Michael Sheen shares dad's poingnant final words about Welsh town
Michael Sheen has opened up about the touching last words his father spoke concerning the Welsh town he called home.
Michael, 56, was born in Newport and moved to England at the age of five. Wales beckoned however and the family settled down in Baglan, Port Talbot, three years later.
Despite Sheen's ascent to Hollywood fame, his parents, Irene and Meyrick, remained living in the house where Sheen grew up. It meant the actor, famed for playing figures such as Tony Blair, Brian Clough, and David Frost, would regularly return to Port Talbot to see his parents.
Previously, Michael said: "As soon as I see the steelworks, there is no feeling like it for me. I get emotional coming back to this town."
Tragedy struck when Meyrick, after a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer's disease, passed away last year, leaving Sheen, alongside his mother Irene and sister Joanne at Meyrick's bedside during his final moments. Given the chance to reflect on their last exchange, Sheen chose to convey a simple yet profound message to his father, telling him "I love you" before his passing.
Following Meyrick's death, who was known for his work both as a respected steelworker and as an impersonator of Jack Nicholson, heartfelt tributes flooded in. A mural dedicated to Meyrick now stands in Port Talbot, accompanying one of Sheen himself—a tribute the acclaimed actor of 'Good Omens' fame described as "amazing", reports Wales Online.
Meyrick held a deep affection for his local area, dedicating years to community involvement in Port Talbot, which notably was on his mind during his final conversation with his son.
In an interview with The Times, Michael shared: "But the last thing he said to me was about Port Talbot. By the end, he was confusing and conflating things, but the spirit was clear."
Michael recounted: "I was telling him about the possibility of a project in town and he wasn't able to say very much, but the last thing he said to me wasn't about acting. He was so passionate about his community, where he grew up and lived all his life, so communicating that to me was the most important thing to him at the end."
He added, reflecting on the significance of his father's last words: "It was very telling. He just said, 'Get it done, Michael. Get it done.'".
In talks with WalesOnline, Michael, celebrated for his roles in Frost/Nixon, The Damned United, and The Deal, expressed his profound connection to his Welsh heritage: "My Welsh roots are everything, it's where I come from, the people I come from, the land I come from. In my own lifetime it's made me who I am."
Michael, also a family man, shares daughter Lily, 26, with Kate Beckinsale, and has two younger children, Lyra, five, and Mabli, three, with his current partner, actress Anna Lundberg, aged 30.
He believes that the Meyrick mural will serve as a lasting tribute for his children to remember their grandfather and for Irene, Meyrick's partner of nearly seven decades, whom he met when she was just 14 years old.

Clarkson's Farm star 'hobbling around' after being spotted on mobility scooter
A Clarkson's Farm star is in some pain after suffering a 'busted ankle'. Kaleb Cooper, 26, has become a household name since rising to fame with Jeremy Clarkson on the Amazon Prime Video series, which is set on the former Top Gear star's Diddly Squat farm. The farmer has become a star in his own right, and he was kept busy at this year's Royal Three Counties show in Worcestershire despite his recent injury. 'I may be hobbling around because I've got a bit of a busted ankle, but it'll be fine,' he said in a video shared to the event's official Instagram account before a packed schedule on Sunday. He kicked off his day at a Future of Farming talk at 11am, followed by a Machinery Demo in the Main Arena at 12:45pm, and an appearance at the Food & Drink Theatre 45 minutes later. Earlier in the week, he'd been spotted at Cereals 2025 – another farming festival – moving around on a mobility scooter in photos published by the Oxford Mail. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Kaleb seemed to be in good spirits as he chatted to locals, although his foot was still in a protective boot at the time. He had vowed to still be at the Three Counties event too, despite revealing days earlier that he had 'fractured' his ankle. In another Instagram Story, he said: 'Just got back from football and trying to haul my a** to shut the chickens up… look at that ankle.' Thankfully for Kaleb, his schedule will start to get a bit easier after Jeremy confirmed Clarkson's Farm is taking a 'short break' after its upcoming fifth series. The programme recently returned for a fourth season, and while another series is already in the works, there'll be a chance for everyone to down tools in the near future. Jeremy has had some health setbacks, with a heart operation in 2024, and he recently put his back out with no clue how he managed it. 