Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir threatens to target RIL's Jamnagar refinery

Time of India14 hours ago
NEW DELHI: In his bellicose speech where he threatened to nuke India, Pakistan army chief Asim Munir put a target on Reliance Industries Ltd's refinery - the world's largest single-site refining complex - at Jamnagar in Gujarat in case of any future military conflict with New Delhi, indicating for the first time the intent to hit India's economic assets, especially oil installations.
Speaking at a formal dinner at Tampa, Florida, in the US, Munir referred to a social media post with a Quranic verse along with the picture of RIL chairman
Mukesh Ambani
to say he authorised it during the recent conflict with India "to show them what we will do the next time", media reports quoting those present at the closed-door event said.
While this set off chatter about Munir threatening the richest Indian, with a net worth of over $115 billion heading the oil-to-telecom-to-retail conglomerate, narration in the verse from Surah Al-Fil (The Elephant), the 105th chapter of the Quran, can be interpreted as an aerial attack in modern warfare.
According to open source information, the verse refers to the 'Year of the Elephant, approximately (570 CE), when Abraha, the ruler of Yemen, led an army with elephants to destroy the Kaaba. Allah then sent flocks of birds carrying stones of baked clay, which struck and destroyed Abraha's army.
India continuously evaluates military and other threats to its sensitive economic installations, especially those located in border states or considered within range of Pakistan air attacks.
In the past, there have been separate reports from intelligence agencies about threats to such installations, particularly the RIL refinery, from Pakistan-based terror groups.
Munir chose Ambani to make his threat because the RIL chief symbolises India's economic power and potential. Though there are other oil installations and assets that may be considered vulnerable, the sheer size of the Jamnagar complex makes it the showstopper in India's refining sector with an annual capacity of processing 33 million tonnes of crude, or 12% of India's total refining capacity. It is a major exporter of refined petroleum products.

‘BrahMos chalega': Mithun Chakraborty's fiery retort to Pakistan's Bilawal Bhutto's ‘threat of war' amid tensions around Indus Waters Treaty

In a sharp reaction to Pakistan's Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's reported comments on the Indus Waters Treaty, BJP leader and veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty issued a fiery warning. The actor-turned-politician's remarks came after Bhutto reportedly stated, 'If Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces an attack on the Indus River, he will be attacking our history, culture and civilization… The people of Pakistan have the strength to confront Modi in case of war.' Bhutto also reportedly warned that in the event of another war, Pakistan would 'restore all its six rivers'. Zardari was formerly Pakistan's 37th Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2022 to 2023. Chakraborty responded by saying: 'Agar aisi baatein karte rahenge aur hamari khopdi sanak gayi toh phir ek ke baad ek BrahMos chalega (If you keep talking like this and we lose our minds, then one BrahMos after the other will be launched)… After that, we will open the dam, and a tsunami will occur. I have nothing against the people of Pakistan. I have said all of this to (Bhutto).' He had started his comment in a soft tone: 'I don't want to say anything against the country of Pakistan. People of Pakistan are good, they also don't want war.' #WATCH | Kolkata, WB: On Bilawal Bhutto's reported statement on Indus Waters Treaty, BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty says, '…Agar aisi baatein karte rahenge aur hamari khopdi sanak gayi toh phir ek ke baad ek BrahMos chalega… We have also thought of building a dam where 140… — ANI (@ANI) August 12, 2025 Chakraborty's comments come amid renewed tensions over the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. India had previously suspended the treaty following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people on April 22. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently announced that India would not be reactivating the historic agreement, stating that the treaty was for 'peace and progress,' which Pakistan had violated. This is not the first time Chakraborty has been at the centre of controversy for his inflammatory statements. In 2024, he faced a police complaint for a speech where he allegedly said, 'We will chop them (up) and bury them in the ground.' He has also been a vocal critic of the West Bengal government, calling for the imposition of President's Rule in the state following alleged incidents of political violence.

