Bengaluru stampede
NEW DELHI: A day after the deadly stampede during RCB's IPL victory parade that killed 11 people and left at least 70 injured, Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara on Thursday announced that the government would formulate a fresh Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all mega public events and celebrations in the state.
The move comes amid massive public outrage and mounting questions over lapses in planning and crowd control outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where thousands had gathered to catch a glimpse of the RCB team that clinched its maiden IPL title.
"According to information from Bangalore Metro, Over 8 lakh people travelled till 11pm on Wednesday. You can imagine how much crowd had come," Parameshwara told reporters, highlighting the unprecedented turnout that overwhelmed the stadium's 30,000 capacity.
Metro records support the claim — Namma Metro recorded its highest-ever single-day ridership on June 4, with 9,66,732 passengers, nearly triple the usual footfall, said a BMRCL release.
Purple Line carried 4.78 lakh passengers, Green Line saw 2.84 lakh, and the Majestic interchange alone handled over 2 lakh commuters. Overcrowding led to temporary shutdowns of Cubbon Park, Vidhana Soudha, and MG Road stations in the evening.

Calling the incident a tragic first in the state's cricketing history, Parameshwara said a new SOP would be created under the home department, mandating all future mega events to follow police-sanctioned crowd control frameworks.
"Such deaths shouldn't happen. Innocents should not die. Many victims were youngsters, aged between 20 and 25, who came to celebrate. They wouldn't have expected to lose their lives,' he said.
'It pains anyone to look at the dead bodies.'
Inquiry ordered, lapses to be fixed
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a magisterial inquiry led by the Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner. 'If any lapses are found, strict action will be taken against whoever is responsible,' Parameshwara said.
So far, 46 of the injured have been discharged from hospitals while 10 remain admitted, though their condition is not serious, according to doctors.
The minister refused to speculate on accountability ahead of the inquiry but said responsibilities would be fixed after identifying the lapses.
When asked about the FIR not being filed, Parameshwara said he would discuss the matter with the Police Commissioner and the DGP.
Ignored warnings?
Asked if senior officials had advised against hosting the felicitation event in such haste, Parameshwara said,
'There are such claims, let's see who said what and when.'
He admitted the RCB team's arrival created a celebratory frenzy across the city. 'There were celebrations all through Tuesday night. By morning, the mood for another celebration had set in.'
'No one expected three lakh people to come against the stadium's capacity of just 30,000,' he said.
The minister said he would visit the incident site and also hold meetings with RCB officials and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to discuss future precautions.
At the Vidhana Soudha, where a separate RCB felicitation was held, no major incident occurred, though Parameshwara admitted that some crowd mismanagement happened and 'sticks were reportedly thrown at the media for obstructing the view'.
A new SOP, he reiterated, will ensure tragedies like this are never repeated.

Unplanned, unapproved, unforgivable: Lessons and questions from Bengaluru stampede tragedy that took 11 young lives

The fatal events unfolded within less than 24 hours of RCB's title win. Without any clear coordination between the RCB management, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and the state government, an open-top bus parade was publicly announced by RCB early on June 4. The rally was set to start from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium — right through Bengaluru's busiest Central Business District. Also Read - Ramachandra Guha slams Karnataka government: 'Top cop made a scapegoat in Bengaluru tragedy' But here lies the first big question, 'Was the Bengaluru Police informed?". RCB's announcement of the 'Victory Parade' appeared to have caught city police off guard. Just two hours later, police issued a public statement saying the parade was cancelled due to security concerns and lack of clearance. Yet, the damage was already done. Thousands of fans had already begun making their way to the stadium, assuming the event would proceed. To add to the confusion, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar welcomed the RCB team at the airport and took them to Vidhana Soudha, further fueling assumptions that celebrations were still on. Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma, present with her husband Virat Kohli, even posted videos of the massive crowd chasing the team bus, calling the experience 'unbelievable.' Clearly, there was no clarity on whether this was a cancelled event or an impromptu, unsanctioned celebration. Also Read - Karnataka CM's political secretary K Govindaraj sacked amid Bengaluru stampede outrage Multiple reports suggest that the Bengaluru Police had raised red flags about the parade, but there was internal pressure to go ahead regardless. The result? Mismanaged crowds, no clear access routes, and a deadly stampede triggered by sheer chaos outside a stadium that already struggles to handle traffic on a match day. Chinnaswamy Stadium has hosted similar crowds before. But what made this different was the false promise and the idea that fans could just show up and catch a glimpse of their heroes celebrating up close — without a plan. These are not just questions for a press conference. These are questions that decide whether such a tragedy will ever happen again. No victory — no matter how historic — is worth human lives. And no photograph or selfie with a trophy can be more important than public safety. What the Bengaluru stampede teaches us is stark, when institutional arrogance and coordination failures meet fan frenzy, disaster is inevitable. Whether it's Bengaluru, Prayagraj, Goa, or Tirupati — stampedes are not acts of God. They are products of neglect, poor planning, and sometimes, sheer ego. And until those in power — sports franchises, civic leaders, and governments — take responsibility instead of hiding behind 'suspensions' and 'probes', such tragedies will repeat. As fans, it's important to remember: celebration is not worth dying for. And as a society, we must ensure that no city becomes a stage for yet another avoidable tragedy.

