Border Patrol's pizza box ads spark backlash at local restaurant

USA Today13-07-2025
Pizza boxes have been known to advertise movies, TV shows and athletic competitions. But this time, employees at a pizza shop in Georgia got something particularly unique.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has recently confirmed a marketing campaign involving graphic pizza boxes encouraging those interested to join the Border Patrol with a QR code linking to their careers page — but some small businesses receiving the boxes aren't exactly on board with it.
One such operation is Mojo Pizza N'Pub in Decatur, Georgia, just north of Atlanta.
Why did Border Patrol advertise with pizza boxes?
CBP issued a statement last week saying they work with the MarCom Group in Virginia to support their marketing and advertising efforts. As part of their recent recruitment efforts, MarCom initiated a campaign in Atlanta to coincide with the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference, an annual week-long event that includes trade shows, workshops and seminars related to career and technical education. The campaign included advertising at the airport and on said pizza boxes.

Where are the Border Patrol's pizza boxes?
We are awaiting word back from MarCom Group as to how many pizzerias received these boxes, but the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has so far confirmed that Mojo Pizza N'Pub is one of the restaurants that have received them.
What happened?
The restaurant's prep cook, Chad Dumas, said he got a call offering pizza boxes for free without realizing what they would be promoting. When 100 of these boxes showed up, the staff was not pleased.
"I don't want it in my restaurant that I work for," Dumas said. "I live in one of the most liberal cities in Atlanta... I don't want that to go out. It's propaganda."
The staff reportedly burned all but a few boxes at an employee's nearby home.

7 Metro Detroit Restaurant and Bar Closures For June and July

is the Associate Editor for Eater's Midwest region, and has been covering Chicago's dining scene for over a decade. Summer has brought plenty of new restaurant openings to Metro Detroit, but also a handful of shutters. From a beloved Eastern Market favorite to outposts of popular restaurants like the Balkan House and Anita's Kitchen, the following is a list of spots that have recently said goodbye or plan to close in the coming months. The Shutter, a regular roundup of Detroit and metro Detroit's restaurant closures, is your resource to find out what's on its way out. The list is by no means comprehensive. Have information on another closing? Send all tips to detroit@ July EASTERN MARKET — The end is near for beloved Eastern Market institution Rocky Peanut Co. The store announced in an Instagram post that it will close, 'With no exact date, but timeline by October 2025.' Rocky's opened a retail location in Eastern Market in 1971 and moved into its current space in 1981. That building is now also for sale along with shelves, carts, and other fixtures. In a message to the Free Press, owner Patricia Russo says it's the 'right time to step back' and enjoy retirement. Rocky Peanut Co. is popular for selling nuts, candies, dried fruits, spices, and specialty items. 2489 Russell Street. GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Despite vowing to stay open earlier this year, Pendy's Grosse Pointe closed in July. The restaurant filed for bankruptcy in March, with owner Susan Pendy saying she planned to reorganize finances and continue operating. However, in a farewell post on Facebook, Pendy writes, 'We have had many challenges to overcome and unfortunately, I just can't do it anymore.' Pendy's served seafood, steaks, and classics like shrimp scampi and French onion soup in a country club setting. 20930 Mack Avenue. HAMTRAMCK — Döner kebab specialist the Balkan House will close its original location in Hamtramck in September. The restaurant has been open since 2019 and offers Eastern European cuisine. Owner Juma Ekic cites multiple factors for the decision, but says the move will allow her to expand hours at the Ferndale location and focus on the food truck side of the business. 3028 Caniff Street. LAKE ORION — Anita's Kitchen announced the sudden closure of its Lake Orion location through a Facebook post in mid-July. The Lebanese fast-casual restaurant thanked customers and wrote, 'An opportunity has presented itself that has allowed us to make a thoughtful business decision that aligns with our long-term goals.' Anita's Kitchen still has restaurants in Ferndale, Downtown Detroit, and Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The menu offers pita sandwiches filled with chicken shawarma, falafel, or gyro; salads; rice bowls; burgers; and smoothies. 45 W. Flint Street. June CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Bar Louie is now down to one Michigan location. The tavern and grill chain closed its outpost at the Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township late last month. This comes after the company shuttered restaurants in Livonia and Auburn Hills and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this past March. The last Bar Louie left in the state resides in Royal Oak. 17460 Hall Road. LIVONIA — The western suburbs lost a longstanding favorite when Corsi's Restaurant closed in late June. The Italian spot had served the Livonia community for almost seven decades and was also an event venue for weddings and banquets. Restaurateur Bernard Webster bought Corsi's and plans to remodel the space, revamp the menu to feature Italian and Southern comfort fare, and reopen as Truth Banquet and Mr. B's Pizza, Ribs and Soul Food. 27910 Seven Mile Road. WESTLAND — Memphis-based chicken chain Gus's has closed in Westland, leaving only one location remaining in Metro Detroit. The restaurant is known for spicy fried chicken, sides like collard greens, baked beans, and mac and cheese, and a variety of pies for dessert. Gus's shuttered a Royal Oak outpost in 2024; the Michigan businesses are operated by local franchisee Schmaltz Hospitality LLC. 35505 Ford Road.

