'F1' marks debut of first IMAX theater in Daytona Beach

Yahoo28-06-2025
When 'F1: The Movie' opens this weekend at CMX Cinemas Daytona Luxury 12 at One Daytona, the Formula 1 action movie that was partly filmed in Daytona Beach will mark a new addition at the multiplex movie theater.
'F1' will be the first film to be displayed on a new state-of-the-art IMAX screen, the first commercial movie theater in Volusia County to offer that popular trademarked technology.
According to a company announcement, the new theater is equipped with IMAX with Laser, IMAX's most advanced theater experience.
The system is heralded for its crystal clear, lifelike images and precision audio generated by a 4K laser projection system that features a new optical engine, custom designed lenses and technology that delivers brighter images with increased resolution, deeper contrast and widest range of colors.
Although the CMX Cinemas Daytona Luxury 12 is the only theater in Volusia County to offer IMAX, at least two other theaters offer other enhanced technology systems:
Regal Pavilion in Port Orange offers RPX, which stands for Regal Premium Experience. It's a proprietary premium large-format system that enhances the movie-watching experience with larger screens, superior sound systems and comfortable, premium seating.
In Deltona, Epic Theatres of West Volusia offers Epic XL, its own premium large-format auditoriums designed for a more immersive movie-watching experience, featuring larger screens, enhanced sound systems and upgraded seating.
The same technology also is available at Epic Theatres of Palm Coast in Flagler County.
Here's a look at the history and technology of IMAX.
In its broadest definition, IMAX is a theatrical distribution platform that utilizes proprietary technology to create a more immersive cinematic experience for movie-goers.
The platform includes IMAX cameras, special film formats, dual projector systems, stadium theater seats and larger theater screens.
Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, William C. Shaw, and Robert Kerr invented the IMAX projection system in Montreal in the 1960s, according to information on the technology published by the Toronto Film School.
Ferguson produced and shot one of the early IMAX films, 'North of Superior.'
The first IMAX film was called 'Tiger Child.' It was a short documentary film written and directed by Canadian Donald Brittain. Filming took place in 10 countries and the film's world premiere was held at EXPO '70 in Osaka, Japan.
The film attracted more than 64 million visitors in a nine-month period.
In the beginning, the company was known as the Multi-Screen Corporation. Today, IMAX is headquartered in New York, Toronto and Los Angeles, with additional offices in London, Dublin, Tokyo, and Shanghai.

Today, IMAX auditoriums primarily use the IMAX with Laser system. The projector houses a state-of-the-art 4K laser projection system with a new optical engine and customized lenses, according to information posted by the Toronto Film School.
In its piece, the Toronto Film School interviewed Adam Cuthbert, director of technical services for IMAX. In that role, he oversees a global team that maintains and enhances IMAX systems that encompass 1,000 IMAX screens in 89 countries.
'IMAX's locations are designed to immerse you into the movie, with curved screens that fill your field of vision, and customized seating that puts you closer to the action,' Cuthbert said. 'You can expect a system that delivers crystal clear, lifelike images and precision audio. Every element is fully integrated to our precise standards — clearest visuals and precision audio, projection technology, and theatre design — working together to create what is widely acknowledged as the gold standard for the film entertainment experience.'
The Traumpalast Multiplex in Leonberg, Germany holds the title for the world's largest IMAX screen, stretching close to 70 feet high and 125 feet across and weighing 500 pounds. The screen is so large that it has set two Guinness World Records: one for the world's largest permanent IMAX screen and another for the largest permanent cinema screen.
When it comes to audio, IMAX gives it just as much attention as it does the visuals.
'The IMAX Experience is much more than just a big screen,' Cuthbert said. 'On all titles played on our systems, we create a specialized track to take advantage of the unique capabilities of our system.'
These capabilities are possible due to IMAX's proprietary sound processing software that enables dialogue, music and sound effects to be enhanced, making for a film soundtrack that is 'more realistic and impactful,' Cuthbert said.
IMAX theatres also come with a multi-channel sound system, with speaker placements both behind the auditorium screen and around the theatre. Cuthbert says this creates a sound field that 'envelops you from every direction, immersing you right in the action.'

