'Palace's biggest challenge is internal'

BBC News24-04-2025
Like Nottingham Forest versus Manchester City, Crystal Palace against Aston Villa is an FA Cup semi-final of contrasting styles.Palace do not necessarily keep a lot of possession, but they have got the ability to attack at high speed. The Eagles' supporters - and Villa's - do not get the chance to travel to Wembley all the time for big cup matches, so it will be a a huge occasion for both clubs.Up until two or three weeks ago, Palace looked like one of the most solid teams in the Premier League. All of a sudden, they get hit for five - two weeks in a row.So, that has not only cast doubt over how we perceive them from the outside, but there will be players in the team who probably are not as comfortable as they were a fortnight ago. Maybe there are hints of doubt. It is really tough to call, but it might be one of those games dictated by that first goal, because the two styles of play are not that similar. However, the desire and the drive to try to win that game to get in the final is going to be enormous.Palace beat Villa comfortably 4-1 at home in February so they will have a belief that they can go and do it again. They will not fear Unai Emery's side. The biggest challenge is internal because they have never won a major trophy. It is such a big occasion and I think that makes it a really interesting game.Nedum Onuoha was speaking to BBC Sport's Nat Hayward

Gianluigi Donnarumma makes decision over Man Utd move after Man City approach

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has reached an agreement to join Manchester City, according to reports in France. The Italy international says he has been left 'disappointed and disheartened' over the club's decision to sell him before the end of the summer transfer window. PSG have already signed a replacement for Donnarumma, with Lucas Chevalier joining from Lille in a deal worth €40 million (£34.6m) plus €15m (£12.9m) in add-ons. Donnarumma has now been left out of PSG's squad for their Super Cup final against Tottenham on Wednesday night as the 26-year-old attempts to find a new club. Both Manchester United and Manchester City have held talks with Donnarumma's agent, Enzo Raiola, over a possible move to the Premier League this summer. However, L'Equipe reports that Donnarumma has already spoken with Pep Guardiola and has reached a contractual agreement with City's hierarchy. The report adds that City are waiting for Ederson to finalise his move to Turkish side Galatasaray before pressing ahead with an offer to PSG. Donnarumma, whose contract with PSG expires next year, has also been open to joining Manchester United but Ruben Amorim's side have been unable to offload Andre Onana. Speaking before PSG's Super Cup final against Tottenham, Luis Enrique took responsibility for the decision that will see Donnarumma leave the club. 'Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, no doubt, and even better as a person,' Luis Enrique said. 'But this is the life of high-level footballers. I am 100 per cent responsible for this difficult decision. 'If it were easy, anyone would do it, these decisions have to do with the profile of the goalkeeper that my team needs.' Meanwhile, Donnarumma's agent has hit out at PSG over their conduct during negotiations over a new contract for the 26-year-old. 'We are shocked by PSG. There's zero respect by the club after four years together. PSG had made various demands,' Raiola told Sky Sport Italy. More Trending 'In the end, we accepted an offer lower than Gigio's current salary because he wanted to stay. Then they changed the rules, and at that point, we broke off negotiations to meet again after the Champions League final. We met again before the Club World Cup, and they confirmed their willingness to continue. We didn't expect what happened in the last ten days. 'I understand the need to buy a new goalkeeper, but dismissing Gigio after everything he's done for the club is a huge lack of respect that I will assess with my lawyers. 'Beyond the fact that it was the coach who made this decision, he also works for the club, and my lawyers and I want to better understand their position. 'A month ago, we were talking about renewing his contract, it's strange that in a month, the coach changed his mind about Gigio as a player. This is what saddens me the most and makes me think that in the end, it was better not to renew his contract.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Jack Grealish reveals why he signed for Everton

Jack Grealish has joined Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City, with the deal including a £50m buy option for the Toffees. The 29-year-old midfielder chose the No. 18 shirt as a tribute to his idols Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne, both of whom wore the number at Everton. Grealish consulted Wayne Rooney before making the move to Merseyside, expressing his excitement about joining the club. Everton manager David Moyes, who has made Grealish his sixth summer signing, hopes the loan spell will help the player regain his form and return to the England squad. Grealish stated that choosing Everton was an easy decision after being deemed surplus to requirements at Manchester City, having only started one Premier League game in 2025.

