DEWA seeks to empower women at the workplace

Gulf Today13-07-2025
The Women's Committee of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised a series of field visits to DEWA branches during the second quarter of 2025, interacting with more than 300 female employees from different sectors and locations. These visits underscore DEWA's efforts to empower women in the workplace and enhance communication with female employees.
The meetings included interactive panel discussions in which female employees had the opportunity to discuss the committee's plans for the next two years and present suggestions and ideas to help improve their work-life balance, thereby enhancing their contribution to DEWA's organisational and strategic objectives.
"At the Women's Committee, we are keen to be close to female employees across various work sites, and to provide an open space for dialogue and the expression of opinions and aspirations, following a participatory approach based on transparency and engagement. This tour is a continuation of the committee's field initiatives, which aim to incorporate feedback and suggestions into actual plans, making female employees true partners in shaping development decisions within DEWA. During the second half of the year, we aim to expand the scope of these programmes through new interactive initiatives that enhance the committee's presence and engagement with all DEWA female employees, in addition to continuing the Edhaa initiative, which highlights inspiring Emirati women across different fields,' said Fatima Mohammed Al Jokar, Chairperson of the DEWA's Women's Committee.
Vice Chairperson Aysha Al Asam Almazrouei said the tour reflects the commitment of the committee to involve female employees in decision-making, while also strengthening professional and social ties.
"This contributes to creating a flexible work environment that enables women to achieve their ambitions and effectively support DEWA's objectives,' said Almazrouei.
The discussion panels witnessed strong engagement from female employees, who expressed their appreciation for the committee's initiatives, which open new horizons for expression and participation, and strengthen their sense of belonging and confidence in the organisational system. The visits also served as an opportunity to explore key challenges and propose development initiatives that will enrich the committee's work plan with more comprehensive themes aligned with the needs of female employees.
Recently, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), launched the annual cultural competition for DEWA female employees during his meeting with members of the DEWA Women's Committee.
The committee is organising the competition for the fifth consecutive year, in conjunction with International Women's Day.
This year's competition is in line with the global hashtag #AccelerateAction, which focuses on the need to strengthen efforts to achieve gender equality and accelerate progress across sectors, as well as raise awareness about the role of women in sustainable development and highlight their achievements at a local and international level.
During the meeting, Al Tayer noted that the Emirati model of women's empowerment is globally respected and recognised as an inspiring example of promoting inclusivity in sustainable development. He congratulated DEWA female employees on the occasion of International Women's Day 2025, noting that their dedication and hard work had made them inspiring role models for women in general, and working women in particular.
"The pivotal contribution of women in the prosperity and development journey is a natural result of the pioneering approach adopted by the late Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace.
"There are 1,939 female employees in DEWA. This includes 579 female employees in administrative and middle-management positions, and many female employees in leadership positions. At DEWA, 37.12 % of management positions are held by female employees, which is one of the highest rates in the world. Notably, most of these positions are occupied by Emirati women,' added Al Tayer.
Fatima Al Jokar, Chairperson of DEWA Women's Committee, gave a presentation highlighting DEWA's achievements and activities in the field of women's empowerment in 2024.
"We support DEWA's efforts to foster a supportive environment for female employees, enabling them to turn challenges into opportunities and contribute effectively to building the nation and raising future generations. We are committed to appreciating the competencies, capabilities and dedication of DEWA employees, highlighting their role in benefiting society in all its aspects,' said Al Jokar.

DEWA encourages travellers to activate ‘Away Mode' for smart water, energy use this summer

Dubai, UAE: As part of its 'Expand Your Smart Choices This Summer' campaign, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has urged its residential customers to activate the 'Away Mode' feature before travelling. This feature helps ensure efficient electricity and water use by allowing customers to monitor their electricity and water use while travelling. It can be activated through DEWA's website and smart app, with options to select the service activation period. The 'Away Mode' feature also provides daily or weekly data by email, thus facilitating early intervention and reducing waste. DEWA also recommends turning off all lights and setting timers for garden and exterior floodlights before travelling. Additionally, customers should close water valves and inspect for potential leaks through regular maintenance of electricity and water connections. DEWA recommends using specialised technicians for maintenance work. Through the DEWA Store on its smart app, customers can hire reliable technical service providers in the event of internal building faults. Furthermore, DEWA advises customers to benefit from the digital services and features it provides within the Smart Living initiative to reduce waste. This initiative allows customers to monitor their bills and tariff brackets, and to track electricity and water consumption daily, weekly and monthly through a dedicated data panel. The Consumption Assessment Tool helps customers analyse their consumption patterns and identify opportunities for enhancement, providing a detailed report and customised tips to boost efficiency. The High-Water Usage Alert service instantly notifies customers of unusual consumption beyond the meter, helping them to identify detect leaks early on. DEWA launched the 'Expand Your Smart Choices This Summer' campaign in June to raise awareness of its innovative digital tools that allow customers to proactively monitor consumption and adopt a more efficient, sustainable lifestyle, particularly during the summer. General tips and guidelines on consumption management can be found on DEWA's smart app and website, under 'Consumption Management During Summer'.

UAE announces closure of 77 social media accounts for violations

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), in collaboration with the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), announced the closure of 77 social media accounts for violations during the first half of this year. This action was taken after MoHRE investigated these accounts, which were found to be unofficial and operating without a licence from the Ministry to carry out domestic worker recruitment activities, constituting a clear legal violation. MoHRE urges employers as well as both Emirati and resident families to only engage with licensed and approved domestic worker recruitment agencies when looking to hire this category of workers, and avoid dealing with social media accounts and pages that promote the recruitment of illegal domestic workers. Picture used for illustrative purpose only. File / WAM In a press statement, the Ministry clarified that dealing with unlicensed domestic worker recruitment agencies and unreliable social media pages promoting domestic worker services could lead to customers losing their legal rights, which are guaranteed when they exclusively deal with Ministry-licensed and approved agencies. The Ministry encourages customers to contact their call centre at 600590000 to verify the reliability of any entities promoting domestic workers through social media. A list of licensed agencies across the UAE, including their names and locations, is available on the Ministry's website: .
