Video: Former UAE soldier killed in horrific crash during weekend break to Salalah
Seventy-year-old Mohammad Faraj, a former UAE soldier, was travelling with his wife and daughter to Salalah when their car crashed into another vehicle on the highway that is commonly used by UAE residents heading towards Oman.
The three members were going down to the neighbouring country for a trip over the weekend and were planning to come back by the next week.
"I received a call at around 4pm from the authorities informing me of the incident. My father had passed away at around 2pm," said Sabri Al Tamimi, one of the victim's six children.
An Omani citizen, who was in the other car, also lost his life in the accident. His body was transported from Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah to Liwa in North Batinah Governorate by the Police Aviation.
A video being shared online shows the two cars (white and black) crashing into each other, while driving at high speeds. The son confirmed that his family was in the black SUV.
Mohammad Faraj died at the hospital, while Sabri's mother, 69-year-old Fathima Al Hashmi, is still in the Omani medical facility, where she is currently in a critical state but seems to be on the road to recovery, according to her son. His 42-year-old sister, who was accompanying her parents on the trip, was unharmed.
The remaining family members are expecting to receive their father's body by today evening (Sunday, August 3) or tomorrow (Monday, August 4), after which they will proceed with the burial in Dubai, where the family resides.
"We are all in shock as of now. Our family is still grappling with the news. My father was a great man," said the grieving son.
Mohammad Faraj was known for his valour, as he spent 27 years of his life serving in the UAE Armed Forces. Not only that, he had also survived cancer once in his life after battling it for years, after he was originally diagnosed in 1989. However, during the past five years, the Big C had returned. Tamimi's mother, also a cancer survivor, fought breast cancer for five years.
The couple was known for their pride towards their nation. Back in 2012, the duo made a 25-metre long flag, as both battled cancer at the time, on the occasion of the 41st National Day, which also happened to be their 41st wedding anniversary.
The family had adorned their villa in Mirdif with the flag, paying ode to the nation's leaders and thanking them for helping with their treatment and getting access to the best healthcare in the UAE and abroad.

Retired Emirati soldier dies in horrific road accident in Oman
On Tuesday, the funeral of the retired Emirati soldier, Mohammed Faraj Al-Tamimi, 70, was held in Dubai and the funeral prayer took place after Asr prayer at Al-Qusais Cemetery, attended by his sons, family members, friends, and well-wishers. The deceased passed away last Saturday in a tragic traffic accident on Haima Road in the Sultanate of Oman, while he was on his way to Salalah with his wife and daughter for a weekend getaway when the vehicle they were in collided with another coming from the opposite direction at high speed. The accident resulted in Al Tamimi's death and the death of the Omani driver, Nasser Al-Kindi, a well-known mathematics teacher. Al Tamimi's daughter survived, while the wife, Fatima Al-Hashimi, sustained severe injuries, including broken ribs and lung lacerations and was hospitalised and remains under medical observation. Doctors advised against air travel for her at this time, preventing her from attending her husband's farewell. The deceased's son said, "I returned with my father's body along with my sister, while my mother remains in Salalah receiving treatment. We hope doctors will allow her to return in the next two days once her condition stabilizes'. He clarified that the family will receive condolences until Thursday evening, in two periods: from 10am until Dhuhr prayer and from after Asr prayer until Isha prayer. The men's condolence gathering will be held at a designated location in Mirdif, while women will be received at the deceased's home in the same area, he added.

Oman: Two arrested for smuggling 15kg drugs through shipping company
Two individuals smuggling narcotics through a shipping company in Oman, authorities said on Tuesday. The accused were caught while they were attempting to send over 15kg of opium across the border to a European nation. The Directorate General for Combatting Drugs and Psychotropic Substances nabbed the individuals in an operation that tracked the shipment of water pumps being brought into the Gulf country. The authority, in cooperation with the Directorate General of Customs, made the arrest after they found the drugs professionally concealed in the shipment. Appropriate legal action is being taken against the suspects. Last month, authorities in Oman intercepted a fishing vessel attempting to illegally enter its territorial waters and arrested two individuals of Iranian nationality on charges of drug smuggling. The Omani Coast Guard, in co-ordination with the South Al Batinah Governorate Police, intercepted the boat. Authorities confirmed that the suspects were in possession of large quantities of crystal meth, hashish, marijuana, and more than 68,000 psychotropic pills.

20-year-old Saudi student killed in UK; body to be repatriated by embassy
The Saudi Arabian embassy in the UK is following up on the incident of assault on a 20-year-old Saudi student in the British city of Cambridge, which led to his death. In a statement posted on X, the embassy confirmed that it continues to coordinate with the relevant British authorities to uncover the circumstances of this painful incident. They are also preparing to complete the procedures for transporting the body of the deceased to Saudi Arabia. "The embassy and all its staff extend their sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, asking God Almighty to have mercy on him," they said. Cambridgeshire Police responded to reports of violence in the Mill Park area of the city shortly before midnight on Friday. They found the 20-year-old student, Mohammed Al-Qasim, with serious injuries. He died at the scene soon after. The police said on Monday that it is believed Al-Qasim was "stabbed in an unprovoked attack". He was on a 10-week placement studying English in the city when he died. In a statement, the family said, 'Muhammad Yousef Al-Qasim. A young man brimming with enthusiasm, brimming with chivalry and courage. He was a dutiful son, a loving brother, and the leader of the family in spirit, not in appearance. He was cheerful, chivalrous, pure of heart, quick to give, and passionate about others. Over time, he became the family's charisma, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy in every gathering. He was his father's support, his familiar companion, and the assistant to his uncles and maternal uncles. He was the most compassionate person to ever visit a mother's heart and the closest to his sisters' embrace.' A 21-year-old man from Cambridge, charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place, appeared at Peterborough Magistrates' Court. He has been remanded to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on Wednesday.