Trump says he loves Sydney Sweeney's jeans ad – after hearing she's a Republican

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said he's a big fan of actress Sydney Sweeney's much-debated jeans ad campaign ‒ after hearing she's a registered Republican. Trump glowed about Sweeney's American Eagle ad after a reporter on Aug. 3 informed the president about new reports that Sweeney is registered as a Republican in Florida. "She's a registered Republican?" Trump said. "Oh, now I love her ad. Is that right? You'd be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That's one I wouldn't have known, but I'm glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic." More: Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle jeans ad sparks controversy: Here's why Over the weekend, Buzzfeed News first reported Sweeney's party affiliation. A person named Sydney B. Sweeney registered as Republican in Monroe County, Florida in June 2024, according to public voting records. Sweeney's middle name is Bernice. USA TODAY was unable to verify whether it's the same Sweeney. Trump, in an Aug. 4 post on Truth Social, his social media app, heaped additional praise on the actress. "Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em Sydney!" Trump said. American Eagle Outfitters' stock jump by 22% after Trump's post. The American Eagle ad campaign featuring the "Euphoria" actress relies on a play on words ‒ "jeans" and "genes"‒ to describe the 27-year-old Sweeney. The slogan: "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans." In one of several videos for the campaign, Sweeney, clad in a denim-on-denim fit, says: "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color." "My jeans are blue," she continues in the ad, with jeans doing double duty as the camera pans across her true blue denim fit and her blue eyes. Critics have said the jeans campaign amounts to a dog whistle for eugenics and a glorification of whiteness. More: White House calls Sydney Sweeney ad outrage 'cancel culture run amok' White House communications director Steven Cheung last week slammed the negative reaction to Sweeney's ad as "cancel culture run amok." "This warped, moronic and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024," Chueng wrote on X July 29, in response to an MSNBC op-ed that said it was "fair" to condemn Sweeney's ad. He added that people are "tired of this" and using a profanity. Trump, in his same Aug. 4 social media post, slammed luxury automobile company Jaguar for its "stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement" that featured men wearing colorful skirts in a new company rebrand. Adrian Mardell, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, stepped down following criticism of the ad and plummeting car sales. "THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER!" Trump said of Jaguar. "The CEO just resigned in disgrace, and the company is in absolute turmoil. Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad." Trump then took a shot at an A-list celebrity: "Woke singer" Taylor Swift ‒ one of the biggest stars in the world ‒ claiming she's "NO LONGER HOT" since he made clear "that I can't stand her (HATE!)." "The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be," Trump said. Contributing: Medora Lee of USA TODAY Reach Joey Garrison on X @joeygarrison. A guide to the Grateful Dead's 2025 Meet-Up at the Movies

