Cognizant to invest $183 million for to build new campus in Vishakapatanam
BENGALURU: Software services firm
Cognizant Technology Solutions
will invest 15.82 billion rupees ($182.76 million) to build a new campus in south Indian city of
Vishakapatanam
that will create about 8,000 jobs, the state government announced on Friday.
Commercial operations will begin in March 2029, an
Andhra Pradesh
government press release said.
Cognizant
did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The announcement comes just months after India's top IT firm,
Tata Consultancy Services
, unveiled plans for 13.70 billion rupee campus in the same city, and is expected generate 12,000 jobs.
The move aligns with Cognizant's strategy to optimise real estate costs. In May 2023, Chief Executive Ravi Kumar S said the company would relinquish 11 million square feet of office space globally, mainly in India's largest cities, while investing in tier-2 Indian cities.
Globally, IT companies, including those in India's $283 billion sector, are taking cost-cutting measures such as monetising real estate assets and delaying wage increases amid demand uncertainty.
Last month, the Teaneck, New Jersey-based company raised its annual revenue forecast and beat first-quarter results driven by increased demand for AI-powered IT services.
Cognizant expects 2025 annual revenue between $20.5 billion and $21.0 billion, compared to previous outlook of the midpoint of $20.30 billion to $20.80 billion.

While the reasons for the shutdown remain unclear, the decision closely follows the cancellation of the JCB Literature Foundation's licence. A notice dated March 12 on the award's official website stated that the foundation had applied to the Registrar of Companies, Delhi & Haryana, seeking to revoke its Section 8(5) license under the Companies Act, 2013. It added that the organisation would now be reclassified as a 'Private Limited' company, no longer functioning as a foundation. The award was given by the 'foundation', which was established to promote the 'art of literature in India'. About the JCB Prize for Literature Founded in 2018, the JCB Prize was widely celebrated not just for its generous cash prize, but for its commitment to promoting Indian fiction across languages. Five out of the seven winning books were translations — a reflection of the prize's dedication to linguistic diversity. Landmark winners included Jasmine Days by Benyamin (translated from Malayalam), Delhi: A Soliloquy by M Mukundan (Malayalam), The Paradise of Food by Khalid Jawed (Urdu), and Fire Bird by Perumal Murugan (Tamil). Each shortlisted author received ₹ 1 lakh, and in the case of a translated work, the translator was awarded ₹ 50,000. When a translated novel won, the translator took home an impressive ₹ 10 lakh alongside the author's ₹ 25 lakh. Bike taxi riders rally at Vidhana Soudha, urge Karnataka govt to lift ban and frame policy
Several bike taxi riders from across Karnataka took out a bike rally to Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Saturday, urging the state government to lift the ban on bike taxis and introduce a regulatory framework to govern their operations. Riders from cities including Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, Davangere, Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Shivamogga, and Kanakapura participated in the rally. The protest comes in the wake of the Karnataka High Court's order directing bike taxi operators to suspend operations pending the formation of rules under Section 93 of the Motor Vehicles Act by the government. Bike taxi operators claimed that the ban has impacted the livelihoods of more than six lakh people across the state. Many participants claimed the ban has pushed them into financial distress, with no alternative source of income and increasing pressure to meet basic household needs such as groceries, rent, and school fees. 'Before the ban, I could earn enough to keep my family going. Now there's no money coming in,' said Ramesh, a rider from Tumakuru. Ravi, a rider from Mysuru, added, 'This ban hasn't just taken away our jobs – it's taken away our dignity.' Apart from riders, regular commuters have also been affected by the absence of bike taxis, with concerns raised over increased fares and limited transport options. Protesters highlighted that bike taxis had provided a quick and affordable last-mile connectivity option in urban and semi-urban areas. Riders have requested the state government to formulate a bike taxi policy that 'addresses safety, registration, and operational guidelines – similar to what is already in place in 19 other Indian states.' Meanwhile, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has emphasised that the state government is not inclined towards drafting a bike taxi policy and that whiteboard two-wheelers cannot be used for commercial purposes. Officials of the road transport offices across Bengaluru also seized 103 bike taxis earlier this week for operating despite the Karnataka High Court's directive to suspend operations in the state. The transport department officials have booked the riders of the 103 bike taxis across RTO divisions in the central, west, south, north, east, Electronic City, and KR Puram, among others.

Trichy startups get branding support from AU incubation centre
Trichy: The state govt-funded Anna Business Incubation Research Foundation (ABIRF) has extended branding support to nine promising Trichy-based startups in various sectors to enhance their visibility. Under the Startup Brand Identity Launch programme, the foundation, which operates from Anna University Trichy campus, has extended suggestions and designed logos with brand names for the identified startups at a concessional rate. Officials said that all nine startups, which are in their early stage of their business ventures involving technology, are run by youths aged less than 32. The startups are from property technology, food, automobile, and robotics sectors. By using one of the startups nurtured by Anna incubation centre, brand logos and names for nine startups were designed by the centre. "Proper logo and brand names will enhance the startup's visibility, build brand equity, and accelerate market presence for early-stage ventures. "So far, our startup did not have a proper logo, and consumers were not understanding our domain. The new logo and brand name designed with the support of the incubation centre was cost-effective, and customers now understand our operational areas," Vinothkumar Palanivel, founder and CEO of LandMarket, a property tech startup, told TOI. The incubation centre provided suggestions in branding and outreach initiatives for the startups to attract their target consumers. ABIRF, which is supported by Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute (EDII) of Tamil Nadu govt, has provided infrastructural support, mentoring, product development assistance, and investor connect services to the startups.
