Eutelsat reports better-than-expected full year earnings

Yahoo8 hours ago
By Gianluca Lo Nostro
(Reuters) -French satellite operator Eutelsat reported better-than-expected annual earnings on Tuesday, driven by growing interest in its satellite internet services from government and corporate customers.
Eutelsat gained the spotlight this year as European governments sought home-grown solutions for satellite services, aiming to reduce their reliance on U.S. providers.
Revenues from video, connectivity and government services reached 1.24 billion euros ($1.43 billion) in the year ended June 30, up 0.8% from a year earlier.
Financial analysts had expected those revenues to total 1.21 billion euros, according to a consensus poll provided by Eutelsat.
The Paris-based group hopes to offset declining income from its video business by gaining a foothold in the satellite internet market, where SpaceX's Starlink dominates.
Eutelsat said revenues from its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites rose 84.1% yearly to 187 million euros.
Higher revenues for government services reflected services delivered in Ukraine and increased demand from other non-U.S. governments, the company said.
Eutelsat expects LEO revenues to grow by 50% next year, saying it will compensate, but not yet outweigh the decline in its legacy business, which are impacted by additional Russian sanctions.

Ahmedhodzic's bargain Feyenoord transfer fee revealed

Feyenoord are reportedly paying just under €7 million for summer signing Anel Ahmedhodzic, according to Voetbal International. The 26-year-old defender was quickly acquired from Sheffield United on Tuesday. Ahmedhodzic has signed a four-year contract in Rotterdam and could make his debut for Feyenoord on Wednesday as the Rotterdam side face Fenerbahçe in the preliminary round of the Champions League. As VoetbalPrimeur explain, Feyenoord are doing everything they can to get the Bosnian eligible to play in the two-legged tie against José Mourinho's team. 'The club are receiving assistance from the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) in this regard.' Feyenoord bought out Ahmedhodzic's one-year contract with Sheffield United for a transfer fee of approximately €6.9 million, VI reports. 'There is also a bonus and resale structure.' Immediately, on first viewing, this seems like a good deal, as Transfermarkt estimates Ahmedhodzic's value to be considerably higher, at 18 million euros. Ahmedhodzic had been under contract with Sheffield United since the summer of 2022, having signed from Swedish club Malmö for approximately €4.5 million. He made 114 appearances for the English club, scoring 12 goals and providing three assists from defence. GBeNeFN | Max Bradfield

Caterpillar tariff warning, Yum misses, Marriott cuts outlook

Yahoo Finance Senior Reporter Brooke DiPalma joins Morning Brief with Julie Hyman to share the latest on earnings for Caterpillar (CAT), Yum Brands (YUM), and Marriott (MAR). To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Morning Brief. Caterpillar, Brooke, that is talking about, uh, tariff effect on its business. Yeah, AI and everything else here. When you think about Caterpillar, of course, that yellow and black iconic behind the bulldozers, behind construction, you see that stock under pressure in early hours, extended hours here this morning. And what we heard in the presentation that Caterpillar put on their investor website is that tariffs are expected to net incremental tariffs are around 1.3 billion to 1.5 billion. That's expected to hit the company this year. They said that that includes as much as 500 million this upcoming quarter alone. And this is a stock that has been under pressure as we continue to make way into the year as we try to understand what exactly these tariffs mean for these manufacturing companies. The company also did say that those tariffs, they drove up manufacturing costs for the company. That hit profit even as sales volumes remained steady. So it's clearly we're seeing some of the tariff impact show up for these companies. And now keep in mind after that extended deadline, the CEO saying on the call this morning that this is expected to now hit the company come August 7th when that deadline shows up. And, and then, Brooke, also on the earnings front, I know you're watching everything consumer, as you do, uh, what are we hearing on that front in terms of earnings this morning? Yeah, internationally, the consumer does well, but here in the US we're seeing a softening and that was reiterated this morning with both Yum Brands as well as Marriott. This international growth offsetting a slowdown here in the US. And taking a closer look at the US same-store sales growth for Yum Brands, what we saw was an ongoing continuation of Taco Bell really outperforming its peers, KFC and Pizza Hut. What we saw there was Taco Bell was the only sore, uh, only segment of the Yum Brands, uh, business that saw same-store sales up. And then we saw a decline of 5% from both Pizza Hut, as well as KFC here in the US, especially as they really try to drum up excitement. We know that KFC is falling behind the competition when it comes to the chicken business, when it comes to, you know, up and coming competitors as well, like Dave's Hot Chicken among others. And what we saw is in from Marriott International, that they actually cut their full year forecast for revenue growth and profit. They cited a slowdown in demand for travel here in the US, but once again international, they did say that that offset some of the slowdown that we're seeing here.

