Snow White's sleepy start at US box office buoyed by Republican voters

The Guardian24-03-2025

Dogged by politically inspired controversy for months, Disney's new version of Snow White recorded a disappointing $43m (£33.3m) on its first weekend at the North American box office, the lowest figures to date for one of the studio's recent wave of live-action remakes of its classic animated films. However, despite the stream of criticism over its so-called 'woke' credentials, figures reveal that it is proportionally more successful in 'red' states that vote Republican than those voting Democrat.
Overall, Snow White's figures are well down on what Disney may have hoped for; the previously worst performing remake was the Tim Burton-directed Dumbo, which took $45m on its opening weekend in 2019, and finished with a worldwide box-office take of $353m. In contrast, remade films such as Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King all took over $1bn worldwide.
Snow White's chances of profitability are further hampered by the size of its production budget, a rumoured $270m after extensive reshoots – compared to Dumbo's $170m, Lion King's $260m, and Aladdin's $183m.
However, assumptions that the rows over alterations from the original animation – including casting a part-Hispanic performer, Rachel Zegler, in the title role, replacing dwarf actors with CGI, and downplaying the prince's role in the action – as well as outspoken political statements by Zegler criticising Donald Trump and expressing support for Palestinians, have led to the mediocre results, are not borne out by analysis of US box-office returns. A report in Deadline suggests that ticket sales and attendance overperformed in Republican voting counties in comparison to standard revenue patterns. Because of the preponderance of cinemas in Democrat-supporting urban areas, a family-oriented movie would expect 63% of its sales from 'blue' counties and 37% from 'red'. However, in Snow White's case, the balance was tilted towards Republican counties, which accounted for 40% of ticket sales.
Box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore said in Variety that family audiences were not likely to have paid much attention to the rows, and it was not likely to have been a significant factor. 'In the case of Snow White, kids and families likely just wanted to see a PG film and [were] perhaps unaware of the controversies.'
The film also performed disappointingly in international markets, falling short of its $50m forecast to accumulate $44.3m, after releasing in a swathe of countries including France, China and the UK.
Box-office analyst David A Gross of FranchiseRe told Variety that Disney will be hoping for a long tail and a gradual accumulation of interest. 'It's a soft opening by Disney's historic standard. Success will depend on whether the film plays well for a couple of months like Mufasa recently did.' Mufasa: The Lion King started even more poorly than Snow White, with an opening North American weekend of $35m in December 2024, but went on to gross $718m worldwide.
The same weekend also saw spectacularly bad figures for The Alto Knights, a period gangster film with Robert De Niro in a double role. Costing around $45m to make, The Alto Knights came in sixth, taking $3.2m from 2,800 venues.

Lisa Kudrow says her Friends character Phoebe ‘was so far from who I am'

The 61-year-old from Los Angeles played one of six friends featured in the hit US sitcom which also starred Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt Le Blanc and the late Matthew Perry. Speaking to US actress Parker Posey for Variety's Actors On Actors series, she said: 'It (the series) was fun the whole time, because we had fun, the cast had fun. 'It was like a collaboration with the writers, because they were so great and nice and good. 'But me being Phoebe was so far from who I was as a human being that it was work. 'I needed to justify everything she was saying in my head so that it felt like she meant it and it was real to her. It was a lot of work. 'And I remember like season two or three, and I was just doing it, and went, 'Oh my god, I'm not doing the work. I don't know if this is going as well. I'm not doing the work'. 'I was really fretting over it. And (Matt) LeBlanc went, 'What's the matter with you?'. I said, 'I'm not doing the work that I did. I used to like really work, and he said, 'You're her. You don't have to do it anymore'.' Alongside her role in Friends, Kudrow is known for starring in a number of TV series as well as comedy films Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and The Opposite Of Sex. In 2023 she thanked her late co-star Perry for 'the best 10 years a person gets to have' while filming Friends in a tribute following his death at the age of 54. During their conversation, Posey, who has starred in films including Dazed And Confused and Superman Returns, spoke about one of her more recent roles playing a southern woman called Victoria Ratliff in season three of Mike White's dark comedy, The White Lotus. She said: 'It was such a gift to have this middle-aged woman at this time in my life, in my career, to be the southern woman. 'I was reading Tennessee Williams in junior high and high school and southern writers and all of this. So I was like, I just ate it up.'