'If India get flogged 5-0 in England ... ': Michael Clarke's bold claim on Virat Kohli's Test comeback

Virat Kohli (PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: Former Australia captain Michael Clarke believes Virat Kohli , who has often called Test cricket the pinnacle of the sport, might come out of retirement if India endure a heavy defeat in the upcoming five-Test series in England and the team management and selectors request his return. Kohli had announced his retirement from the longest format last month after playing 123 Tests for India, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. If India go to England and get flogged, if they lose the series 5-0 for example, I think the fans will want Virat Kohli to come out of retirement and play Test cricket again," Clarke told the Beyond23 Cricket podcast on Friday. "And I honestly, I think if he was asked by the captain, selectors and supported by fans, if they get beaten big time in England, I think he'll come. He still loves Test cricket. "I think his words, I think those words, like you could hear his passion for Test cricket is real.' 16:33 Gautam Gambhir sends stern message after Bengaluru tragedy After fulfilling his long-standing dream of winning the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kohli had said the title still ranked 'five levels under Test cricket.' Trump, Musk, and the Big Beautiful Breakup

Donald Trump, left, and Elon Musk depart the White House to board Marine One en route to New Jersey, March 21, 2025, in Washington. (AP) TOI correspondent from Washington: The epic war between the world's richest man and the world's most powerful man kept America -- and the world -- enthralled on Friday as attempts to bring about a truce between Elon Musk and Donald Trump failed. There was a brief prospect of reconciliation on Thursday night as mutual friends tried to patch things up after Musk ratcheted up his attacks on the President, linking Trump to the pedophile Epstein. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!' he posted on X. Trump ignored the charge but he responded to the broader issue of their falling out, saying he had asked Musk to leave the White House because he was 'wearing thin,' and he (Musk) went "crazy" because the administration took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that "nobody else wanted." Things went further south when the President posted, "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!' That triggered Musk to warn that he would decommission SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, critical for NASA's International Space Station operations, a threat he later retracted. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Amid the heated, real-time exchanges on social media, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman got in a word edgewise, asking the warring duo to reunite "for the benefit of our great country." Musk responded, "You're not wrong," and reportedly sought a Trump phone call, which the President rejected on Friday, characterizing Musk as the "man who has lost his mind." Officials though warned the President could change his mind. Chances of a truce appeared to have been derailed by Musk himself after he mused about the President's political mortality in the hours before, telling social media gadabout Laura Loomer that "Trump has 3.5 years left as President, but I will be around for 40+ years…" This came after he tried to talk up JD Vance for the Oval Office following a Trump impeachment proposed by some critics. But the US vice-president smacked down the idea, saying, "President Trump has done more than any person in my lifetime to earn the trust of the movement he leads. I'm proud to stand beside him." Several GOP lawmakers rallied around Trump saying Musk had "gone too far" in the feud. Musk also posted a poll on X asking, "Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?" There were more than 5 million responses, with more than 80 percent saying "yes." A variety of other characters waded into the drama, offering millions of political junkies a constant high. While Ackman and other billionaires and tech bros sought to keep a lid on the explosion, former Trump advisor Steve Bannon and other MAGA hardliners, who see Musk as an interloper, poured gasoline on the fumes, demanding Trump seize's Musk's SpaceX invoking national security provisions and deport Musk, although the South Africa born Tesla boss is now a US citizen. A current Trump advisor Peter Navarro, among many in the President's inner circle happy with the departure of the man some called a "co-President," said Musk was just 'a special government employee with an expiration date.' Russia too stepped into the American swamp, offering Musk political asylum if his feud with Trump went further south. Some of the feuding bordered on the petulant, with several media outlets reporting that Trump now plans to sell the red Tesla S that he bought with great fanfare after celebrating Musk and his cars on the White House lawns just a few weeks ago. The banner headline in the NewYork Post said it all: I HATE MY X.
