Stealing display speaker: Man gets six months

Kota Kinabalu: A 34-year-old undocumented man was sentenced to six months' jail by the Magistrate's Court here, Monday, for stealing a RM1,699 worth of display speaker from a retail outlet. Hasanal Ismail pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing the offence on July 6, this year, at 6.14pm, at the EWT Technology store, on the second floor of Suria Sabah Shopping Mall. The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years, and a possible fine, on conviction. The facts of the case, presented by the prosecution, stated that the incident came to light when the store owner lodged a police report at 12.41pm on July 8, stating that a unit of the Marshall Middleton display speaker had gone missing and was believed to have been stolen. Investigations revealed that on July 6, at 7pm, while the complainant was in the store's office, an employee named Bing alerted him that the speaker was missing from the display shelf. The complainant then reviewed the store's CCTV footage, which showed an unidentified man cutting the cable securing the speaker and placing the item into a shopping bag before walking out of the premises. The act was captured at 6.14pm on July 6. Unrepresented, Hasanal requested for a lenient sentence while the prosecution called for a deterrent sentence. The court ordered Hasanal to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter. In another case, a 26-year-old unemployed man was charged with disposing of stolen jewellery. Md Shah Rizz Mali pleaded not guilty to committing the offence involving a gold bangle worth RM5,178 belonging to one Chua So Ting on May 31, this year, at 1.14pm, at a jewellery store in Suria Sabah here. Md Shah was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code. Inspector Yusdi Basri, who prosecuted, informed the court that the offence was non-bailable but proposed bail be set at RM7,000 if the court decided to allow it. Counsel Lim Chun Yuan, representing Shah, applied for a lower bail amount, citing unemployment. The court fixed Sept 11 for pre-trial case management (PTCM) and released the accused on a bail of RM1,600 in two sureties with the additional condition to report to the Manggatal Police Station once a month. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old jobless man was charged with attempted theft. Undocumented Haikal Alez claimed trial to attempting to steal two compressor fan blades, a compressor cover plate, six pieces of copper pipe, a roll of electrical wire and two units of pliers belonging to Bafang Industrial Sdn Bhd at Bandar Sierra, in Manggatal, on July 13, at 6.30pm. He was charged under Section 379, read with Section 511, of the Penal Code. Indian national arrested at KLIA with 2,500 red-eared sliders
SEPANG: An Indian national was arrested at Terminal 1 of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) after authorities discovered 2,500 red-eared slider turtles worth an estimated RM348,000 hidden in his suitcase. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) said the man, who was scheduled to board a flight to Bengaluru, India, was detained at the departure gate at about 10.05pm on Tuesday. "Acting on information, a team of KLIA's MCBA personnel, along with the Aviation Security team, scanned his luggage, which revealed suspicious images. "Further checks found thousands of red-eared slider turtles hidden in his suitcase. "The exotic animals were seized for further investigations under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008," the statement said. Based on the images shared, the red-eared slider turtles — a semi-aquatic species — were found stuffed inside several plastic containers and small boxes before being placed in the suitcase. MCBA said the successful seizure resulted from integrated inspections and close cooperation between KLIA's MCBA, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, Aviation Security, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad in tackling rampant wildlife smuggling Red eared slider turtles are often smuggled due to their popularity in the exotic pet trade and status as an invasive species. High demand and import bans in many countries drive the illegal trade.

Trio in viral leftovers video released on police bail in Seremban
SEREMBAN: Three teenagers linked to a viral video showing them giving leftovers to a homeless man have been released on police bail. Seremban police chief ACP Mohamad Hatta Che Din confirmed the suspects, aged 14, 18, and 19, were freed after being remanded for questioning. The incident allegedly occurred in various locations around the district. The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from the trio, believed to be social media influencers. MCMC seized three mobile phones and SIM cards during investigations at the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters in Johor. Man arrested for trespassing on Masjid Jamek LRT tracks in KL
KUALA LUMPUR: A man believed to be a foreigner was arrested for trespassing onto the Light Rail Transit tracks at Masjid Jamek station. The incident occurred yesterday along the Ampang line. Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman confirmed the arrest. The suspect, in his 20s, was spotted crossing from Platform 2 to Platform 1 via the tracks at 10.11 am. The Integrated Control Centre alerted a Prasarana auxiliary police officer, who apprehended the suspect. The man was taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters for further action. Sulizmie stated that the suspect failed to produce valid identification documents. He had reportedly trespassed to take a shortcut to his workplace. A police investigation has been initiated under Section 447 of the Penal Code. Authorities are also applying Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. A remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be filed today. This will aid in ongoing investigations. Sulizmie urged the public to avoid trespassing in restricted areas.