Freakier Friday trailer sees Lindsay Lohan and Jamie-Lee Curtis in four-way swap

The sequel to 2003 blockbuster Freaky Friday sees Jamie-Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunite for another body swap, alongside her teen daughter and stepdaughter, who are intent on wreaking havoc Lindsay Lohan and Jamie-Lee Curtis have baffled fans with a chaotic four-way body swap in the new Freakier Friday trailer. Dropped yesterday by Disney, the trailer shows fans what they can expect from the highly anticipated movie when it's released in August - and it's confusing to say the least. Following on from 2003 blockbuster Freaky Friday, which saw a teenage Lindsay Lohan's character Anna embroiled in a dramatic body swap with her mother Tess, played by Jamie-Lee Curtis. A freak accident and a fortune cookie spell saw the battling mother-daughter duo forced to live each others' lives as they get trapped in the others' body. ‌ And 22 years later, the plot is reimagined, but this time it involves two Gen Z teens, who are also at loggerheads. Lindsay's character Anna is about to get married to her partner Eric Davies, played by Manny Jacinto. ‌ But Anna's daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and Eric's teen Lily (Sophia Hammons) are throwing a spanner in the works, with their contempt for their new blended family situation. The new trailer sees chaos ensue, with Harper labelling her new British step-sister "a little demon thing with an obnoxious accent." We then see a glimpse of Anna's bachelorette party, in which she and her mum Tess Coleman have their fortune read by Vanessa Bayer's character. They are told they have another lesson to learn by "walking in each other's paths". The fortune teller says: "Change the hearts you know are wrong, to reach the place where you belong," before Anna and Tess are caught up in yet another body swap. But this time, it's with their warring stepdaughters, with Anna swapping with her own daughter Harper and Tess in Lily's body. In what appears to be a nod to Lindsay's 1998 first big film The Parent Trap, the teens then begin to formulate a plan to break their parents up for good. Chad Michael Murray reprises his role as Anna's first love Jake, who the teens decide she should reunite with to stop the wedding. ‌ To complicate things further, Lindsay's villainous co-star from The Parent Trap, Elaine Hendrix, who played her wicked stepmother Meredith Blake, will also make a cameo. In November 2024, Lindsay discussed her upcoming role reprisal with Jimmy Fallon. The Mean Girls star explained: "It's just been such a labour of love to make happen. Jamie [Lee Curtis] and I... even at the table read, we were just smiling so big that we couldn't... I don't think we were acting well because we were so happy. But the movie's funny - it's really funny." ‌ In September last year, Jamie-Lee Curtis spoke about her reunion with Lindsay after over two decades. She told Extra: "So fun. We just did it this summer… We came together for 42 days and just laughed a lot, cried a lot. "It's a four-way switch… so it was intense. We have these two young beautiful actors with us, so I think you guys are going to love it." She added: "It's joyful, you know, it's a movie that people love and people are going to love this." Freaky Friday was a remake of the 1976 Disney movie, which saw Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris take part in the original body swap. Some diehard fans are asking for another cameo in the upcoming sequel, with one tweeting: "The ONLY cameo I want to see is Jodie OG Freaky Friday GOAT."

