Tanzania, Burundi launch construction of $2bln joint SGR project
President Burundi Evariste Ndayishimiye and Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa officially launched the construction of the line from Uvinza in Tanzania to Musongati in Burundi, which will cover 282km and cost $2.154 billion.
This project marks a key step in regional integration and economic development for both countries. Once completed, the line will give Burundi direct access to the Port of Dar es Salaam and enhance export of minerals as well as ease importation of goods.
It aligns with the Central Corridor project, whose main goal is to boost East and Central Africa integration through modern infrastructure, linking landlocked countries such as Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia to the port of Dar es Salaam.
Mr Majaliwa said the project would enhance trade and investment in the region, delivering goods in a single day. It currently takes more than a week to move from the Port of Dar es Salaam to Bujumbura.
Currently, the port of Dar es salaam handles 80 percent of the Central Corridor cargo.
President Ndayishimiye termed it a dream come true, saying the project aligns with his government's Vision 2040-2060.
The railway will be crucial in moving Burundi's nickel, lithium, and cobalt, whose export will generate significant revenues for the economy.
The Uvinza-Musongati railway project is being executed in two phases: The first will stretch 180km connecting Uvinza to Malagarazi in Tanzania and the second will stretch 102km linking Malagarazi to Musongati in Burundi, and later extend to Uvira and Kindu in the DRC.
The Burundi stretch is funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The completion of the railway will see the country move away from road transport, reducing transport time and costs, road accidents and road maintenance costs.
The six-year construction contract was signed in January in Dar es salaam by the government of Burundi and the government of Tanzania represented by ministers of infrastructure; the China Railways Engineering Group Limited (CREGC); and the China Railway Engineering Consulting group Co Ltd (CREDC).

Azizi completes 70% work on Riviera Beachfront I project
UAE-based Azizi Developments has announced that 70 per cent of the work has been completed on its premium Beachfront I project in Riviera, its French Mediterranean-inspired waterfront community in MBR City, Dubai. Oman: 14km coastal road for Duqm Tourism Zone
DUQM: The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) has awarded a contract for the construction of a dual carriage coastal road in the tourism zone of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD). The road will extend 14 kilometers, connecting the tourism area with the fishing port and the fisheries and food industries complex. The project consists of two lanes in each direction and includes four main roundabouts, surface water drainage systems with modern infrastructure, as well as signage, concrete and steel barriers, and service facilities. This comes as part of an integrated plan to develop the transport system within the master plan of the zone. Eng. Ahmed bin Ali Akaak, CEO of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, stated that the coastal road project represents a qualitative addition to the infrastructure of the tourism zone in Duqm, adhering to the highest engineering standards in quality and traffic safety. He added that the project enhances the area's attractiveness for tourism investments and related economic activities. The road will pass through scenic landscapes varying between seashores, natural hills, and future development projects, offering visitors a unique experience and boosting the vitality of the tourism sector. The tourism zone spans around 30 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers directly overlook an 18-kilometer waterfront, while the remaining area lies on nearby highlands, offering distinctive diversity for tourism activities. Work is underway to develop the detailed master plan, ensuring the distribution of tourism activities, defining architectural façade requirements, and establishing artificial development projects that enhance the zone's beauty and capacity to attract domestic and international tourism. The project has strategic significance, directly linking the tourism zone with the fishing port and Duqm Airport. Ghana: Mahama meets Japanese PM; discusses 3 key issues to deepen cooperation
Ghana and Japan have signalled a new push to deepen economic cooperation and accelerate priority infrastructure projects during a bilateral meeting between President John Dramani Mahama and the Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba of Japan on the sidelines of TICAD 9 in Yokohama. President Mahama acknowledged Ghana's central role in Japan's cocoa supply, noting that Ghana accounts for about 70% of Japan's cocoa imports. He encouraged Japanese firms to expand investments in Ghana's cocoa value chain, including a public–private partnership with the Cocoa Processing Company to revamp the plant and boost value addition. The President also highlighted upcoming milestones in Ghana–Japan relations, including the centenary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi's arrival in Ghana and the 50th anniversary of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) in 2027—anniversaries he previously discussed with H.E. Hiroshi Yoshimoto, Japan's Ambassador to Ghana. On infrastructure, President Mahama stressed the strategic importance of the Volivo Bridge over the Volta River, a critical component of Ghana's Eastern Corridor that links Accra and Tema to the north and onward to Burkina Faso and Niger.