The Grateful Dead's annual Meet-Up at the Movies is expanding in honor of the 60th anniversary of the legendary Bay Area band's founding. Traditionally celebrated only one day each year, its 2025 edition — featuring a 4K restoration of the 1977 concert film 'The Grateful Dead Movie' — can be seen in theaters starting Wednesday, Aug. 13, through Sept. 2. What's more, this year's Meet-Up will include IMAX screenings for the first time, Wednesday-Sunday, Aug. 13-17. 'It was the greatest screening I've ever experienced of a film I've seen hundreds of times,' declared David Lemieux, Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager, in a statement after seeing a preview of the film in IMAX. What is Meet-Up at the Movies? It is an annual event in which concert videos and films of the Grateful Dead are screened in movie theaters around the world, allowing Deadheads, as the band's superfans are known, to gather together for a communal experience. This year in the Bay Area, it also serves as a special treat for those who attended this months' anniversary concerts at Golden Gate Park earlier in the month. The first event occurred in the United States on April 20, 2011 — appropriately 4/20, the cannabis holiday — with screenings of 'The Grateful Dead Movie.' What is 'The Grateful Dead Movie'? Though released in 1977, 'The Grateful Dead Movie' was filmed in October 1974 during a five-night run at San Francisco's now-defunct Winterland Ballroom. At the time, they were thought to be the band's final performances, with the Oct. 20 show billed as 'The Last One.' The concerts featured in the film showcase the Dead's Wall of Sound — the sound system designed specifically for the band — that redefined concert audio. The film also includes interviews with band members and crew, as well as a rare portrait of the band's fans and even some animation. The movie had a budget of $600,000 and was directed by the band's frontman, Jerry Garcia, and documentarian Leon Gast. It opened in theaters on June 1, 1977. In addition to the first Meet-Up, 'The Grateful Dead Movie' was screened at the 2017 event. It has since been restored in 4K with remastered sound. Where can I see it in IMAX? 'The Grateful Dead Movie' will be available to watch on several IMAX screens across the Bay Area, including the traditional large IMAX screens at the AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco and the Regal Hacienda Crossings in Dublin. Is it only showing in IMAX? What else will be screened? 'China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider,' a bonus live performance from the Winterland shows not included in the official film release, will make its theatrical premiere after 'The Grateful Dead Movie.' How can I get tickets? Will there be merchandise? Of course! Many theaters will offer hats, T-shirts, hoodies, posters, etc. How can I keep the party going? Last October, the band released 83 minutes of additional footage that didn't make it into its final cut on its YouTube channel. The bonus material, previously included in a 2004 DVD release, has been remastered in HD and includes performances of 'Uncle John's Band,' 'Sugaree' and a handful of extended numbers.

Tired wife asks husband to shop for bedroom TV — she was shocked at what he came home with: ‘You left a man unsupervised'

When one wife gave her husband the task of picking out their bedroom TV — she was thinking slim and chic. He was thinking IMAX. 'I left my husband in charge of picking the TV for our master bedroom because I was tired of making decisions,' Lauryn Windham Franks wrote in a TikTok video that's racked up over 9.9 million views since July 22. 'I was thinking more of a pretty frame TV.' Instead, the Texas couple — who are currently doing renovations in their home — ended up with a 98-inch monster that could double as a drive-in theater. @laurynfranks I was thinking more of a pretty frame tv but okay… ♬ original sound – Lauryn Windham Franks 'I truthfully didn't care what he bought — just like he didn't care what kind of furniture I bought,' she told Newsweek. TikTok viewers had thoughts — and plenty of them. 'Not y'all having a Jumbotron in your primary bedroom,' one person cracked. 'Did he perhaps buy this from a Buffalo Wild Wings?' joked a commenter. Others proudly defended his purchase. 'There's plenty of wall space left he could have taken up. He showed restraint.' 'Like sir, this is not a theater, people sleep here,' pointed out someone else. But one user saw the long game: 'Now he has doomed you to hosting family movie nights in your bedroom.' And then there was the obvious lesson: 'To be fair, you left a man unsupervised to purchase a tv.' Of course, this isn't the first time the internet's been split over what happens when wives let husbands make home decisions. Turns out, letting husbands call the home-design shots has divided the internet before — and the verdict's never unanimous. Azeemud/ – Laura Marie thought she was sharing a lighthearted anecdote about her son's and husband's bachelor-style behavior while she was out of town — and instead sparked a digital donnybrook. 'I left my son at home with my husband for two days, and the first thing my son said to me when I came home was, 'Can I have sheets on my bed again?'' she tweeted. She followed up, noting, 'THE CLEAN SHEETS WERE IN THE DRYER WHEN I LEFT!' Cue the outrage. 'This is one of those things you shouldn't post about your husband on the internet. This is why men do not want to be married anymore,' one scolded. Another wondered, 'I almost don't believe these stories!! Don't men use bed sheets on them?!' The original poster clapped back: 'I handle laundry and my husband handles groceries. We share cooking and cleaning. And to be honest, I don't know that my husband cares how clean his sheets are.' And, for the record, she's not exactly in a loveless household. 'My husband and I are madly in love. We celebrate 20 years of marriage in August,' she wrote. So whether it's bedding or a behemoth flatscreen, the moral of the story seems clear: leave a man unsupervised in the home decor department, and you'd better be prepared to live with the results — in 4K.
