Meta Platforms and Google Just Shared Fantastic News for Broadcom Investors

Globe and Mail17-02-2025
Big tech is planning a massive spending spree in 2025. Four of the largest tech companies in the world are targeting a combined $320 billion in capital expenditures (capex) this year, and most of that spending will go toward building and refreshing artificial intelligence (AI) data centers for training and using generative AI.
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) is sure to be a big winner from all of that spending. Practically all of the big tech companies reiterated the importance of their relationships with the leading designer of graphics processing units (GPUs). But comments from the management of Meta Platforms and Google parent Alphabet suggested a bright future for another chipmaker.
Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) could end up being a big winner from the increase in spending by big tech in 2025 and beyond. Here's what Meta and Google said, and what it means for Broadcom investors.
The rise of custom chips
Broadcom makes a lot of different types of semiconductors. When it comes to AI data centers, it plays an essential role. It makes chips for network switches, the devices that make sure data moves quickly and efficiently among servers. In effect, Broadcom's chips make sure Nvidia's chips are working as effectively as possible in Meta's and Google's data centers.
But Broadcom also makes some other chips that Meta and Google deploy in their data centers. Its technology is behind Meta's custom AI chip, the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA).
Google, meanwhile, has been working with Broadcom since 2015 to develop its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). Both Meta and Google had good things to say about their custom chips during their fourth-quarter earnings calls.
During Meta's call, chief financial officer Susan Li told analysts: "In 2024, we started deploying MTIA to our ranking and recommendation influence workloads for ads and organic content. We expect to further ramp adoption of MTIA for these use cases throughout 2025."
Over the long run, Meta sees its chips taking over more and more of its AI data centers from Nvidia and general GPUs. "Next year, we're hoping to expand MTIA to support some of our core AI training workloads, and over time, some of our GenAI use cases," Li said later in the call.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said that in the fourth quarter, "We saw strong uptake of Trillium, our sixth-generation TPU." The company only launched its newest TPUs to the general public in December, giving developers less than three weeks to ramp up use before the end of the quarter. So, the comments suggest 2025 could be a big year for TPUs.
Custom AI accelerator chips are more efficient than general-purpose GPUs for many types of AI workloads. As big tech scales up its data centers, eking out small efficiencies can have a big impact on the bottom line. As a result, expanding the uses for custom chips and having full control over the technology stack become increasingly important as capex budgets grow.
Broadcom expects even stronger results long term
Alphabet and Meta aren't the only companies partnering with Broadcom to build custom AI accelerators. TikTok parent company ByteDance is one of its three largest customers. And during the fourth-quarter earnings call, Broadcom management announced two new customers building their own next-generation chips with its help. Many believe those are Apple and OpenAI.
Apple is notably a fan of Broadcom's chips. It used Google's previous-generation TPUs to train its Apple Intelligence system last year. A push by Apple to take more control of its AI training and development could quickly turn it into one of Broadcom's biggest customers.
The company expects the market for custom AI accelerators to grow to between $60 billion and $90 billion within three years. Last year, Broadcom accounted for roughly 70% of custom AI accelerators and generated about $12 billion in sales.
For reference, its total sales across its diversified operations for 2024 were just $51.6 billion, so the growth in AI chips alone could nearly double its revenue if it maintains its share of the market.
But even with a bright future, valuation still matters. Broadcom's stock trades for 37 times forward earnings as of this writing. And while the chipmaker is poised to see very strong earnings growth over the next few years, it's hard to justify paying such a premium for the stock.
If the stock price came down to a value closer to 30 times 2025 earnings, it may be worth buying considering analysts expect more than 30% earnings growth this year, giving it a price/earnings-to-growth ratio of around 1. Or if adoption of Broadcom's custom chips proves even stronger than expected at this point as Meta and Google look to expand their use in their data centers, it could end up growing into that valuation.
Broadcom is certainly a company and a stock to keep an eye on for investors interested in the future of artificial intelligence. But right now, it's too expensive to recommend buying.

Why Clean Energy Fuels Stock Raced Nearly 13% Higher Today

Key Points The energy company delivered better-than-expected numbers in its latest earnings release. It beat on both the top and bottom lines with second-quarter results. 10 stocks we like better than Clean Energy Fuels › Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ: CLNE), a company that sells renewable natural gas (RNG) as a fuel for automobiles, scored a clean win on the stock exchange Friday. Its shares zoomed almost 13% higher after it unveiled its latest set of quarterly results, which, among other things, featured a double beat on analyst estimates. With that performance, it crushed the 0.8% increase of the S&P 500 index. Confidence renewed after results published Clean Energy Fuels' second quarter saw the company post revenue of $102.6 million, which was nearly 5% higher on a year-over-year basis. Non-GAAP (adjusted) net income fell to $337,000, shaking out to less than $0.01 per share. Despite the bottom-line decline, analysts were expecting notably worse results. On average, they were modeling slightly over $94 million for revenue and a net loss of $0.06 per share. In its earnings release, Clean Energy Fuels CEO Andrew Littlefair said, "RNG remains the most immediate and cost-effective clean transportation fuel, as we see continued strong demand reflected in our solid second quarter results." Littlefair also pointed out that the government's recently passed "big, beautiful bill" supports the RNG market. Its extension of the clean fuel production tax credit should be a boon for RNG producers and suppliers. Powering big fleets Clean Energy Fuels is doing quite well in its rather limited niche, and during the quarter, it executed new supply arrangements with a number of municipal transit fleets, including LA Metro in Los Angeles. Such customers tend to be long-term and reliable, so it'll be worthwhile for investors to keep an eye on how the segment continues to develop for the company. 5 Important Takeaways From SoFi's Blowout Earnings Report

