May 27 (UPI) -- Trainer Saffie Joseph had a happy Memorial Day weekend at the races, sending two horses to California to win graded stakes and another to a profitable stop in Texas, as top-level racing spread from coast to coast with the unofficial advent of summer.
The international action was, if anything, even more heated with Group 1 and Grade 1 races from Japan to Hong Kong, Ireland, France and Chile, where yet another Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" slot was decided.
After a moment to give silent thanks to those for whom Memorial Day is meant ... we forge on with ...
Classic
Skippylongstocking shipped west for Monday's $200,000 Grade II Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita and made the trip worthwhile with an off-the pace, 3/4-length victory over the locals.
Midnight Mammoth was closest the visitor at the finish and 6 lengths better than third-place finisher Extensive. That wrapped the two-stakes-win day in California for Saffie Joseph Jr.
At Lone Star Park, Instant Replay battled gamely through the stretch to land Monday's $300,000 Texas Derby by 1 length over Itsmybirthday.
Distaff
Seismic Beauty led virtually gate to wire in Sunday's $200,000 Grade II Santa Margarita Stakes at Santa Anita and wasn't challenged through much of the 1 1/8 miles, drawing off to a 5-lengths victory. Her stablemate, odds-on favorite Splendora, settled for second, giving trainer Bob Baffert the exacta.
Dirt Mile
Komorebino Omoide overcame a bad start in Monday's $400,000 Grade III Steve Sexton Mile at Lone Star Park and drew off in the end to win by 2 1/4 lengths.
Sprint
Buccherino dueled to the lead in Monday's $100,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth Park, and then kept at it for a 1-length win over late-running Subrogate.
Blue Light won Monday's $100,000 Speightstown Stakes at Lone Star Park by 1 1/2 lengths.
Filly & Mare Sprint
Two Sharp was too fast for six rivals in Monday's $250,000 Grade III Winning Colors at Churchill Downs. Leading all the way under Junior Alvarado, the 4-year-old Twirling Candy filly romped home first by 3 1/2 lengths.
Two Sharp is emerging as a force in the division. Her 3-year-old campaign netted three wins, including the Grade III Chilukki Stakes, and two seconds from five starts. The Winning Colors was her 2025 debut.
Mystic Lake shot right to the front and controlled things from there in Monday's $100,000 Memorial Day Sprint Stakes at Lone Star Park, and then worked clear to win by 2 lengths for Joseph Jr.
Filly & Mare Turf
Be Your Best was quickly away in Monday's $300,000 Grade I Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita, crossed over from the outside gate to take the lead and wasn't caught. The 5-year-old, Irish-bred mare opened a 4 1/2-length lead in the lane and coasted home first by 2 3/4 lengths over Lady Claypool.
Be Your Best ran 1 1/8 miles on firm turf in 1:46.26. Irad Ortiz Jr. rode that same Joseph Jr.
At Lone Star Park, half of the 10 entries defected from Monday's $200,000 Ouija Board Distaff when the course came up yielding. That left it to Neom Beachto rally from last and draw off late to a 6 1/2-length victory.
Marksman Queen led the way in Saturday's $250,000 Keertana Stakes at Churchill Downs and held on to win by 1/2 length over Dreaming of Mo. Tarneema was third.
On Saturday at Monmouth Park, Spaliday left the gate last of seven, but crossed the finish line first, 2 1/2 lengths in front of Joyful Lass.
Turf
Otago and Highestdistinction both came running late in Saturday's $104,000 Cliff Hanger Stakes at Monmouth Park, with Otago getting the better of the late duel by 1/2 length.
Turf Mile
King of Gosford came after the early leaders at the top of the stretch in Monday's $300,000 Grade I Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita, worked past the last two foes inside the final sixteenth and won by a neck.
Aa 4-year-old, British-bred colt by Zoustar, King of Gosford has six wins, three seconds and a third from 11 starts since reporting for duty with trainer Phil D'Amato in 2024.
Turf Sprint
Clock Tower grabbed the lead in Saturday's $150,000 Paradise Creek Stakes for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct, and then edged clear to win by 1 1/2 lengths.
