DEWA seeks to empower women at the workplace
The Women's Committee of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised a series of field visits to DEWA branches during the second quarter of 2025, interacting with more than 300 female employees from different sectors and locations. These visits underscore DEWA's efforts to empower women in the workplace and enhance communication with female employees. The meetings included interactive panel discussions in which female employees had the opportunity to discuss the committee's plans for the next two years and present suggestions and ideas to help improve their work-life balance, thereby enhancing their contribution to DEWA's organisational and strategic objectives. "At the Women's Committee, we are keen to be close to female employees across various work sites, and to provide an open space for dialogue and the expression of opinions and aspirations, following a participatory approach based on transparency and engagement. This tour is a continuation of the committee's field initiatives, which aim to incorporate feedback and suggestions into actual plans, making female employees true partners in shaping development decisions within DEWA. During the second half of the year, we aim to expand the scope of these programmes through new interactive initiatives that enhance the committee's presence and engagement with all DEWA female employees, in addition to continuing the Edhaa initiative, which highlights inspiring Emirati women across different fields,' said Fatima Mohammed Al Jokar, Chairperson of the DEWA's Women's Committee. Vice Chairperson Aysha Al Asam Almazrouei said the tour reflects the commitment of the committee to involve female employees in decision-making, while also strengthening professional and social ties. "This contributes to creating a flexible work environment that enables women to achieve their ambitions and effectively support DEWA's objectives,' said Almazrouei. The discussion panels witnessed strong engagement from female employees, who expressed their appreciation for the committee's initiatives, which open new horizons for expression and participation, and strengthen their sense of belonging and confidence in the organisational system. The visits also served as an opportunity to explore key challenges and propose development initiatives that will enrich the committee's work plan with more comprehensive themes aligned with the needs of female employees. Recently, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), launched the annual cultural competition for DEWA female employees during his meeting with members of the DEWA Women's Committee. The committee is organising the competition for the fifth consecutive year, in conjunction with International Women's Day. This year's competition is in line with the global hashtag #AccelerateAction, which focuses on the need to strengthen efforts to achieve gender equality and accelerate progress across sectors, as well as raise awareness about the role of women in sustainable development and highlight their achievements at a local and international level. During the meeting, Al Tayer noted that the Emirati model of women's empowerment is globally respected and recognised as an inspiring example of promoting inclusivity in sustainable development. He congratulated DEWA female employees on the occasion of International Women's Day 2025, noting that their dedication and hard work had made them inspiring role models for women in general, and working women in particular. "The pivotal contribution of women in the prosperity and development journey is a natural result of the pioneering approach adopted by the late Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace. "There are 1,939 female employees in DEWA. This includes 579 female employees in administrative and middle-management positions, and many female employees in leadership positions. At DEWA, 37.12 % of management positions are held by female employees, which is one of the highest rates in the world. Notably, most of these positions are occupied by Emirati women,' added Al Tayer. Fatima Al Jokar, Chairperson of DEWA Women's Committee, gave a presentation highlighting DEWA's achievements and activities in the field of women's empowerment in 2024. "We support DEWA's efforts to foster a supportive environment for female employees, enabling them to turn challenges into opportunities and contribute effectively to building the nation and raising future generations. We are committed to appreciating the competencies, capabilities and dedication of DEWA employees, highlighting their role in benefiting society in all its aspects,' said Al Jokar.

