Community identifies 23-year-old as man shot dead by police in Ontario court
Wapekeka First Nation says the community is mourning the death of 23-year-old Tyresse Kenny Padro Cree Roundsky, who died on July 31.
Shibogama First Nations Council, which counts the First Nation as a member, confirmed that he was shot in a temporary courtroom housed at a youth centre.
Wapekeka First Nation says he will be missed by his family, friends and primary caregiver.
The Special Investigations Unit is investigating the shooting, which they say happened after a police officer was approached by a man with a knife at the fly-in courtroom in the middle of the day.
Investigators say the man and the officer had an interaction before the officer shot his gun at the man who was pronounced dead on scene.
The SIU says a post-mortem exam was scheduled for Sunday, though the investigation is ongoing and further information has yet to be released.
Wapekeka First Nation said in a statement that funeral arrangements are being made for Roundsky and that a crisis worker is available for people who need support.
'His memories are alive in all of us,' the statement said.

EDMONTON – Police have charged the chief of a First Nation in southern Alberta with two counts of sexual assault. Roy Albert Whitney, the 71-year-old chief of Tsuut'ina Nation, west of Calgary, was arrested Wednesday. Police say a 33-year-old man was assaulted in Edmonton in 1994. They also say a 38-year-old man was assaulted in the city in 2005. Police say the complainants are both from Tsuut'ina and were known to Whitney. Whitney says the allegations are false and he will continue as chief. 'I have dedicated my life to serving the Tsuut'ina people with honesty, respect, and commitment. That work will not stop,' he said in a statement Thursday. 'I believe in truth and due process, and I will fully co-operate with any lawful proceedings to ensure the facts are made clear. Until that time, I ask our citizens and the public to withhold judgment and avoid speculation.' Lawyer Jim Lutz says his client voluntarily turned himself in and was released from custody. RCMP searching for suspect in child abduction
Manitoba RCMP have issued a warrant for a man who allegedly broke into a home in Lake St. Martin First Nation and was reported to have abducted two children. According to RCMP, the incident took place on Aug. 1. Officers were called at 10:30 p.m. for a report an armed man broke into a home and possibly took two children. Mounties said a woman was at home with five children and three other adults when a man who she knew allegedly broke in and started threatening everyone with a homemade weapon. The adults, along with three children all under the age of 12 were able to escape. Officers were told two very young children couldn't be safely taken out of the home and were inside with the armed man. 'Officers entered the residence and searched the home for the suspect and the two children,' RCMP said in a news release. 'They located a one-year-old infant sleeping safely, however, the armed male as well as a two-year-old infant were not in the home.' The two-year-old was later found unharmed at a nearby home, but the suspect was not found. A warrant has been issued for 29-year-old Allan Marsden of Lake St. Martin First Nation. He is facing charges of four counts of assault with a weapon, abduction of a person under 14, mischief under $5,000 and breaking and entering. None of the charges have been proven in court. Anyone with information on his location is asked to call RCMP at 204-659-2682.