The Biggest Takeaways From Palantir's Aug. 4 Earnings Report

Key Points Palantir's revenue crossed $1 billion for the first time in company history. Palantir's U.S. commercial segment is its fastest-growing segment. Palantir's stock is trading at historically high levels. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) has been the highest-performing stock over the past 12 months, and there isn't even a close second. Its stock is up around 550% -- more than 30 times the S&P 500's gains in that span. Much of Palantir's recent stock price success can be attributed to the artificial intelligence (AI) boom that consumed the stock market and business world over the past couple of years. On Aug. 4, Palantir reported its second-quarter earnings, with the results causing an after-hours 4.5% jump. Below are the biggest takeaways from its earnings report. Palantir's commercial business is picking up steam Palantir is a software company that builds tools that make analyzing and gaining insight from large and complicated data sets much easier. Historically, its software has been geared toward governments, holding large contracts with U.S. government agencies like the CIA and the Department of Defense. However, with the introduction of its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), Palantir's commercial business has been growing at a much faster pace and is gaining ground in its government segment. In Q2, Palantir's U.S. commercial revenue grew 93% year over year to $306 million, while its U.S. government revenue grew 53% year over year to $426 million. This performance helped the company achieve its first-ever $1 billion quarter. Palantir is progressively closing larger deals Palantir isn't a consumer-facing business like other big tech companies like Microsoft, Alphabet, and Apple. The focus on institutional clients means it routinely closes multiyear six- and seven-figure deals. Below is how many large-value deals Palantir has closed in Q2 2024, Q1 2025, and Q2 2025. Deal Value Q2 2024 Q1 2025 Q2 2025 At least $1 million 96 139 157 At least $5 million 33 51 66 At least $10 million 27 31 42 Data source: Palantir. The above represent deals from all of Palantir's segments, but it's worth noting that its U.S. commercial deals of at least $1 million doubled from Q2 2024, and U.S. commercial deals of at least $5 million increased fivefold. Being able to close these large deals is critical to Palantir's business because companies don't simply buy the software and put it to use; Palantir's tools are deeply ingrained in these institutions' operations. Palantir is increasing its margins at an impressive pace A company's operating income is its profit from its core operations. In Q2, Palantir's adjusted operating income was $464 million, up from $254 million in Q2 2024. Adjusted operating income typically excludes expenses like one-time charges and stock-based compensation (a huge expense for Palantir), which is why it's higher than Palantir's operating income under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). What's arguably more impressive about Palantir's adjusted operating income growth is that it has been able to expand its margins while simultaneously making investments to grow AIP and its other U.S. operations. Below are its margins from the past five quarters: Q2 2025: 46% Q1 2025: 44% Q4 2024: 45% Q3 2024: 38% Q2 2024: 37% Investors shouldn't ignore the company's high valuation With Palantir's recent stock price explosion has come a valuation that is well beyond "expensive" by even the most relaxed of standards. As of its Q2 earnings report, the stock is trading at a jaw-dropping 287 times its forward earnings. There's expensive, and then there's that. This high valuation doesn't mean that investors should steer clear of the stock, but it does mean the stock has a bright yellow caution sign attached to it. Historically, even companies that traded at high levels -- but much cheaper than Palantir -- have experienced sharp pullbacks. Of course, past events aren't guaranteed to repeat for Palantir, but it's not far-fetched to think the company could fail to meet up to its lofty expectations at any point.
