Michael Sheen ‘worried' about opportunities for young people getting into acting
He said: 'It is quite scary. I look back on my pathway of coming through, starting with a supportive family, coming from an area, you know it was old steel town and, sort of tough place to grow up in, not the sort of place you'd expect actors to come from but because we had Richard Burton that came from there and Anthony Hopkins …
'I again, one of the things I've realised as time has gone on is how important it is to see where you come from, represented on the world stage, and to know that it's possible.
'I never questioned whether you could be successful as an actor, because Burton and Hopkins were and they came from this town.'
He said: 'It does worry me that, for young people who might want to get into this, if you are relying on the bank of mum and dad or… it's really tough to even just to go and move to London, or move to wherever these places are.
'That's why it's so important to get stuff out of London and around the country.'
Earlier in the year, Sheen launched a theatre company called Welsh National Theatre, which is envisioned as separate from but complementary to Theatr Cymru, which was established in 2003 as the Welsh language national company.
National Theatre Wales closed its doors in its current form as a theatre company in December 2024, after funding was withdrawn in 2023.
On TV, Sheen has starred in series including US period drama Masters Of Sex, sitcom 30 Rock, and fantasy show Good Omens, alongside David Tennant.
He has portrayed a number of real-life public figures including former prime minister Sir Tony Blair in 2006 film The Queen, journalist David Frost in 2008's Frost/Nixon, and the Duke of York in Prime Video mini-series A Very Royal Scandal.
On stage he has played Welsh Labour Party politician Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan in the show Nye, which recently finished at the National Theatre.

As the Welsh legend greeted crowds, he said: "Thank you very much, is everyone feeling alright? Are we going to have a good time tonight?" Tom then went on to speak about his Welsh roots, saying it was "fantastic to be back". Though Tom hasn't lived in Wales for many years, since his career went stratospheric in the 1960s and he travelled the world and had residencies in Las Vegas and a home in LA, he still sounds like he's walked Taff Street in Ponty daily for decades. The proud Welsh man put paid to the doubters and said: ""It always feels fantastic to be back in Wales. People tell me, but you don't live in Wales do you? "But Wales lives in me." The singer then broke into a chant of 'Oggy oggy oggy.' Later, the 85-year-old also told a story about his old school friend called Brian who he we wound up an old school teacher with. The singer remembered how the teacher smacked him so hard his ear drum burst, confessing that he still has problems with it today. UKTV has shared an update on two of its shows following speculation amid the Edinburgh TV Festival this week that they aren't expected to be renewed for a second series An update has been given on two game shows amid speculation that they aren't due to return. One, hosted by Dermot O'Leary, launched just months ago, whilst the other, fronted by Jimmy Carr, debuted with its first series last year. It's been suggested that Silence is Golden and Battle in the Box aren't expected to return on UKTV. It comes amid this year's Edinburgh TV Festival, which opened yesterday, with the broadcaster among those taking part. Silence is Golden launched in May. Hosted by Dermot, the six part series saw a studio audience tasked with not making any noise in a bid to split £250,000 between them. Battle in the Box, hosted by Jimmy, debuted last year. Over eight episodes, viewers saw pairs of celebrities "battle it out" in a box. Amid speculation that both shows aren't likely to be renewed, UKTV has provided an update. A spokesperson to the Mirror this evening that "no decisions" have been made on either Silence is Golden or Battle in the Box yet. The update comes after it was reported that UKTV executives spoke about both shows at the Edinburgh TV Festival this week. The broadcaster was the subject of a panel discussion at the annual festival in Scotland this morning. According to the Sun, executives teased that they are looking elsewhere for content. They said: "[They are] both fantastic shows and maybe in another universe we might be keeping both of those shows at the moment landing shows at that budget and scale that's not where our heads are at. "We are really looking to try and do something different so we can bring it back in volume. They are great producers and we have absolutely work loved working with both of them." Silence is Golden, which launched in May, saw the studio audience, who all had microphones on, given £250,000 to split between them. They were tasked with not making any noise in order to ensure the prize fund didn't reduce. Katherine Ryan, Seann Walsh and Fatiha El-Ghorri were the team captains, who, along with special guests, were pitted against the audience. They were tasked with making them react to situations in the hope of lowering the prize fund. Every sound from the audience brought the total prize money down. If the entertainers in each episode managed to get it to reach zero through various activities on stage, they would be able to give the prize money to charity. Battle in the Box, which premiered in July last year, was described as an "outlandish game show" involving pairs of celebrities who were stuck inside a box. Each pair competed again another in a series of challenges on the show. It was teased prior to its release that they would "battle it out for pride, prizes, and floorspace while living in a box". Partnerships in the first series included Jamie Laing and Nabil Abdulrashid, as well as Ellie Taylor and Jessica Knappett. A source previously told the Sun that Battle in the Box wasn't expected to return for a second series at least at the moment. The source told the outlet earlier this year: "[It] is being rested and no more series are planned for now."

Lenny Henry says TV industry ‘still struggling' to do black hair and make up
The comedian, 66, picked up the outstanding achievement award at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Wednesday and reflected on his career and experience starting out in the industry in the 1970s. 'It was hard, you know? I mean, they didn't have a light for me', he told the festival. 'I called it the negro light. I said, 'Break out the negro light' and they'd bring out this big-ass spotlight and point it at me.' Sir Lenny, who made his TV debut on British talent show New Faces in 1975, said someone who worked at the BBC 'started to realise that I needed different lighting to those guys'. 'Also there's the thing on (TV series) Three Of A Kind where all the wigs were for white people,' he said. 'So we had Michael Howard and Dave Allen's wigs, and they never had any wigs for me. 'I had to get some dreadlocks for a character. So they sent me to the London wig company, and they made some dreadlocks for me. 'And then a year later, they had more stuff for me to do, and they got nearer, closer to what they should be like. 'And so I sort of began a whole thing where they had to know how to make black hair, and they had to know how to do black make up.' He added: 'They're still struggling with it. People like (make up artists) Jan Sewell and Sally Sutton really knew how to do it, because they did it on my show. 'But before then, they never had to do it. 'I went to a black make up lady on The Fosters in 1976 and I thought, 'Oh, it's going to be like this. There's going to be people that do make up for us'. 'Once The Fosters was over I never saw her again.' Sir Lenny was born in Dudley, near Birmingham, in 1958, and shot to fame in 1975 when his stand-up comic routine won TV talent show New Faces. After his TV debut, Sir Lenny appeared on landmark black working-class comedy The Fosters, and comedy sketch show Three Of A Kind, before landing his own self-titled show in the mid-1980s. In 1985 he co-founded Comic Relief, and in 2015 he was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to drama and charity. A year later he was presented with a special Bafta award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to television and in 2020 he helped to launch an independent body that examines representation in journalism, acting, film, television and radio in the UK called the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity. In February he received the Freedom of the City of London and in May he and filmmaker Richard Curtis accepted a philanthropy award recognising Comic Relief's efforts to address inequality and poverty.
