Meta shuts down accounts posting sexual content of SA school children
Anonymous Instagram accounts and WhatsApp Channels distributing explicit child pornography involving South African school children have been shut down
This is according to Meta, which was given until 12pm on Tuesday to shut down all the accounts and channels linked to the distribution of sexual content involving school children and to 'permanently disable the creator of the WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles listed' from creating any further WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles.
Judgment
Gauteng High Court Judge Mudunwazi Makamu handed down the judgment in an order sought by Digital Law Company, directed by social media law expert Emma Sadlier, in Johannesburg on Monday.
In the urgent ruling, Makamu agreed with the arguments by advocate Ben Winks that children have been victimised by the publication of lurid and sexually explosive material that was published on Instagram accounts and WhatsApp channels.
Sadlier welcomed the ruling.

Meta responds
In response to The Citizen, a Meta spokesperson stated that the company has taken action as ordered.
'We have zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation and are committed to ensuring the safety of all users on our platforms.
'We can confirm that the accounts we have been able to identify have been shut down, and we have submitted reports to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in line with applicable laws. We will continue to engage with law enforcement and respond to valid legal requests,' the Meta spokesperson said.
Explicit content
According to Sadlier, the content on the channels included several explicit images and videos, including that of a Grade 11 pupil from a school south of Johannesburg having sex with a girl in a room, while another video shows a Grade 12 boy having sex with a Grade 9 girl in a school bathroom, apparently filmed by another pupil.
'From time to time, it appears that Meta administrators will delete or block some of the pages and channels (presumably in response to user complaints). However, not long after, the same page or channel will be active again, or another channel will crop up replicating the previous channel – and the distribution of illegal content continues unabated,' Sadlier said.
Sadlier warned parents to check their children's phones.
'I just want to alert parents to one of the biggest issues, and that is that these kids are all joining WhatsApp channels… The kind of content being circulated on these channels is horrific, child sexual abuse images, child pornography'.

Scammer targets Durban seafood business; owner loses thousands to online fraud
In a shocking incident that underscores the rising tide of online scams, a Durban-based seafood business has suffered a considerable loss of R6,492 at the hands of a cunning fraudster this past weekend. The owner, who remains unnamed, reported the incident to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) after discovering that several Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT) for seafood orders had failed to reflect in their account. The ordeal began on Friday when the scammer made contact with the business through WhatsApp, placing a sizable order that included seafood boil, prawn platters, and an assortment of frozen seafood. To validate the transaction, the fraudster provided what appeared to be a convincing proof of payment from First National Bank (FNB). Believing the payment to be genuine, the business owner prepared the order, which was subsequently collected by an E-Hailing driver. The following day, the scammer placed a second order worth R4,300.00. However, the owner's instinct kicked in, and they requested an instant payment before releasing the goods. The scammer again sent a fraudulent proof of payment, but this time, the owner was wary. Upon contacting their bank for verification, they were informed that the payments had never been made, marking the moment the owner realised they had been scammed. In a twist of deception, the scammer persistently contacted the owner afterwards, falsely claiming that the payment had been successful. This individual, described as an Indian male, is just one among many con artists employing similar tactics to exploit small business owners. The modus operandi of these scammers often involves recruiting unsuspecting E-Hailing drivers to collect goods. After providing drivers with an address and directing them to leave the products in unsecured locations, the con artists promptly pay them through cash transfer services while creating an elaborate web of deceit that complicates the recovery of stolen goods. Scams like this are proliferating, particularly on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, where sellers are pressured into swift transactions without confirming the legitimacy of a payment. 'Buyers often target sellers during banking hours or intend to verify payments in a limited timeframe, making it ripe for unscrupulous tactics,' warned a RUSA spokesperson. In light of this incident, the public is urged to exercise due diligence by verifying all bank deposits prior to releasing any goods, especially during online transactions. As these scams continue to evolve, taking precautionary steps can help guard against future fraud.

EFF praises arrest of suspects in DJ Sumbody's murder case

Image: X The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has welcomed the arrest of the four suspects linked to the murder of Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody. This comes after the suspected killers appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, following their arrest on Monday afternoon. Their matter was subsequently postponed to July 29 with reports that one of the suspects is a known businessman, identified as Katiso Molefe, while the rest are alleged hitmen. The police further allege that the suspects are linked to 10 other high-profile cases, including the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart. "The [police] team arrested four men between the ages of 45 and 60 in connection with the murder of a popular South African DJ, Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody. Michael Pule, Floyd Mabusela, Mosa Kekana, and businessman Katiso Molefe, who is the alleged mastermind, are expected back in court on July 29," said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe. Mathe confirmed that the suspects, aged between 45 and 60, were apprehended on Monday afternoon. The EFF, in a statement, welcomed the arrest, with the party stating: "We commend Gauteng's organised crime detectives and the Political Killings Task Team for their determined and methodical investigation, which has now resulted in the arrest of three suspected hitmen and the individual believed to have ordered the killing. A firearm recovered during the operation has been linked to multiple murders, highlighting the systemic nature of this violence and the importance of specialised units to combat it." In 2022, the gruesome murder of the talented artist sent shockwaves across the country after he was shot dead while driving in Woodmead. According to Mathe, this discovery suggests that the individuals involved in DJ Sumbody's death may be part of a larger network responsible for orchestrating and carrying out violent crimes in and around Johannesburg. She added that Swart, an engineer from Vereeniging, was gunned down outside his workplace in what appears to have been a case of mistaken identity. He was shot 23 times by an alleged hitman who reportedly mistook him for another employee. "We can confirm that four suspects who were arrested on Monday on the murder of DJ Sumbody have appeared today. They have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the possession of illegal firearms, as well as ammunition. What is interesting is that the same suspects who were arrested were wanted for the murder of 30-year-old Armand Swart," she stated. While the police have not yet disclosed the full details regarding the motive, IOL has reported that those close to the investigation suggest that the killing may have stemmed from disputes involving business dealings or personal rivalries.