Stellantis to absorb $1.7 billion in tariff costs in 2025

Big Three automaker Stellantis (STLA) updated its first half financials after releasing preliminary figures last week, noting that President Trump's tariffs will cost 1.5 billion euros ($1.73 billion) in 2025. Stellantis did however reinstate financial guidance for the year. Stellantis — which counts brands like Ram, Jeep, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo in its product portfolio — said it revenues in the first half of 2025 to come in at 74.3 billion euros ($86.13 billion), down 13% year over resulting in a net loss of 2.3 billion euros ($2.67 billion). Last year in the same period Stellantis reported 5.6 billion euros ($6.48 billion) in net profit. Stellantis said adjusted operating income (AOI) came in at 500 million euros ($579.6 million), with cash flows from operating activities slipping to a loss of 2.3 billion euros ($2.67 billion). With that said, Stellantis now projects new guidance for the second half of the year and expects to see increased net revenues, low-single digit AOI profitability, and improved industrial free cash flow results. Stellantis said this assumes current tariff and trade rules in place as of July 29, 2025. Stellantis stock was down 4% in the pre-market. "2025 is turning out to be a tough year, but also one of gradual improvement. Signs of progress are evident when comparing H1 2025 to H2 2024, in the form of improved volumes, net revenues, and AOI, despite intensifying external headwinds," new CEO Antonio Filosa said in a statement. Stellantis said last week that it absorbed approximately 300 million euros ($347.77 million) in tariff-related costs as well as loss of planned production in the first half of the year. Two months ago, Stellantis selected Filosa, a 25-year veteran of the company and Americas COO, as its new chief executive. His tenure began on June 23, with interim CEO John Elkann remaining as executive chair. Filosa has his hands full repairing the Stellantis business. For the second quarter, Stellantis said global deliveries fell to 1.447 million units from 1.537 million a year ago, down 6%. Sales tumbled in the US 25%, while the greater European region saw sales drop 6%. Stellantis has been trying to pare bloated inventories in the US with pricing incentives and production cuts, and those measures have helped. But the big question remains, at least in the US, of the effect of auto sector tariffs targeting Canada and Mexico production. Stellantis makes several vehicles in Canada and Mexico, where 25% sector tariffs apply to all imports, in addition to auto parts tariffs. Last quarter, Stellantis idled production at plants in Canada and Mexico as a result of tariffs. Read more: 5 ways to tariff-proof your finances A just-announced US-EU tariff deal could help Stellantis, but issues including unpopular vehicles and existing tariffs for Canadian and Mexican imports will still be a problem. Here's Why Pinterest Is A Must-Have Growth Tool For Small Businesses

Female Small Business Owner In Studio Working On Sketches Or Documents At Desk With Laptop While there has been a lot of attention surrounding Instagram's newfound SEO functionality, and the impact of AI overviews and AI platforms on Google searches, many business owners may have forgotten about the power of Pinterest. Unlike other social media applications, Pinterest's primary purpose is to be a visual search engine. When used as such, it has the potential to profoundly impact your discoverability online and can drive growth for your business. Small business owners can no longer afford to ignore it. Here's why Pinterest is a must-have tool for small businesses. Pinterest Is A Powerful Traffic Driver Organic traffic from Google may be dropping, but traffic from Pinterest could help fill that void. According to research from Adobe, 39% of consumers use Pinterest as a search engine. Furthermore, a whopping 96% of Pinterest searches are unbranded, meaning that users are not looking for a specific brand or company. This presents enormous opportunities for small businesses: you don't need to be a big brand name to get seen on Pinterest, just a consistent content strategy. With a business account, you can create rich pins that are more informational than regular pins, use metadata from your website, and can be optimized with keywords to help your content stand out within search results. Each of these pins is an opportunity to get found online and direct traffic to your website. Men Are A Growth Market On Pinterest Have you historically turned away from Pinterest, thinking it's only for women? Think again. A new report from Pinterest shows that men are a fast-growing demographic, with more than one-third of Pinterest's global audience being men (skewed towards Gen Z and Millennials). They're looking for inspiration on various topics such as wellness, fitness, style, and self-care. If your target audience consists of Gen Z or Millennial men, Pinterest could be an excellent platform to focus on to help drive traffic to your business. Drive Sales With Shoppable Pins eCommerce businesses may miss out on revenue if they're not integrating their catalog with Pinterest's shoppable product pins. These pins give your customers a direct path to purchase - so if they discover your products on the platform, they can buy straight away without going through hoops (and more clicks) to get to your website. 85% of weekly users have made a purchase from pins, so users (also known as 'Pinners') have a high purchase intent. Make sure you create a Pinterest business account to gain access to advanced features like product pins, advertising, and audience analytics. Then you can connect your website and your catalog. Enjoy The Benefits Of Evergreen Content One of the great benefits of Pinterest for businesses is that a pin can continue to generate traffic long after you first posted it. Also known as evergreen content, pins that aren't tied to seasonality or trends have the potential to keep working for you all year round. For busy business owners who don't have time to continuously create new content every day, or jump on board every social media trend, this may offer some relief. Focus on making content-rich pins that will be helpful to your audience at any time of year, such as educational 'how-to' content. The longer a pin stays helpful to your audience, the more clicks and saves it may receive, and in turn, increasing its longevity on the platform. For those looking to grow their business's online presence and increase traffic to a website, pivoting to Pinterest could be a powerful and strategic move.