Strengthening Digital Ties: NPCI International scales up UPI adoption in the United Arab Emirates
Dubai: NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has detailed its progress in expanding Unified Payments Interface (UPI) acceptance across the UAE and unveiled the next phase of its strategy to deepen the platform's integration. This ongoing effort supports the UAE's vision of a cashless economy while enhancing cross-border payment experiences for the millions of Indians who travel between the two countries each year. UPI, India's real-time, account-to-account payment system, enables instant, secure transactions through mobile applications. Handling over 18 Billion transactions monthly, it has grown into one of the world's leading digital payment infrastructures. An open, interoperable architecture and rigorous security framework allow UPI to adapt smoothly to regulatory environments beyond India, including the UAE. The UAE is one of India's busiest travel and remittance corridors. According to India's Ministry of Tourism over seven million Indians visit the UAE annually, making them its largest group of international visitors. Enabling travellers to pay with the mobile applications they use in India boosts convenience and gives the UAE merchants access to a digital-savvy customer base. The result is greater efficiency, better cash management, and lower operational costs for businesses. His Excellency Satish Kumar Sivan, Consul General of India, Dubai said, 'The experience of Indian diaspora and the Indian travellers to UAE will never be the same again after the complete integration of UPI with UAE's digital payments architecture. I am glad that NIPL is making aggressive, concerted efforts with merchant establishments, payment solution providers and banks in UAE to ensure that this seamless experience is available to Indian clientele at the earliest. The complete integration of digital payments platforms of India's UPI and UAE's AANI will truly revolutionise our bilateral financial transactions ecosystem and will be a feather in the ceremonial cap of firsts that India & UAE have been producing in our economic partnership over the past decade.' Over the past few years, NIPL has laid a solid foundation for UPI in the UAE through collaborations with leading financial institutions and payment solution providers. Partnerships with NeoPay (Mashreq), Network International, and Magnati have enabled QR-based UPI acceptance across a rapidly growing merchant network. Flagship outlets such as Dubai Duty Free and Lulu Hypermarket are already accepting UPI Payments, allowing Indian customers to settle purchases straight from their Indian bank accounts. Mr Ritesh Shukla, MD & CEO, NPCI International said, 'At NPCI International, we are proud to accelerate the adoption of UPI in the UAE, a milestone that not only brings unparalleled convenience to millions of Indian travellers and residents but also strengthens the digital bridge between the two vibrant economies. Our expansion in the UAE is a testament to the growing global confidence in India's digital payment innovations. By enabling seamless, secure, and real-time payments, we are empowering businesses and consumers alike, supporting the UAE's vision of a cashless economy, and setting new standards for cross-border financial connectivity. We remain committed to deepening our partnerships and driving the next wave of digital transformation.' To accelerate adoption, NIPL is working closely with regulator in the UAE and acquirers to enable UPI in high-frequency sectors including retail, hospitality, entertainment, transportation and essential services. The platform supports real-time payments in Indian rupees, shows transparent exchange rates and complies with safeguards such as transaction limits, two-factor authentication and international usage controls issued by the Reserve Bank of India. The Government of Dubai has announced a goal of achieving 90 percent digital transactions by 2026, and aligned with this vision, NIPL is enhancing its presence in the country by expanding UPI acceptance. Through sustained collaboration with the UAE-based partners, the company is committed to delivering seamless, secure digital-payment experiences that generate lasting value for consumers, merchants and the wider economy. About NPCI International: NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) was incorporated on April 3, 2020, as a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). As NPCI's international arm, NIPL is devoted to deploying NPCI's indigenous, successful real-time payment system—Unified Payments Interface (UPI)—and card scheme (RuPay) outside of India. NPCI has successfully developed and proved its products and technological capabilities in the domestic market by transforming the payment segment in India. Currently, there are several countries that seek to establish a real-time payment system or a domestic card scheme. NIPL, with its knowledge and experience, can offer these countries technological assistance through licensing and consulting for building real-time payment systems to meet the rapidly evolving needs of fast-growing global businesses. NIPL focuses on transforming payments across the globe through technology and innovation. It will not only enable payments for Indians but also support other countries by enhancing their payment capabilities using technological assistance, consulting, and infrastructure.

UPI in UAE: Indian travellers may soon use just passports, phone
Indians travelling to the UAE may soon be able to rely solely on their passports without the need to carry cash, multiple cards, or payment instruments, thanks to the rapidly advancing digital payment infrastructure. This was shared by Satish Kumar Sivan, Consul General of India in Dubai. He envisions a future where all key personal finance tools are seamlessly integrated into the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), enabling effortless international transactions. Speaking at an event on Thursday marking the expansion of UPI in the UAE, the envoy stated that the move is part of a broader initiative to simplify cross-border mobility and payment experiences for Indian travellers. 'Everything will be made easy,' he said, referring to the goal of consolidating identity and financial tools digitally. While specific timelines and technical details were not shared he described the concept as a work in progress. The latest announcement builds on NPCI International's efforts to scale UPI acceptance across the UAE. With major retail chains such as Lulu and Dubai Duty Free already onboard, Indian visitors can now use familiar mobile apps to pay directly from their Indian bank accounts. The next phase aims for deeper integration with UAE's local payment system, AANI, further enhancing digital financial connectivity between the two nations.