Usually Wrong rallied five-wide into the stretch in Monday's $100,000 Chamberlain Bridge Stakes at Lone Star Park and was up to win a tight, multihorse finish by 1/2 length. The 4-year-old Lookin At Lucky colt ran 5 furlongs on yielding turf in 56.78 seconds.
Around the world, around the clock
Ireland
Field of Gold coasted home an easy winner in Saturday's Group 1 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh. The Kingman colt rebounded from a narrow defeat in the English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in his previous start.
A day later in the Group 1 Irish 1,000 Guineas, 2024 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Lake Victoria also bounced back from a defeat at Newmarket to score by 2 1/4 lengths over California Dreamer.
Also Tuesday, trainer Aidan O'Brien sent out Los Angeles to win the Group 1 Gold Cup and Albert Einstein to land the Group 3 Marble Hill Stakes.
England
On Saturday at Haydock, Mgheera led home a parade of five long shots in the Group 2 Betfred Temple Stakes. The favorite, Rumstar, finished sixth and Starlust, the 2024 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner, supposedly prepping for Royal Ascot, finished seventh.
Hong Kong
Voyage Bubble completed a rare sweep of Hong Kong's Triple Crown series with a commanding win Sunday in the Group 1 Champions & Chater Cup at Sha Tin Racecourse.
The 6-year-old gelding earlier in the 2024-25 season won the 1,600-meter Stewards' Cup and the 2,000-meter Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup.
His challenge Sunday was to stay the 2,400 meters of the third leg of the series. A massively favorable pace scenario helped him realize his potential as he rallied from off the pace to win by 3 1/2 lengths.
France
Mark down Sosie as the solid favorite for October's Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Fourth in last year's running of the Arc, the now 4-year-old showed he's matured nicely with a 1-length, off-the-pace victory in Sunday's Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp.
The day's co-feature, the Group 1 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier, went the way of Candelari, a 4-year-old Frankel gelding.
Japan
The big question in Sunday's Grade 1 Yushun Himba or Japanese Oaks was which of the 18 fillies would best handle the 2,400 meters -- a new test for all.
The answer was Kamunyak, who used just about every step of that 1 1/2 miles to outfinish the favorite, Arma Veloce, by a head. Visiting jockey Andrasch Starke got his first Japanese Grade 1 win.
Australia
Antino rolled from third-last to an easy victory in Saturday's Group 1 Doomben Cup with a confident mid-race move that saw him slingshot around most of the field into the stretch. He improved to 3-for-3 in 2025.
Pride of Jenni, the reigning Aussie Horse of the Year, faded from the lead to finish 10th, her fifth defeat in her last six races.
South Africa
Eight On Eighteen made it three wins in a row with a popular 3 3/4-length victory over Spumante Dolce in Saturday's Grade 1 Daily News 2000 for 3-year-olds at Greyville in Durban. The Lancaster Bomber colt earlier accounted for the Grade 1 Cape Town Met and the Grade 1 Cape Derby.
Chile
Gran Oriente, a 3-year-old son of Classic Empire, took the lead in the final furlong of Sunday's Group 1 Gran Premio Club Hipico Falabella and held off the late surge of Dia de Otono for a 1-length upset victory.
Gran Oriente earned a "Win and You're In" spot in the Breeders' Cup Mile on the Del Mar turf on Nov. 1.

