Gold demand: Gold ETF inflows hit 5-month high at Rs 2,081 crore in June; investor rush lifts AUM close to Rs 65,000 crore

Investor appetite for gold-backed mutual funds surged in June, with Gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) attracting net inflows of Rs 2,081 crore, the highest in five months, amid resilient
gold prices
, market volatility, and geopolitical tensions.
According to data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi), the June inflows mark a sharp jump from Rs 292 crore in May and reverse the outflow trend seen in March and April. Overall, the category has clocked over Rs 8,000 crore in net inflows in the first half of 2025, PTI reported.
The strong inflows pushed the segment's assets under management (AUM) up by nearly 4% to Rs 64,777 crore in June from Rs 62,453 crore in May.
'The robust inflows in June indicate a decisive shift in sentiment, likely supported by resilient gold prices, geopolitical uncertainties, and volatility in equity and fixed income markets, which have revived gold's appeal as a safe-haven asset,' said Nehal Meshram, Senior Analyst – Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India.
Investor interest also reflected in rising folio counts, which rose by 2.85 lakh to 76.54 lakh in June from 73.69 lakh in May, indicating growing retail participation in the gold ETF space.

Two new gold ETF schemes were launched during the month, collectively mobilising Rs 41 crore. While modest in value, Meshram said the new launches 'add to the broader recovery in flows and reflect steady investor interest in the asset class.'
Gold ETFs are passive investment vehicles that track domestic physical gold prices and are backed by physical gold of high purity. Each unit typically represents 1 gram of gold, offering a hybrid of gold investment safety and stock-like liquidity.

Duty cuts on UK goods may aid firms more than buyers

Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal and his British counterpart Jonathan Reynold during the signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), in the UK. NEW DELHI: Government has agreed to cut tariffs on thousands of products imported from UK - from chocolates and cosmetics to cars, silver and Scotch - but reduction and elimination of customs duties will not translate into the entire benefit being passed on to consumers. To begin with, customs duty is only the basic cost of the landed price for an Indian seller. On top of that are local levies - GST or excise - which even an Indian manufacturer has to pay. And, this can be a significant portion of the final price. Take the case of alcohol, for instance, where the landed price of a bottle of the popular Johnnie Walker Black Label is estimated at around Rs 350, which at 150% customs duty sees a levy of Rs 525. On top of that, there is a 200% margin for the importer, the company, in most cases - which means an addition of around Rs 750 - taking the landed price to Rs 1,275. Then comes excise of 85% or Rs 1,084 and VAT of 25% (Rs 590), taking the wholesale price to Rs 2,950. Then comes the retail margin, pushing the cost in a market like Delhi to over Rs 3,000 a bottle. The actual price reduction for a customer will only be Rs 200-300 a bottle, a top industry executive told TOI while predicting a higher margin for companies. That's especially true for Made-in-India whisky, which blend anywhere between 1% and 25-30% Scotch imported in bulk form. "Going forward, for several MNCs operating in India, bottling in India may not be a great idea and they will simply import bottles of blended whisky," the source said. A similar situation is likely to play out in other sectors such as cosmetics too, where companies will see improved margins, said marketing executives. There is no mechanism for govt to ensure the full benefit is passed on. Although it tried to ensure the window is no longer available under GST and in any case, companies dragged authorities to court, questioning the calculations. In segments such as automobiles, competition from players will drive pricing behaviour, as will other trade agreements. For instance, with the EU deal in the pipeline, a German carmaker or Tesla may just lower domestic prices significantly to grab a bigger pie of the market. With duty reduction in several segments staggered over 10 years, price cuts are not on the immediate horizon. Pharma, medical device sectors receive right prescription

This is a representative AI image The India-UK FTA is expected to strengthen supply chains for pharma and medical devices sectors, improve access to affordable medicines, and pave the way for collaboration in bulk drugs and joint research. The domestic pharma industry is hopeful exports of generic drugs to UK - currently valued at around $1 billion - will see a boost. Sudarshan Jain, secretary general, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, said the pact offers opportunities to supply affordable and quality-assured medicines, contributing to better patient care in the UK. Namit Joshi, chairman of Pharmexcil, added the agreement paves the way for partnerships in bulk drug imports, CDMO, and joint research, strengthening India's competitive edge. The medical devices industry also expects bilateral trade to accelerate. "Earlier, devices imported into UK were duty-free, so tariffs weren't a concern. But regulatory approval costs & timelines were. We had sought UK recognition of Indian CDSCO or QCI certifications to fast-track approvals," said Rajiv Nath, forum coordinator, AiMeD. He highlighted need for stricter Rules of Origin checks to prevent misuse of FTA. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . India-UAE non-oil trade poised to hit $100B investments by 2030: UAE's economy minister

Hyderabad: Thanks to the significant boost provided by the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to the economic relationship between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), bilateral non-oil trade is expected to surpass $100 billion annually by 2030, UAE's Minister of Economy and Tourism, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, told TOI here on Thursday. He said UAE is India's third-largest trading partner globally, and UAE companies are increasingly looking to invest in India not just in sectors such as food processing, infrastructure, and retail, but also in areas such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, waste management and circularity, data centres, defence and space, fintech, and tourism, among others. Speaking on the sidelines of the UAE govt's Investopia conclave here, the minister pointed out that by the end of Sept 2023, UAE's direct investments in India reached nearly $17 billion, positioning the UAE as India's seventh-largest global investor. Indian investments in the UAE amounted to $8 billion, making India the second-largest investor globally in the UAE. The minister said that CEPA led to a remarkable surge in trade, with bilateral non-oil trade reaching $65 billion in 2024, marking a 19.7% year-on-year increase. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo This, he pointed out, is more than double the trade level of $27.9 billion in 2020, prior to the CEPA agreement. The current bilateral trade spans several high-growth sectors, including precious metals, machinery, agritech, iron and steel, and aluminium. "A lot of investments are coming. A lot of trade is coming. The B2B relationship is really pushing the partnership and CEPA to the next level. Our relationship with India is very strategic, which is why of the 15 Investopia events we have done globally, five have been held in India. But now the focus is on deepening the relationship to the state level, which is why we conducted it in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh this time," he explained.