Doctor Who's finale infuriated fans – but the next series will fix everything

Doctor Who is in an odd place both in the fictional universe it inhabits and our mundane reality. Last we saw, the tenacious Time Lord Ncuti Gatwa was burning away to reveal the Doctor's new face, and it looked very familiar. For whatever reason, the Last of the Time Lords appeared to have taken on the form of his old companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). Needless to say, this sudden and unexpected transformation has left a lot of fans very curious – and in some cases downright furious – about what's next for the good doctor. Annoyingly, however, the BBC and Russell T Davies have remained tight-lipped on the situation and at the time of writing, there's been no word on the beloved sci-fi series' future or whether Disney is interested in helping finance another run. So what's a Gallifreyan superfan to do then? Well, here at Metro we've gathered our team of dedicated Doctor Who experts – Deputy TB Editor Tom Percival, TV Reporter Asyia Iftikhar, and Senior TV Reporter Rebecca Cooke – and cracked out the crystal ball to predict what's next for the show, both in terms of the story and the thorny world of TV production. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. Don't worry, though, most of us are predicting a happy ending for the Doctor. It might just be me, but it seems painfully obvious where Doctor Who is going next. Regardless of Disney's involvement, I think we're getting at least one more special, and I don't believe that Billie is playing a true incarnation of the Doctor. Instead, it seems far more plausible that she's the Bad Wolf entity borrowing the Doctor's body. Basically, in this imagined special, we'd learn that Rose's consciousness exists in the Time Vortex as Bad Wolf. When 15 poured his regeneration energy into the time vortex to bring back Poppy, part of that consciousness merged with the Doctor. Sadly, it's not a true regeneration, and this new 'Meta-Crisis Rose Doctor' has a limited time until the body finishes 'cooking' and the true 16th Doc emerges. In that time, though, she has all Rose's memories and all the Doctor's abilities, so she decides to track down her Doctor… aka David Tennant. Over the course of a special, we then get 'Rose Doctor' travelling through the Doctor's timeline, running into some familiar faces (old companions and some returning Doctors perhaps?) before one final tear-jerking run-in with the 10th Doctor giving closure on Davies' tenure and the revived Doctor Who series. Basically it's one big happy ending. What happens next depends on whether the BBC wants more Doctor Who or not. But either way, I think it'll end with the Rose Doctor regenerating into the true 16th Doctor. This will either lead to a third season or, if the BBC decides it's done with Who, the regeneration will be left open-ended for some future writer to pick up a decade or so from now. Whatever happens, though, I think it's time for some fresh blood, and that means two things. Drop Russell T Davies and leave the nostalgia for New Who behind. Change is part of the show's DNA, and the refusal to 'regenerate' has been holding the series back. Disney will pull out of the deal, and the show will fall back into the BBC's hands, returning with a 2026 festive special by which time they will have chosen the 16th Doctor proper. In the Christmas special, much like Susan's cameo was teased and never addressed again in season two, Billie Piper will make a fleeting appearance before the show quickly moves on. I believe she won't even last the full episode, and her cameo will be resolved perhaps even in the first 5 to 10 minutes, as the Doctor's regeneration goes wacky due to Rose's energy being in the Time Vortex after the Bad Wolf incident. Billie will then regenerate into thetrue16th Doctor, who will have their introductory adventure. The show will then return in 2027 for a full season three (ideally returning to, at least, the 10-episode structure provided for Jodie Whittaker's era) with a brand new companion. Belinda Chandra, Ruby Sunday, the 15th Doctor, and whoever Billie is portraying will be firmly left in the past – and, like you, I hope and assume there will be a new showrunner. It's fair to say the Billie Piper reveal has not gone down well. Most see it as the Whoniverse putting the brand on life support, where the memories of the good ol' heyday of the Russell reboot are intravenously administered to keep the dwindling fanbase hopeful that our ailing Tardis might pull through. So, if an idea like, say, bringing back a beloved companion and defying show logic by making her a Time Lord were to backfire, how best to style it out? This season gave fans a lot of things on their wishlist: big budget, stellar Doctor, lovable companion, some cracking episodes (Lux, The Well, etc). But still, it seemed the only fans tuning in were the meta superfans we met when the Doctor battled Mr Ring-a-Ding. Let's go out on a limb here and say that Disney won't back out. That Rose is the Sixteenth Doctor. (All the logical predictions have been taken.) In order to get fans back in and keep Disney sweet, we might have a big shake-up on our hands. Huge. Piper is so bonkers and out-there a person to appear in the regeneration, it could upset the time-space continuum enough to usher in the new normal: a Doctor-of-the-week format. More Trending Hear me out. Perhaps Piper is explained away with some timey-wimey nonsense, and perhaps it turns out the mechanics of Time Lord-dom are broken. He/she/they is regenerating every hour of television, to be precise. Which Doctor Who prediction do you think is right? So, for a one-off special season, playing the Doctor will be the new equivalent to hosting Saturday Night Live. Or going on Snack Wars. Or eating some chicken in whichever poultry promotional content you prefer. A rotating cast of 'Doctor Who's who'. The whiff of desperation is already in the air, so why not lean in?
