Philippe Coutinho completes permanent move to Brazilian club Vasco da Gama
The Premier League team said in a statement Friday that both clubs have reached a deal for the playmaker to return to his boyhood club on a permanent basis after Coutinho was on loan with the Rio de Janeiro-based side last season.
Coutinho joined Villa in 2022 and made 43 appearances with the team, scoring six goals.
Coutinho started his professional career at Vasco in 2009.
Coutinho's former clubs include Inter Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munch. He joined Barcelona in 2018 from Liverpool for a fee of up to 160 million euros (then $192 million).
He won two Spanish league titles with Barcelona, and a Champions League trophy with Bayern Munich in 2020. Coutinho won the Copa America with Brazil in 2019 and played in the 2018 World Cup.

Chelsea completes signing of winger Gittens from Dortmund
LONDON (AP) — Chelsea completed the signing of English winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund on Saturday for a reported initial fee of 48.5 million pounds ($66 million). The 20-year-old Gittens signed a contract until 2032 and follows in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, another former Manchester City youth player who developed his game at Dortmund. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea from Manchester United. 'It feels great,' Gittens said. 'It's a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea. 'I can't wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It's an amazing feeling.' Gittens joined Dortmund in 2020 shortly after his 16th birthday and scored 12 times in all competitions last season, but was often dropped to the bench after coach Niko Kovac took over in February. Known as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens when he made his Dortmund debut in 2022, the winger announced last year he wanted to be known simply as Jamie Gittens. He said he was following the example of his father, who also uses part of his full surname. Like Chelsea, Dortmund is playing at the Club World Cup in the United States. Playing for more than one team during the tournament isn't allowed under FIFA rules, so Gittens will have to wait for the new English season to make his debut for Chelsea. McLaren boss Zak Brown warns of ‘disaster' for Red Bull if Max Verstappen leaves
SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — McLaren boss Zak Brown says it would be a 'disaster' for Red Bull if four-time reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen were to leave the team. Verstappen has declined to say whether he'll stay with the team for next year amid speculation about a potential move to Mercedes. Brown said Saturday at the British Grand Prix that if the rumors aren't true, then Verstappen, Red Bull or Mercedes should dispel them. 'I don't know, but the fact that no one will definitively commit to where Max is driving clearly indicates something is going on,' Brown told the Associated Press. 'If Max were to leave Red Bull, it would be a disaster for them.' Verstappen's title defense isn't going to plan as he sits third in the standings, 61 points off the lead. He has scored 155 of Red Bull's 162 points. Ahead of Sunday's race in Silverstone, Verstappen said he'd prefer to spend the rest of his F1 career with Red Bull. But he wouldn't comment when asked if he'll remain with the team for 2026 or if he's had contact with Mercedes. 'I always said to the team it would be ideal, and I think they think the same way, to finish off my career in Formula 1 with one team,' Verstappen told broadcasters Thursday. With bat-tossing and flamboyant sixes, Rishabh Pant thrills during England-India cricket test
The bat went one way. The ball went the other. One of the wildest innings in test cricket from India star Rishabh Pant came to a suitably extraordinary end against England at Edgbaston on Saturday. Attempting to pull offspinner Shoaib Bashir for six, Pant miscued his shot while also letting go of his bat, which flew toward midwicket — close to England fielder Brydon Carse. Meanwhile, the ball looped high in the air and into the deep on the offside where it was caught by Ben Duckett. Carse collected the bat and returned it to Pant, who walked off to an ovation after an incident-packed knock of 63 off 58 balls just after lunch on Day 4 of the second test in Birmingham. 'An extraordinary innings,' said former England captain Mike Atherton, who was calling the match for British broadcaster Sky Sports. 'And it was an extraordinary end.' Pant, one of the most flamboyant batters in world cricket, brought the kind of chaos rarely seen in the often-sedate test format in an innings containing eight fours and three sixes. Off just his fourth ball faced, Pant advanced down the track and smashed England pacer Josh Tongue for a straight six. There was a flick for another maximum off his hips and a shovel shot over the field for four that ended with Pant rolling on the ground in the crease. He was also dropped twice — by Zak Crawley and Chris Woakes — either side of his first bat-throwing episode just before lunch when, on 41, he went for a pull shot, missed the ball and released his bat.