'I'd do a sixth if there was a reason for doing it, like a bloody good story. But if, say, my back turns out to be cancerous then I wouldn't,' he quipped in an interview with The Times. The former Grand Tour presenter confirmed that either way, there'll be a 'short break' after the fifth series. He added: 'Whatever happens we'll definitely take a short break as the crews are all worn out. We've been filming here two or three days a week, every week, for five years. Everybody could do with a rest.' There had been some concern from fans that Kaleb's role was being scaled back for the fourth series as farmhand Harriet Cowan appeared to be replacing him. However, Jeremy soon explained that Kaleb's other commitments meant he needed someone else to help out. More Trending 'What happened is this, he went away on his speaking tour, for a couple of months because he imagined that after four years, I'd be able to manage on my own,' Jeremy explained. 'I didn't – I made a complete mess of everything and had to bring in a young girl called Harriet. Harriet is brilliant and looked after the fort until he got back.' Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley announce new This Morning presenter
This Morning has welcomed a new presenter to the ITV daytime show. This Morning's Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley have announced the arrival of a fresh face on the ITV daytime show. Amidst several alterations, including tweaks to Lorraine Kelly's 9am show and Loose Women, the network is stirring excitement with some shake-ups. None other than ex-Love Island contestant Olivia Attwood, who has been a familiar face on Loose Women for two years, is stepping onto the This Morning stage. The 34-year-old, whose journey to stardom began in the 2017 edition of Love Island alongside Chris Hughes, has witnessed a remarkable evolution in her career, venturing from reality TV onto shows like The Only Way Is Essex and even dipping into I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! not to mention fronting documentaries, reports Wales Online. On Monday's episode, while discussing her latest series Olivia Attwood: The Price of Perfection, Olivia spilled the beans that she'd be gracing the iconic blue sofa regularly. Ben kicked off the discussion, teasing: "We've got some big news about This Morning and you in the summer." Olivia couldn't hide her enthusiasm, declaring: "It's very exciting! I will be joining you guys on the hosting team." Then, taking her position next to Cat on the presenter's side, she confessed: "This feels more surreal now." Expressing her joy, she revealed: "It's a huge honour, I've grown up watching this show, and being a part of the daytime team with Loose Women has been the best experience and this feels very natural." She will join ranks with names like Alison Hammond, Josie Gibson, and Dermot O'Leary, who step in to present when regulars Cat and Ben are away. Last year, Cat and Ben stepped into the roles held by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield after Schofield exited amid a scandal involving an "unwise but not illegal" affair with a younger colleague, followed by Holly's departure for personal reasons. Olivia's move to This Morning comes after ITV announced a series of shake-ups to morning programming. ITV revealed changes to their morning TV schedule which will include a trimmed-down version of Lorraine, now set to run from 9.30am to 10am, but only for 30 weeks per year on a seasonal rotation. As a result, Good Morning Britain will extend its airtime to three and a half hours, widening to four during the periods Lorraine isn't broadcasting. Furthermore, Loose Women is returning to a 30-week annual schedule, resembling its pre-2016 routine, with these alterations taking effect from January 2026. Kevin Lygo, the Head of ITV's Media and Entertainment said: "Daytime is a really important part of what we do, and these scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust as well generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres." He added: "These changes also allow us to consolidate our news operations and expand our national, international and regional news output and to build upon our proud history of trusted journalism at a time when our viewers need accurate, unbiased news coverage more than ever." The popular daytime show This Morning is set to stick with its regular slot of 10am to 12.30pm on weekdays, but it's all change for the location as the programme moves to a swanky new studio in the heart of London. Lygo remarked: "I recognise that our plans will have an impact on staff off screen in our Daytime production teams, and we will work with ITV Studios and ITN as they manage these changes to produce the shows differently from next year, and support them through this transition." He also reflected on the station's longstanding tradition, noting: "Daytime has been a core element of ITV's schedule for over 40 years and these changes will set ITV up to continue to bring viewers award winning news, views and discussion as we enter our eighth decade." This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1 and ITVX.
