of the season. Penn State carved Oregon up on the ground in that game while Oregon WR Tez Johnson had 11 catches for 181 yards and a TD. The Nittany Lions have a new defensive coordinator in former Ohio State assistant Jim Knowles, and Oregon will need to rely on new faces at receiver with Johnson in the NFL and Evan Stewart likely to miss part or all of the season with a knee injury he suffered in the spring.
Why Oregon is at No. 4
That game against Penn State clearly looks like Oregon's toughest of the season barring a surprise somewhere else in the Big Ten. The Ducks travel to Iowa and Washington, but get Indiana and USC at home and avoid both Michigan and Ohio State.
That friendly schedule should put Oregon in the driver's seat for a second straight Big Ten title game appearance.
The Ducks will also have a very experienced offensive line that could gel quickly. Oregon added Emmanuel Pregnon (USC) and Isaiah World (Nevada) in the transfer portal and are hoping for a healthy season from Matthew Bedford. He played in just one game due to injury after transferring from Indiana in 2024.
World was one of the most sought-after offensive linemen in the transfer portal and should start at left tackle.
There are a couple questions at receiver with Stewart's absence and the departure of TE Terrance Ferguson. Malik Benson arrives from Florida State and there should be enough depth, though Oregon would be thrilled to have a clear No. 1 target emerge like Troy Franklin in 2023 and Johnson in 2024.
Linebacker Bryce Boettcher is also back after leading the team in tackles (94) in 2024. Matayo Uiagalelei steps into the starting lineup full-time after recording 9.5 sacks in 2024 and Teitum Tuioti is also back after he had 5.5 sacks. The defensive line also adds former four-star recruit Bear Alexander after stops at Georgia and USC. Alexander redshirted in 2024 after playing four games for the Trojans.

NBA Cup schedule announced with games starting Oct. 31, some on NBC and Peacock
Both times the NBA Cup has been lifted, it has been by one of the legends of the game — LeBron James in 2023 and Giannis Antetokounmpo last year. The NBA Cup can also tell us something about teams we may want to keep an eye on in May and June. Last December, the Oklahoma City Thunder were playing in the NBA Cup Finals (but had an off night and fell to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks; they were ready for the big stage by the time June rolled around). Two years ago, the Indiana Pacers, an up-and-coming team, reached the NBA Cup Finals, where they lost to the Lakers. However, they used the momentum from that run to reach the Eastern Conference Finals that year, then the NBA Finals this past season. The NBA Cup schedule has been released, with games starting on Oct. 31 and running through December, with some of them on NBC and streaming on Peacock. The NBA Cup opens with a Halloween night double header streamed on Prime: the Celtics at 76ers (7 p.m. ET), followed by the Lakers at Grizzlies (9:30 p.m. ET). All 30 NBA teams will play at least four NBA Cup games within their group of five teams, then the winners of each group, as well as one wild card from each conference, will advance to a knockout round. The NBA Cup semi-finals will take place Dec. 13, with the Cup Finals on Dec. 16 in Las Vegas. Games on NBC, Peacock Two critical games in the final week of group play will be broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Those games are: • Magic at 76ers (8 p.m. ET)• Clippers at Lakers (11 p.m. ET) Philly hosting Orlando features two East teams with high expectations entering this season after both were rocked by injuries a season ago. If everyone can stay healthy, this showdown between Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner against Paul George and Joel Embiid will be must watch. Lakers fans like to say there is no rivalry with the Clippers, no battle for Los Angeles — until you tell them the Clippers have been the better team and the better run franchise for the past decade. These games between two teams that project to be top-six in the West are always entertaining, with LeBron and James Harden putting on a show. Other NBA Cup games to watch Here are a few more NBA Cup games to circle on your calendar. Nov. 7: Rockets at SpursNov. 7: Warriors at NuggetsNov. 14: Warriors at SpursNov. 21: Nuggets at RocketsNov. 28: Bucks at KnicksNov. 28: Mavericks at Lakers

Caleb Williams will get his first preseason playing time in Johnson's offense when Bears host Bills
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson sees the second preseason game as the ideal time to get quarterback Caleb Williams some on-field reps. Williams will see game action in Johnson's offense for the first time when the Bears host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. Backups Tyson Bagent, Case Keenum and Austin Reed took the snaps in last Sunday's 24-24 tie against Miami in the preseason opener. 'Our starters are going to play, everyone is going to play,' Johnson said Wednesday. 'Last week and really all through camp I've been pretty consistent with the thought of reps, reps, reps are the most important thing to get (Williams) up to speed.' Johnson said he got Williams 80 to 100 practice plays within the offense that he wouldn't have had if he had played in Sunday's game. Of course, Williams wasn't facing a live defense trying to sack him. 'This week it's a different schedule, a different length of time in terms of between games, and all that,' Johnson said. 'So our plan right now is the guys that sat out last week they will be playing this week.' Williams' play in training camp practices has been inconsistent but Johnson has seen improvement from the second-year QB. 'I'm pleased with how he is able to spit these plays out right now,' Johnson said. 'He's made significant progress in that regard and once we get going here in a game week, we're going to condense the verbiage even more. But we have challenged him. It's been a lot. 'That was by design, and so if we struggle at all in the huddle to get the play out, then the delays are going to pop up. That's a little bit part of the learning process and us growing, but by design we have made this very challenging and hard and we know what we need to do as a staff to elevate some of that pressure. I think Week 1 we're going to be in a good spot.' What's less clear is who will start at left tackle. Starter Braxton Jones is being challenged by rookie Ozzy Trapilo. However, at Wednesday's practice, second-year undrafted free agent Theo Benedet alternated with Jones at left tackle with the starters, while Trapilo was the backup right tackle. Jaylon Johnson 'on track' for return Cornerback Jaylon Johnson remains on the non-football injury list, but Ben Johnson sounded more optimistic Wednesday that the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback will be ready for the season opener. 'He's right on track, he's right where he need to be,' Johnson said. 'It's really like I said, those type of injuries you really don't know. Short term, long term, every guy is a little bit different, but I think we're going in the right direction.' ___ AP NFL:

Seahawks plan to play starters, if only briefly, Friday night
The Seahawks haven't seen Sam Darnold on the field in game action yet. That looks like it will change Friday. Coach Mike Macdonald said the plan is to play the starters against the Chiefs. "Might be a couple of guys that will vary based on whether they get out there or not. We're still kind of working through it right now for guys who are going to sit the game out," Macdonald said, via video from Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. It's not clear how long the starters will play but at least a series. "I don't think we need to, but I think it's the best thing for us," Macdonald said. Geno Smith, the starting quarterback for the Seahawks last season, did not play until the third preseason game. He saw five snaps. The Seahawks rested 30 players in the preseason opener against the Raiders.