Theo Walcott says £68m star should reject Arsenal transfer

Theo Walcott says Eberechi Eze may be wise to ignore interest from Arsenal if he is to guarantee himself a place in England's World Cup squad next summer. Eze capped off an excellent season for Crystal Palace by scoring the winning goal in the side's historic FA Cup triumph over Manchester City at Wembley in May. On Sunday, Eze returned to the stadium and added another piece of silverware to his CV as Oliver Glasner's men overcame Liverpool on penalties to get their hands on the Community Shield. But there has been mounting speculation that Eze could be set for the exit door at Selhurst Park before the new Premier League campaign gets up and running, with both Tottenham and Arsenal credited with a strong interest in recent weeks. The versatile 27-year-old forward is said to be open to the prospect of signing for Spurs, but would reportedly favour a move to the Gunners should the opportunity present itself before the transfer deadline. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. It's understood the England international has a £68million release clause in his contract with Palace, which remains active until Friday. 'I think the big question or the big thing we've got to look at is that it is World Cup year,' ex-Arsenal and England attacker Walcott said when asked about Eze's options on the latest episode of It's Called Soccer. 'As a player, if it's a World Cup year, I'm thinking, 'I'm going to play consistently for Palace this year', so if I'm Eze, for instance, my thought process: obviously Arsenal is a different kind of pressure. 'There is the pressure of them challenging for the title and there's a lot of words being said that Mikel [Arteta] needs to win something this year so being a player that will help the squad, of course he will, he's an absolutely gifted player. 'So he will help the squad, but will he help himself? The good thing thing about Eze's situation is that he can play every week and he has that maverick style that he accepts making and taking those risks. 'I think he's a player that can take those risks at Palace. I don't think he will get that at Arsenal.' Though Walcott is confident Eze would '100 per cent' improve Arsenal, he warned the forward that the 'grass isn't always greener', especially in the lead-up to a potentially career-defining World Cup. 'If he has a good season at Palace, he will go to the World Cup, I'm pretty sure of that… then what other teams will have a look at him after that?' Walcott added. 'If I was Eze, I would probably stay put just because it's World Cup year. 'If it wasn't World Cup year then I would probably move on.' Walcott continued: 'These opportunities might not come again, though, so that's the risk these players have got to take. 'But for me, World Cup year is a big year and I just feel that the grass isn't always greener. 'I love the way Eze plays at Palace at this moment in time and it would look very different at Arsenal. 'He would improve Arsenal, 100 per cent, but I just feel that World Cup year is a big factor for a lot of players this year.' Walcott believes Viktor Gyokeres may prove to be the missing piece of the puzzle for Arsenal following his summer transfer move from Sporting. However, the two-time FA Cup winner would not be surprised to see the Swede start on the substitutes bench for Arsenal's opening match of the season against Manchester United. Asked if Gyokeres is the player that Arsenal have been waiting for, Walcott replied: 'Do you know what? Yeah! 'Forwards think differently. They have that selfish attitude, they want to score goals. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video '[Robin] van Persie was that player. He would create something out of nothing, he'd be in a space, just his instinct, the way he moves on the field, the way he can operate and look after centre-backs. 'When I say that, I mean put them in positions where they don't want to be and create space for someone else. 'When you have someone like Havertz, who I think is a very good footballer by the way and I think he's got a big season ahead and they missed him massively. 'But the dynamic is completely different now. [Bukayo] Saka has someone he can bounce the ball off. My player like that was [Olivier] Giroud and I always loved bouncing the ball off him, one-twos, follow in. 'Giroud was probably an underrated Arsenal forward and that's a similar kind of player that they've got and Giroud was a very good player. 'But Gyokeres is quicker, he's probably stronger, he's not as good looking as Giroud, I've got to say!' More Trending Walcott added: 'I don't know how everyone else feels about this but I feel he [Arteta] may start Havertz at the weekend. 'I'm just looking at the fact you're going to Old Trafford, first game of the season. They've got a new dynamic, a new team and they've [United] had quite a good pre-season. 'I think it will be a very tight game anyway, but Havertz understands Old Trafford, he understands the league. He may play with him. 'I'd like to see Gyokeres play, but I get the impression that Havertz might.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