Record Surge! Mutual funds attract nearly ₹50 lakh crore in 5 years

While Indian equities have been weighed down by substantial US tariffs, modest Q1 earnings, and sustained selling by overseas investors, domestic retail investors have maintained their confidence in the fundamentals of the economy, shrugging off these near-term headwinds as they pump record funds into mutual funds in July. As per the data released by AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds of India) on Monday, August 11, equity fund categories witnessed the highest-ever monthly net inflow of ₹ 42,702 crore, aided by renewed interest in thematic and sectoral schemes and continued inflow into small-cap, mid-cap, and flexi-cap schemes. Besides small- and mid-cap funds, large-cap funds saw net inflows of ₹ 2,125 crore, underscoring retail investors' interest in these schemes amid the sharp market correction in recent months. The monthly net inflow marked the 53rd consecutive month of gains, indicating that investors have been steadily pouring in money since February 2021. Additionally, healthy growth was witnessed in SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) inflow at ₹ 28,464 crore during the month, an increase from ₹ 27,269 crore in June. These record inflows have helped cushion the Indian stock market against the impact of sharp overseas investor outflows. Apart from equity funds, debt funds recorded a strong net inflow of ₹ 1.06 lakh crore in July, as investors diversified away from bank fixed deposits, which have turned less attractive following multiple RBI rate cuts. Amid strong inflows into both equity and debt, the total assets under management (AUM) of mutual fund industry crossed ₹ 75 lakh crore for the first time in July, reaching ₹ 75.35 lakh crore. Just half a decade ago, the mutual fund industry's AUM stood was at ₹ 27.11 lakh crore, indicating an addition of ₹ 48.24 lakh crore in only five years, AMFI data showed. Looking further back, the AUM of the Indian mutual fund industry has increased more than sixfold in the past 10 years. The industry first crossed the milestone of ₹ 10 lakh crore in May 2014, and in just about three years, the AUM more than doubled to ₹ 20 lakh crore by August 2017. The AUM crossed ₹ 30 lakh crore in November 2020 and has since tripled. Meanwhile, equity mutual fund AUM has surged from ₹ 7.37 lakh crore to ₹ 33.27 lakh crore in the last five years, a remarkable growth of 351% and it now accounts 46% of the overall mutual fund industry's AUM. Retail investors have been actively shifting their savings from traditional bank deposits to equities in recent years, aiming to participate in India's growth story, with the majority opting for the mutual fund route to gain ownership in listed companies. This participation has not only broadened the investor base but also provided a strong foundation for the market, encouraging many companies to raise funds through the stock market to capitalize on ongoing domestic demand. This process has expanded the overall size of the Indian stock market, with India becoming fourth largest stock market globally. According to market experts, institutional inflows into the Indian stock market are expected to remain strong through the rest of 2025, led by higher participation from the retail segment, higher understanding of market volatility, and rising investment discipline, along with incrementally higher inflow from B-30 cities, said domestic brokerage firm InCred Equities. "We remain optimistic over the mid- to long-term horizon amid improving geographic penetration as well as the rising popularity of mutual fund schemes, mainly among the young and mid-income investors," said InCred. Parliament clears twin bills to reform sports administration, doping oversight; move paves way to win 2036 Olympic

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, marking a watershed moment in India's legislative efforts to overhaul its sports administration and enhancing chances to win the bid for the Olympic 2036. The Bills, already cleared by the Lok Sabha, were moved by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who described them as transformative instruments aimed at promoting ethical governance, athlete welfare, and institutional accountability across the country's sporting landscape. The debate in the House was briefly disrupted when Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge attempted to raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls. Sasmit Patra, who was in the Chair, expunged Kharge's remarks following an intervention by Leader of the House J.P. Nadda, ruling them unrelated to the legislative business at hand. Subsequently, members of the Opposition staged a walkout. Among the most poignant interventions came from Olympian P.T. Usha, nominated member and President of the Indian Olympic Association, who recalled her near-podium finish at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. 'I missed the bronze by one-hundredth of a second. My heart broke not for myself, but for an entire generation of Indian athletes who had the strength and courage, but not the system,' she said. 'This Bill is not just about governance - it is about justice and fair play.' Prafull Patel of the NCP (Maharashtra) said, 'Every athlete's voice will now be heard,' adding that the proposed tribunal would ensure speedy resolution of disputes. He noted that the reforms in the Bill would help India realise its Olympic ambitions, including the bid for the 2036 Games. 'Every single sports federation is mired in legal cases. Courts take their own time. This tribunal will change that,' he said, also highlighting the Bill's mandate for women's representation in sports federations. Ayodhya Rama Reddy Alla of the YSR Congress Party welcomed the Bill's clarity and its promise of a unified framework for national and regional sports federations. Other members who spoke in support included Dr. Parmar Janswantsinh Salamsinh Jhala of the BJP (Gujarat), Sana Satish Babu of the TDP - who also serves as Secretary of the Andhra Cricket Association - Ravi Chandra Vaddiraju of the BRS (Telangana), Dhananjay Bhimrao Mahadik of the BJP (Maharashtra), Narhari Amin of the BJP (Gujarat), who delivered his remarks in Gujarati, Bhubneshwar Kalita of the BJP (Assam), Seema Dwivedi of the BJP (Uttar Pradesh), and Maya Naroliya of the BJP (Madhya Pradesh). The House also passed the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks to align India's anti-doping framework with global standards set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The amendment ensures operational independence for the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), addressing earlier concerns over government interference. It removes oversight powers previously granted to the National Anti-Doping Board, reinforcing NADA's autonomy in investigations, enforcement, and adjudication. The Sports Governance Bill seeks to establish a unified legal framework for the development and promotion of sports, rooted in the principles of fair play, transparency, and international best practices. It aligns with the Olympic and Paralympic Charters and introduces a National Sports Board to regulate and recognise sports federations. The Board will have powers to de-recognise federations for election irregularities, financial opacity, or failure to publish audited accounts. Crucially, the Bill also provides for the creation of a specialised National Sports Tribunal, chaired by a sitting or former Supreme Court judge, to adjudicate disputes related to athlete selection, governance, and federation elections. Tribunal decisions will be appealable only in the Supreme Court, offering athletes a faster and more specialised route to justice. With both Bills now cleared by Parliament, India moves decisively toward building a transparent, accountable, and globally competitive sports ecosystem - one that promises not only medals but dignity, fairness, and institutional support for every athlete. After Minister Mandaviya's motion to pass the Bill, Surendra Singh Nagar considered the proposal, and the Bill was passed without any protest from the Opposition, through a voice vote.
