Why Keegan Bradley can thank Jack Nicklaus for chance at being a Ryder Cup playing captain
Ewan Murray joins Golf Today to compare Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald's differing tasks in selecting Ryder Cup rosters. OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Keegan Bradley has the support of key players and the opportunity to become the first playing captain in the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer in 1963 at East Lake. And it's all because of Jack Nicklaus. After the Americans won at East Lake against Great Britain & Ireland — back then it wasn't much of a competition — the PGA of America's executive committee changed the bylaws so that a captain could not play. It felt the captain's duties were too extensive. Fast forward to Dec. 16, 1982, when the PGA of America appointed 42-year-old Jack Nicklaus to be the U.S. captain. The committee voted unanimously to allow a captain to play. There were no captain's picks for the 1983 matches at PGA National. The PGA Championship winner was guaranteed a spot on the team and Nicklaus nearly pulled that off, finishing one shot behind Hal Sutton at Riviera. Captain's picks have been introduced, but the rule was left in place for a playing captain. Bradley would have to win the BMW Championship for any chance at the six automatic spots, but there's that small issue of whether he should pick himself. Xander Schauffele has told Bradley he needs to bring his clubs to Bethpage Black for the Sept. 26-28 matches. Patrick Cantlay on Tuesday said, 'If I was captain, I'd pick Keegan.' 'I think he's definitely one of the best American players, and his results have shown that,' Cantlay said at Caves Valley. Golf Channel Staff, Bradley has said he would take it up with the assistant captains and the six automatic qualifiers, the same way he would consider other players as picks. He doesn't make his picks until Aug. 27, after the Tour Championship, giving Bradley two weeks of high-end competition. He currently is No. 10 in the standings. As for the automatic six picks, Scottie Scheffler, Schauffele and J.J. Spaun are mathematically secured to make the team. They are followed by Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau and Harris English, with Justin Thomas just outside the top six.

Patrick Cantlay, Rickie Fowler join chorus that Keegan Bradley should play in 2025 Ryder Cup
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Everyone has an opinion on whether Keegan Bradley should pick himself for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Six players will officially automatically qualify for the American side led by Captain Keegs after this week's BMW Championship and then he'll have one more week to see how things play out at the Tour Championship before picking his final six members of the 12-man side that will try to win back the Cup at Bethpage Black in late September. The captain's pick will be made on Aug. 27. 'If I was the captain, I'd pick Keegan. I think he's played great,' said Patrick Cantlay, who is on the outside looking in at No. 15 in the U.S. point standings but has been a key cog in the last several U.S. sides, including the Presidents Cup. 'If he feels that he can play golf like a normal week given all his other responsibilities, I'm just saying that if I was the captain I think he's definitely one of the best American players, and his results have shown that.' Bradley enters this week's BMW Championship at Caves Valley outside of Baltimore as the No. 10 ranked player in the Official World Golf Ranking. He's also No. 10 in the Ryder Cup points standings. Bradley initially said he would have to finish in the top 6 and that he wouldn't pick himself but he has since softened that stance after winning the Travelers Championship in June. Cantlay isn't the only American who thinks Bradley needs to be on the team. 'I would pick him too,' said Rickie Fowler. 'I think it would be hard to find really any or many Americans that would argue that point. We'll see. I know he's maybe getting to the area of the 10, 11 number on points of where he may think, like, 'Is this a spot where I should not pick myself?'' Bradley's game has cooled off since his victory. He hasn't finished better than T-30 in his last four starts, including a missed cut at the Wyndham Championship and began last week with a triple bogey in his first round and never really recovered, finishing T-44. Count Hal Sutton, the 2004 U.S. captain, among those who think Bradley has played well enough to be on the team but should relinquish his captain duties to one of his capable assistants. 'As a captain you're no better than (your players) are playing and if they're not playing well, it's pretty hard to win. You can't out-captain out of that, so I'd just play,' he said. And why should Bradley pass the baton on the captain duties? 'Because it takes your mind off of the playing if you've got to make some decisions on being the captain too. He's got to make some decisions on being captain too. He can let one of them do it,' explained Sutton.

J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele have now qualified for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Who's left?
The Ryder Cup is just a half-dozen weeks away, and the home side is starting to take shape. After a runner-up finish in the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where he lost in a playoff, J.J. Spaun became an automatic qualifier for the U.S. side, an unlikely rise after starting the 2025 season outside the Official World Golf Ranking top 100. He's now up to No. 6. Also, Xander Schauffele — who has made 70 straight cuts on the PGA Tour, the sixth-longest streak ever — has mathematically secured his spot on the team, meaning half of the six automatic slots have been filled. Scottie Scheffler locked up his position on Captain Keegan Bradley's side a while back. The 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York is just 46 days away. Team USA will be looking to recapture the Ryder Cup after the Europeans dominated Rome in 2023. The Europeans will be captained by Luke Donald in this year's edition. Bradley has a big decision to make after his recent win at the Travelers Championship: Does he play, does he stay as captain, or both? Jordan Spieth jokingly said he hopes Bradley doesn't play, leaving an extra spot up for grabs. The competition will be contested at Bethpage Black, a creation of legendary architect A.W. Tillinghast, which has been a part of golf history since its opening in 1936. Nestled in suburban Long Island, Bethpage State Park features five 18-hole regulation golf courses, including the esteemed Black Course. It will be the first time the Ryder Cup graces its greens, but the course has previously hosted the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009. The 2019 PGA Championship was also held at Bethpage Black, with Brooks Koepka emerging as the tournament champion.
