Lesley Garrett cast in Northern Ireland Opera's Follies after cancer surgery

Classical singer Lesley Garrett has joined the Northern Ireland Opera's revival of Follies, after her cancer surgery.
Garrett will play Heidi Schiller in Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's musical about a group of former showgirls, at the Grand Opera House in Belfast in the autumn.
The British soprano said on ITV's This Morning earlier this month that she had cancer surgery after being diagnosed with thymoma, a rare cancer of the thymus gland, which could have affected her singing.
Since the surgery to remove the tumour, she has made a successful recovery and will now be joining the Follies cast.
Garrett said: "I'm so excited to be coming back to Belfast and especially to be making my debut with Northern Ireland Opera at the age of 70.
"Sondheim's Follies is a masterpiece and I'm delighted to have been given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform the iconic role of Heidi Schiller."

The production marks the singer's 45th anniversary in the industry and her debut with the Northern Ireland Opera, where she will play the "opera diva" of the Weismann's Follies.
Set in 1971, the musical follows the group as they return to their former Broadway stage at Weisman Theatre, for a final reunion show before its scheduled demolition.
Jazz singer Jacqueline Dankworth, who was in the original cast of the West End debut for Sondheim's Into The Woods in 1990, will join the cast as Carlotta Campion.
West End stars Anna-Jane Casey and Annette McLaughlin will play former room mates Sally Plummer and Phyllis Stone.
The production is directed by Cameron Menzies, with Greg Arrowsmith as the musical director.
The musical scored seven Tony awards at the 1972 ceremony and is best known for its songs Broadway Baby, I'm Still Here and Losing My Mind.

'I'm only making digs about it because I don't hear anything else now other than golf,' Emma explains. 'I walk into the living room and it's on the telly. The kids walk in, sigh and then they walk back out again.' It probably doesn't help that Matt initially wanted to get into golf as he thought it would be a nice hobby for them both. Unfortunately for Matt, when he bought her golf lessons for Christmas, Emma wasn't interested, forcing him to go alone. It's worth noting that Emma has her own hobby (or dream) that reportedly has him rolling his eyes. 'I knew Prince Andrew - the explosive new claims fit my impression of his arrogance'
Prince Andrew is the centre of a new biography that makes fresh claims of his behaviour towards staff and obsession with status - and now a royal expert has weighed in on the allegations As Prince Andrew faces a slew of allegations about his behaviour in a new biography, someone who knew him has confirmed that the portrayal of the royal as 'arrogant, pompous, and obsessed' is accurate. The book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the Yorks, by Andrew Lownie includes claims about Andrew's relationship with Sarah Ferguson, and his supposed rants at staff members. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror that Andrew is 'the problem that won't go away' for the royal family. She said: "Every few months now, there seem to be new allegations about Prince Andrew and lurid stories about his behaviour over the years.' She went on to explain that summer is usually a period of calm for the royals - something which will have been disrupted by the release of the biography. Bond said: "I'm sure the book will have infuriated Andrew. I have to say, though, that from my own experience of meeting the Duke and my conversations with many people who have known him or worked with him over the years, there is a distinct ring of truth about his portrayal in this book. Arrogant, pompous and obsessed with status was my abiding impression of him." The book also claimed that Ferguson lived a life of 'opulent excess' which included wild spending on staff, holidays, and parties. The Mirror contacted the Duke and Duchess of York for comment. While the King is likely to be exasperated by having to read about Andrew's 'shenanigans', Bond said that we should not expect any retaliation as the pair are still brothers. She said: 'I suspect the King will just roll his eyes, probably swear about Andrew under his breath — but then get on with more important things in life.' Lownie's book is more than 450 pages long and is said to have taken four years to research. He explained on Good Morning Britain that he started writing the biography after the infamous Newsnight interview in which Andrew discussed his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. The historian explained: 'The thing with Andrew is you can't believe a word he says.' Lownie also said that Andrew "lost his protector" when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died, and that if he were to advise him on communications, he would suggest to Andrew to "keep a low profile" and "try to win back the respect of the British people". Discussing the title of his book, Lownie said that Andrew was "spoilt as a child" and was never set "any boundaries", which meant that he was always allowed to get away with his behaviour.

The investigation by Lesley states that Freddie kept private journals and notebooks in which he recorded his life story and innermost thoughts, and documented his relationship with his daughter over a period of 14 years. It comes as the biography has already received backlash ahead of its release. The woman, who is known as B, has claimed that she was raised by another family but had always known that the performer was her father, revealing he visited her often before his untimely death in 1991. Reportedly only the Queen members, Freddie's family and his long term partner Mary Austin were aware of his secret love child. Before Love, Freddie is published next month, B has spoken about her late dad for the first time. She confessed to MailOnline: 'I didn't want to share my dad with the whole world. After his death, I had to learn to live with the attacks against him, the misrepresentations of him, and with the feeling that my Dad now belonged to everyone. 'I cried and mourned my Dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie. When you are 15 years old it's not easy." The book will feature excerpts from Freddie's private journals and notebooks that B personally handed to Lesley-Ann. According to B, this will be the first and only time that Freddie's true life story will have been told by his own flesh and blood. Lesley-Ann learned about the personal documents when B tracked her down and contacted her. The two women developed a friendship over several years, which culminated in B granting Lesley-Ann permission to share the contents of the journals, as well as her own memories of Freddie in the biography. The British author has revealed that being raised by her step-dad, B knew from toddler age that Freddie was her father. In her family home, the singer even had a room in their house, in order to spend as much quality time with her as possible. While the legend was on tour around the world with his band Queen or penning new tracks in the recording studio, Freddie made sure he would call B everyday. As well as the book, Channel 5 have also commissioned Freddie Mercury: A Secret Daughter, which will air as a 90-minute special and coincide with the book's release. The feature will explore the 'warm and loving relationship' the Bohemian Rhapsody singer had with his alleged secret daughter, as well as delve into his early childhood in Zanzibar and incredible life as a rock star. Freddie died at the age of 45 back in 1991, with his cause of death being from bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS.