Key Points SoFi reported earnings that handily beat expectations on both the top and bottom lines. The loan platform business is generating an impressive stream of fee income. SoFi's asset quality is improving, with the net charge-off ratio declining by more than 40 basis points. 10 stocks we like better than SoFi Technologies › SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ: SOFI) recently reported its second-quarter earnings, and the stock soared to a multiyear high. Not only were the numbers generally stronger than analysts had been looking for, but the company also is growing in all the right ways and has big plans. With that in mind, here are some of the key takeaways from SoFi's earnings report that you need to know, and what to keep an eye on. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » 1. Growth momentum isn't slowing down In the second quarter, revenue growth was 44% year over year, an acceleration over its prior rate. The company grew its membership base by 34% year over year, adding 846,000 new members, the highest single-quarter total ever. 2. Capital-light revenue streams are strong SoFi has been a personal lender for years, but the recent focus has been on the loan platform business, which consists of several capital-light streams of fee income. In addition to securitizing loans and selling them to investors, the company has been originating a high volume of loans on behalf of third parties and referring applicants to other lending partners. Its loan platform is generating high-margin fee income at a rate of more than $500 million annually on a run rate of $9.5 billion in loan originations. Fee-based revenue now makes up 44% of the company's total, compared with 27% a couple of years ago, and this shift is a big reason for SoFi's surprisingly strong profitability. Noninterest income roughly quadrupled year over year, and the loan platform business has been the primary driver. 3. Profits are better than expected Not only did SoFi produce better-than-expected profitability in the second quarter, but the company also reported its highest earnings per share (EPS) ever. It produced an 11% adjusted net margin, and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) increased 80% year over year. And management raised its full-year 2025 guidance for all major profitability metrics and now expects EPS to more than double from 2024 levels. 4. Asset quality is improving SoFi's loan net charge-off rate ticked higher in 2023 but it has been in a clear downward trend for nearly two years. Since it peaked at 3.98% in late 2023, the net charge-off rate for personal loans has declined to 2.83%, including a 48-basis-point sequential drop in the most recent quarter. 5. More than personal loans SoFi is well known for its personal loan business, and for good reason. But the company also originates student loans and home loans, and I'd argue that these are underappreciated growth drivers. In the second quarter, student loan volume grew by 35%, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it accelerate in the second half of the year, since more pandemic-era federal student loan protections have expired recently. For example, borrowers whose loans are in limbo as the SAVE repayment plan makes its way through the legal system just recently saw interest start accumulating on their student loans again. Perhaps most exciting is the fintech's home loan business, which grew volume by more than 90% year over year despite a slow real estate market and persistent high interest rates. There's a lot of pent-up demand for home purchases as well as for refinancing and home equity lines of credit, and if mortgage rates fall, this could become a big business. What to watch The second half of 2025 could be an exciting time for SoFi. The Federal Reserve is widely expected to resume interest rate cuts, and this could help lower the company's deposit cost. Also, management is bringing back cryptocurrency trading before the end of the year and has other big plans to integrate cryptocurrency and blockchain technology throughout its platform. Along with its earnings report, SoFi announced a plan to raise $1.5 billion in fresh capital by selling new common stock. With plenty of growth opportunities, this could help take its business to the next level. Should you invest $1,000 in SoFi Technologies right now? Before you buy stock in SoFi Technologies, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and SoFi Technologies wasn't one of them. Scam centers exposed as Meta purges millions of WhatsApp accounts

NEW YORK CITY, New York: Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has announced that it removed 6.8 million WhatsApp accounts in the first half of the year due to their ties with international scam networks. These accounts were linked to organized criminal "scam centers" operating across borders, targeting people through online fraud. The mass takedown is part of Meta's broader effort to fight online scams, which have become more frequent and sophisticated. In a statement released this week, Meta said it is also introducing new tools on WhatsApp to help users identify and avoid scams. One such feature is a safety notice that appears when someone not in your contact list adds you to a group chat. Another ongoing test will prompt users to pause before replying to suspicious messages. According to Meta, criminal scam centers, often run through forced labor and organized crime, are among the most active sources of digital fraud. These scammers frequently switch platforms to avoid detection, sometimes beginning on dating apps or SMS and then moving to social media or payment platforms. Meta cited recent scam campaigns that used Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Telegram, and even ChatGPT to spread fraudulent schemes. These included fake offers to pay for social media engagement, pyramid schemes, and misleading cryptocurrency investment pitches. One such campaign, reportedly run from a scam center in Cambodia, was disrupted by Meta in collaboration with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. The scammers had been using AI-generated messages to trick users and expand their operations across platforms. With scams growing more elaborate, Meta is urging users to remain cautious and use the new security tools being rolled out across its services.
