'Most improved by far': Iowa football WR room praised by coaching staff

USA Today4 days ago
The Iowa football wide receivers have long been perceived as one of the weakest position groups for the Hawkeyes.
The Hawkeyes haven't had a 1,000-yard wide receiver in 14 years, and despite having some decent talent in the room, they've yet to put it all together. It's not all on the wide receivers. They've had to deal with bad quarterback play and below-average play calling. But, it's still been a big weakness for the program for almost 15 years now.
Heading into the 2025 season, it seems like optimism within the building is growing for the wide receivers room. While it may not look great on paper, there is talent in the room with graduate Jacob Gill, sophomore Reece Vander Zee, junior Sam Phillips, and senior Seth Anderson. The question is, can they put it all together with a new quarterback in town? And it seems like the Iowa coaching staff believes they can.
Kirk Ferentz and Tim Lester both talked with the Big Ten Network crew when they came to Iowa City for their Iowa season preview show on Monday night. And they both had glowing things to say about the wide receivers heading into 2025.
The comments from Ferentz and Lester are very interesting and provide some different insights into the wide receiver room entering the season.
It's great to hear Lester say that the wide receiver room is the most improved room on the entire roster, but it's the second part of his quote that's the most fascinating. He wants the Iowa offense to be more 50/50 when it comes to rushing and passing, which would be a sharp pivot from the rush-first offense that Hawkeye fans have grown accustomed to under Ferentz. The fact that the wide receivers have taken a big enough step forward for Lester to say that is a good sign for that room.
Ferentz's comments are also important, as he talks about the receivers earning the quarterbacks' trust this offseason. With a new quarterback in the fold in Mark Gronowksi, that's a big deal. The more that Gronowski trusts his receivers to make plays, the more opportunities they're going to get. That could open up more explosive passing plays for an offense that desperately needs it.
While we'll still have to wait and see how the wide receivers play when the season kicks off, it's a really good sign that the coaching staff is super high on them. And who knows, maybe Iowa will have its first 1,000-yard season from a wide receiver since Marvin McNutt. If that happens, it means 2025 was a massive success for the Hawkeyes.

How Wisconsin great Braelon Allen performed in New York Jets' preseason win over Giants

Former Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen delivered a strong performance in the New York Jets' preseason loss to the New York Giants on Saturday. Allen took seven carries for 34 yards (4.9 yards per carry) in the 31-12 defeat. Just like in the team's preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, Allen was more efficient than starter Breece Hall, who rushed for just 26 yards on seven carries. Allen now has 67 rushing yards on 15 carries through two preseason contests, compared to Hall's 35 yards on 10 carries. The former Wisconsin great is unlikely to claim the full-time workload when the 2025 season kicks off, both due to Hall's talent as a pass-catcher and his status as a second-round draft selection. But it's hard to ignore Allen's current trajectory. At the least, he is showing enough production and consistency to begin to carve into Hall's workload. None should be surprised if Allen improves on his 92-carry, 334-yard, two-touchdown rookie season in 2024. He is currently a popular pick for a sophomore breakout, especially as the Jets work to establish an identity under new head coach Aaron Glenn. Is Caitlin Clark playing today? Indiana Fever star's injury status vs. Connecticut Sun

Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark is set to miss her 13th straight regular season game on Sunday as she continues to recuperate a right groin injury. Clark was officially ruled out by the Fever as Indiana (18-16) travels to Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday to take on the Connecticut Sun (6-26). It's now the 22nd regular season game that Clark has missed this season and the 23rd game overall, including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. Fever head coach Stephanie White provided an update on Monday of last week, revealing to reporters that Clark had not yet returned to practice. "No return to practice. She's been able to get a little bit more in her full-court running with all of her body weight. It's really building up from doing minimal to then building some endurance to do longer periods of time. She's been able to do a little bit more on the court in terms of how she moves, but not into practice yet," White said. ESPN broadcaster Ryan Ruocco said during last Tuesday's Fever loss against the Dallas Wings that coach White was hopeful Clark could return to practice this coming week. Ruocco shared some potential Clark return dates, too. "Indiana will play Washington on Friday at home. Then, at Connecticut, who has the worst record in the league, on Sunday. Then, they have a week off before playing Minnesota twice, home Seattle ... "Now, that stretch where they have the week off is where Stephanie White reiterated to us today she's hoping Caitlin Clark returns to practice. Stephanie talked yesterday about how Caitlin has been running more, doing more on-court work. She is hoping that Caitlin returns to practice next week, would need multiple days of practice before she then gets into a game, but you see the way the schedule stacks up after that week and wonder could one of those games against Minnesota or maybe the 26th at home against Seattle be a potential return game," Ruocco said. Fans last saw Clark on the court more than a month ago when she exited in the final minute of the Fever's 85-77 July 15 win over the Sun. Clark missed five regular season games from May 28-June 10 with a left quadriceps injury. Clark missed four more regular season games and the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final with a left groin injury from June 26-July 5. The 6-foot guard also missed the Fever's preseason opener with a left leg injury. Prior to her absences this season, Clark had played in 185 straight games across her college career at Iowa and the start of her WNBA career with the Fever. Limited to 13 games this season, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field-goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy.