Junior Pan American Games underway in Paraguay

ASCUNCION, Paraguay, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- The ASU2025 Junior Pan American Games are underway in Paraguay's capital, bringing together about 4,000 athletes from 41 countries for the largest multi-sport event ever held in the country. The competition runs through Aug. 23. Athletes aged 14 to 23 are competing in 28 sports and more than 330 medal events, according to Panam Sports. Core disciplines include athletics, swimming, diving, artistic swimming, gymnastics, cycling, judo, karate, wrestling, taekwondo, rowing, canoeing, sailing, shooting, tennis, table tennis, squash, badminton, weightlifting, triathlon, volleyball and handball. This year's edition adds eight debut sports: open-water swimming, BMX freestyle, golf, shotgun shooting, water skiing and wakeboard, basketball 5×5, field hockey and rugby sevens. Most events are being held at Asunción's Olympic Park, along with venues in Luque, Encarnación and Ypacaraí, many of which were upgraded for the 2022 South American Games. The medal tally began to take shape Sunday, with finals in rowing, shooting and swimming. As of early Monday, Brazil led the tally with 22 medals, followed by Chile and Colombia with 12 and the United States with 10. Host nation Paraguay has its largest-ever delegation with 320 athletes. Brazil, the United States, Colombia, Chile and Argentina are expected to dominate the medal table based on past results. Organizers say the competition also serves as a key qualifier for the 2027 Pan American Games in Barranquilla, Colombia. The Games are streamed live on Panam Sports Channel, with broadcasts by local partners across the Americas. Panam Sports projects a combined in-person and broadcast audience of about 50 million people. Local authorities estimate the event will generate more than $300 million in economic activity through tourism, infrastructure upgrades and services, with more than 5,700 international visitors expected and hotel occupancy rates surpassing 80% in Asunción. Paraguay's Ministry of Sports also announced that more than 8,000 volunteers are assisting with logistics, operations and hospitality, marking the largest volunteer program ever organized for a sporting event in the country. First held in Cali, Colombia, in 2021, the Junior Pan American Games aim to give young athletes a pathway to senior-level competition while fostering regional sports development.

Big weekend for Godolphin on turf points to Breeders' Cup

1 of 5 | El Cordobes wins Saturday's Grade I Sword Dancer at Saratoga, a "Win and You're In" for the Breeders' Cup Turf. Photo by Coglianese Photography, courtesy of NYRA Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Godolphin had a huge weekend on the turf with victories in the Grade I Sword Dancer at Saratoga and the Grosser Preis von Berlin in Germany while some promising 2-year-olds were on display at Del Mar. The Godolphin winners, El Cordobes in New York and Rebel's Romance in Deutschland, easily could be on a collision course. The Sword Dancer was a "Win and You're In" for the Breeders' Cup Turf. Rebel's Romance twice has used a Group 1 win in Germany to warm up for a victory in that same race and is headed back to try for the three-peat. There's lots more. Read on. Turf Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby resumed their winning ways in New York in Saturday's $175,000 Grade I Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga as El Cordobes came with a late rush under Flavien Prat to win by 1/2 length over long shot Rebel Red. Another Godolphin runner, Nations Pride, finished third and the favorite, Far Bridge, weakened late to report sixth. El Cordobes, a 4-year-old Frankel gelding, came to New York from a victory in the Group 2 Kingdom of Bahrain Princess of Wales's Stakes last month at Newmarket. He has risen rapidly through the ranks this year, starting in handicaps in Dubai in January and now holds a "Win and You're In" ticket to the Breeders' Cup Turf. Godolphin and Appleby have won that three of the last four years. "The way he ran there, you'd Almost say he'll keep on improving," said Chris Connett, assistant to winning trainer Charlie Appleby. Fort Washington, last of seven through the first half of the race, rallied through the stretch to win Saturday's Grade I Arlington Million at Colonial Downs by 1/2 length over Grand Sonata. The favorite, Integration, put a head in front during the closing stages but settled for third, another 3/4 length back of the winner. The 2024 Kentucky Derby winner, Mystik Dan, ran well enough in his first start on turf to finish fourth. Winning trainer Shug McGaughey, who's not in the habit of letting his enthusiasm overwhelm him, said of any Breeders' Cup plans, "That's a little ambitious. But we'll kind of see. I mean, it's a nice thought. But it might be a little ambitious." Also: On the Million undercard, Giocoso returned from a three-months break to win Saturday's $500,000 Grade II Secretariat Stakes for 3-year-olds at Colonial Downs by 1 length; and Air Recruit, the odds-on favorite, was just up in time to win Sunday's $100,000 Oceanport Stakes at Monmouth Park by a nose. Filly & Mare Turf Laurelin had no trouble putting her undefeated record on the line while stepping up to graded stakes company for the first time in Saturday's $500,000 Grade II Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks Invitational. Held off the pace by jockey Kendrick Carmouche, the Irish-bred Zarak miss fired like a rocket in the stretch and ran on to win by 1 3/4 lengths, going away. Charlene's Dream jumped right to the front in Saturday's $500,000 Grade II Beverly D at Colonial Downs, turned back a stout challenge from Be Your Best and ran on to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Spanish Eyes. Be Your Best held third. Heredia took the lead right out of the gate in Saturday's $200,000 Grade II Yellow Ribbon at Del Mar and held the advantage through the whole 1 1/16 miles before winning by 2 1/4 lengths over Public Assembly. Ozara rallied from a stalking position to claim Friday's $300,000 Grade II Ballston Spa at Saratoga by 1 1/2 lengths over fellow closer Deep Satin. Ozara, a 4-year-old daughter of Lope de Vega, got 1 1/16 miles on firm turf in 1:39.65 with Dylan Davis up for trainer Miguel Clement. Turf Sprint Witty won Saturday's $150,000 Van Clief Stakes at Colonial Downs; Hollywood Walk took Saturday's $150,000 Andy Guest Stakes for fillies and mares at Colonial Downs; and Spiced Up won Sunday's $175,000 Grade III Mahony Stakes for 3-year-olds at Saratoga. Distaff Impel rallied from mid-pack in Sunday's $200,000 Groupie Doll Stakes at Ellis Park, repelled two challengers and won by a head over Regaled. The odds-on pick, Alpine Princess, was third. Impel, a Juddmonte homebred 4-year-old filly by Quality Road, ran 1 mile in 1:37.63 for jockey Florent Geroux. Filly & Mare Sprint Sturgeon Moon won Sunday's $200,000 Audubon Oaks by 3 lengths over the favorite, Princess Proud. Perhaps coincidentally, the "sturgeon moon" is the full moon occurring in August, which this year fell on Saturday, the day before the race. Juvenile The word clearly was out at Del Mar about Desert Gate. The Omaha Beach colt went to the post at 1-5 odds in Saturday's $150,000 Grade III Best Pal Stakes and justified the faith, jetting away from four rivals to win by 8 3/4 lengths and improving to 2-for-2. "It's nice to see these horses develop like this," said winning trainer Bob Baffert. "We just gotta keep him healthy and sound." Also: Comport, the odds-on favorite, pressed the pace in Sunday's $200,000 Ellis Park Juvenile, took the lead when asked by jockey Tyler Gaffalione and won off by 2 lengths; and Diciassette stalked the pace in Saturday's $75,000 Proud Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park, made a move through the final sixteenth and got home first by 1 length. Juvenile Fillies Himika rather effortlessly justified her odds-on status in Sunday's $150,000 Grade III Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar. The Curlin filly tracked the early pace, responded on cue to jockey Juan Hernandez and drew away to win by 4 1/4 lengths. The Bob Baffert trainee improved to 2-for-2. "She's young, second out and all, but Juan rode her with a lot of confidence," Baffert said. Also: Chopsticks dueled with Kingsolver in the stretch in Sunday's $200,000 Ellis Park Debutante before edging clear of that rival to win by 1 length and Willow Case came with a late rush to post a 27-1 upset win in Saturday's $75,000 Sharp Susan Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Around the world, around the clock Germany Twice, in 2022 and 2024, Rebel's Romance used a win in a German Group 1 as a springboard to victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf. Look out because the Godolphin runner won another German Group 1 Sunday -- the Grosser Preis von Berlin. Can a return to Del Mar be far behind? "Rebel's Romance is a rock star," said winning trainer Charlie Appleby. "We'll see where we go. We were toying with going to the Canadian International and that's something we will take into account, very much working back from the Breeders' Cup again," Appleby said. France Sajir posted an upset win in Sunday's Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, rallying from last with a late effort that denied the odds-on favorite, Lazzat, by 1 3/4 lengths. Woodshauna was third. Sajir, a 4-year-old Make Believe colt trained by Andre Fabre, made it three wins from four starts this season while getting his first Group 1 victory. Ireland Power Blue got the early lead in Saturday's Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh, turned back a challenge from the favorite, True Love, and powered home in the black by 1 1/2 lengths over that one. True Love came to the Phoenix from a win in the Group 2 Railway Stakes, where Power Blue finished third, 5 3/4 lengths back.
