‘Got to be issuing refunds' – Ronnie O'Sullivan's World Snooker Championship session over after 17 minutes

The Sun28-04-2025
RONNIE O'SULLIVAN and Luca Brecel required less than 17 minutes to book their spots in the quarter-finals of the World Snooker Championship.
The Rocket, 49, scored a break of 95 to eliminate Pang Junxu 13-4 at 7.27pm on Monday evening.

O'Sullivan now plays Si Jiahui, who beat Ben Woollaston 13-10 in round two.
Minutes before that, 2023 champ Brecel notched a 71 break to get the one frame required to knock out Ding Junhui 13-4.
Ticket-holders who had paid more than £50 for the night had to watch Big Break-style entertainment involving Dennis Taylor, Jimmy White and Ken Doherty.
But some snooker fans were left in bemusement that no refunds would be handed out - despite less than half an hour of action in the evening session.
One wrote on X: "If you'd bought tickets for the snooker tonight you'd have got about 15 mins of viewing. They should get a refund tbh."
Another agreed: "Got to be issuing refunds."
While a third commented: "People will have bought these tickets 11 months ago. I wonder if there's a clause of a partial refund if you don't get to see more than an hours snooker? Probably not."
Crucible legends Doherty, White and Taylor took to the arena for trick shots and frame play.
The trio have a combined age of 193 and are on site in Sheffield due to broadcaster duties.
John Virgo, who co-fronted the BBC show Big Break between 1991 and 2002, also joined in to keep the crowd engaged.
Shaun Murphy talks about his future ambitions and how Ronnie O'Sullivan makes snooker more exciting
Earlier in the day, World No1 Judd Trump booked his place in the quarter-finals with a brilliant 13-10 win over Shaun Murphy.
The Ace in the Pack outlasted the Masters champion, who claimed he had "never played better" at the Crucible.
Murphy said: "It's frustrating because that's the best I have ever played here and lost.

"I don't think anyone has played as well as Judd and I over a long distance this year.
"There have been a lot of times this season when my opponent has played out of his boots.
"If I'd had more chances I felt I would have taken them.
"But I watched two and half sessions of Judd Trump magic.
'If he's able to sustain that level of performance, he'll win the tournament, without question.
'If I were allowed to bet on snooker matches, I'd have as much as I possibly could on Judd Trump."

Rory McIlroy: I don't think it's possible to be a playing Ryder Cup captain

Masters champion Rory McIlroy revealed he has already 'shot down' the prospect of becoming a playing Ryder Cup captain in the future. Europe's leading points scorer in their victory in Rome two years ago said the idea had already been raised with him but he rejected it out of hand. Advertisement McIlroy, aged 36 and currently world number two, has plenty of time left at the top as a player, but it is a dilemma facing United States captain Keegan Bradley, whose form this year has elevated him to 12th in the world and 10th on America's qualification list. United States Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley (Brian Lawless/PA). 'I've been asked to do that and I've turned it down,' said McIlroy, who was the first player to automatically qualify for Europe's team for next month's event at Bethpage in New York. 'The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon has come up and I've shot it down straight away because I don't think you can do it. 'If you'd have said it 20 years ago I'd say it was probably possible to do, but how big of a spectacle it is and everything that's on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in. Advertisement 'There's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big. 'The captain's only going to be able to play one session on Friday, one session on Saturday. Would you rather not have a player that has the flexibility to go twice if he's playing well?' On Thursday McIlroy will tee off alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler in the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club outside Baltimore. The Northern Irishman opted to skip the opening event of the FedEx Cup as he knew he was already guaranteed a spot in the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship next week, and that drew some criticism. Advertisement However, McIlroy argued his year is far from over as, in addition to the Ryder Cup, he will head back to the DP World Tour for a number of events, including the Irish Open and BMW Championship at Wentworth, before trying to win his seventh Race to Dubai title in November. 'A lot of the guys aren't 18 years into their professional career. I feel like I'm in a little bit of a different position,' he added. 'I'm playing nine times between now and the end of the year, so I've still got a pretty busy stretch coming up and I just think that extra week off will do me good with the events coming up.'
