Citizens Advice Denbighshire to launch new project

Rhyl Journal22-05-2025
The North Denbighshire Family Advice Network will focus on helping families in the county by providing accessible and trusted advice via school based advisors.
The 12 month initiative will be funded by the Welsh Government's Child Poverty Innovation and Supporting Communities grant.
The approach will allow Citizens Advice Denbighshire to reach struggling families by providing advice to them at schools in the county.
Advisors will be situated at schools in the north of the county and will provide support on welfare, debt, and housing issues.
Julie Pierce, CEO of Citizens Advice Denbighshire said: "This is a real game-changer in how we reach and support local families
"By meeting people where they already are, in schools, we're removing barriers to access and building stronger, more connected support systems."
The project aims to provide a 'one-stop shop' for struggling families, empowering them and reducing the risk of poverty.
Citizens Advice Denbighshire sees this initiative as a potential blueprint for future service delivery and hopes it will become a sustainable part of its long-term work.

Wrexham MS shares an update on Government funding for region

MS for Wrexham One of the most important parts of my job has always been to help ensure Wrexham receives its fair share of funding. In recent months, there have been some tangible examples of Welsh Government investment making a positive difference, specifically in the city centre. Much of the improvements have come via the Transforming Towns programme, which aims to help communities revitalise their high streets and public spaces, honouring their past and investing in the future. Wrexham has secured more than £10m from this scheme and some examples of where the money has been spent includes the newly refurbished indoor Butchers' and General Markets, which received £2.5m in grant funding. Residents who've visited the city centre recently will have seen the improvements on High Street. The pedestrian-friendly space has enabled the neighbouring bars and restaurants to open international-style areas for people to sit and dine outside. While these are examples of work that has been completed, there are also further projects in the pipeline. In the not-too-distant future, Wrexham's 'Museum of Two Halves' will reopen on Regent Street. The project will see the development of Wales' first ever football museum, alongside the enhanced and expanded Wrexham Museum. The Old Library on Queens Square is also being redeveloped and will become a new creative hub. All of this has been delivered thanks to the Transforming Towns programme and earlier this month, the Welsh Government announced it is allocating an additional £17m to the fund this financial year, resulting in the budget being increased from £40m to £57m. It means even more regeneration projects can take place and I hope Wrexham will once again benefit. In addition to Transforming Towns, extensive conservation work is nearing completion at St Giles Church. Cadw, the Welsh Government's historical environment service, has contributed over £167,000 through its Historic Buildings Capital Grant Programme towards the conservation project. This grant supported masonry repairs to the south aisle and chancel, re-leading the chancel roof, and renewing rainwater goods with adaptations to manage heavy rainfall more efficiently as part of climate change adaptation measures. The project has also supported two apprentices in stone masonry. St Giles is a celebrated landmark and one of the finest examples of religious architecture in Wales. I am pleased this investment will help preserve this wonderful, listed building for future generations. New bus fare scheme will make travel more affordable

From September 1, single journeys will cost just £1 for 16 to 21-year-olds who hold a valid mytravelpass. Day tickets will be capped at £3 on participating routes, allowing young people to access unlimited travel. Ken Skates, cabinet secretary for transport and North Wales, said: "This scheme will make a real difference to young people across Wales, and will allow them to make journeys for work, education and leisure at a discounted price. "I would encourage those who don't yet have a mytravelpass to apply so they can take full advantage of the scheme when it begins on 1 September." The mytravelpass is free and must be shown to the driver as proof of age to access the discounted fare. The pilot scheme is funded by £15 million from the Welsh Government over two financial years, as part of a Budget agreement with Welsh Liberal Democrats leader Jane Dodds. An additional £7 million will be invested to expand the scheme to include five to 15-year-olds. This extension will come into effect from November 3.

The exact date £1 bus fares in Wales will begin

The exact date £1 bus fares in Wales will begin All young people aged between 16 and 21 in Wales will be entitled to discounted bus fares from next month A discounted bus fare scheme for young people will start in September (Image: WalesOnline/Rob Browne) There are just two weeks to go until all young people in Wales aged between 16 and 21 will be able entitled to discounted bus fares. As part of a pilot scheme which begins on September 1, single fares for those in this age group will cost £1 and there will be £3 day tickets available too. ‌ In order to take advantage of the discounted bus fares, young people are being reminded that they need to sign up for a free mytravelpass. In September, the scheme will only be available for those aged between 16 and 21 but it will be extended for younger children in the coming months. ‌ It was previously reported that Welsh Government's pledge to offer all those under the age of 21 bus travel for £1 had not been fully agreed with bus operators before they were announced in the budget, raising concerns that children aged between 11 and 15 could end up paying more for public transport compared to those aged between 16 and 21. ‌ However, the Welsh Government has since announced that it will invest a further £7m to extend the scheme to 5 to 15-year-olds, from November 3. The plans were first announced in February this year as part of the Welsh Government's budget for the 2025-26 financial year. There had been concerns about whether the budget would pass as due to the way the Senedd has been elected, Labour needed support from another Senedd member but a deal with the Senedd's sole Liberal Democrat MS Jane Dodds meant the budget went through.
