‘BrahMos chalega': Mithun Chakraborty's fiery retort to Pakistan's Bilawal Bhutto's ‘threat of war' amid tensions around Indus Waters Treaty

Indian Express15 hours ago
In a sharp reaction to Pakistan's Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's reported comments on the Indus Waters Treaty, BJP leader and veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty issued a fiery warning. The actor-turned-politician's remarks came after Bhutto reportedly stated, 'If Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces an attack on the Indus River, he will be attacking our history, culture and civilization… The people of Pakistan have the strength to confront Modi in case of war.' Bhutto also reportedly warned that in the event of another war, Pakistan would 'restore all its six rivers'.
Zardari was formerly Pakistan's 37th Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2022 to 2023.
Chakraborty responded by saying: 'Agar aisi baatein karte rahenge aur hamari khopdi sanak gayi toh phir ek ke baad ek BrahMos chalega (If you keep talking like this and we lose our minds, then one BrahMos after the other will be launched)… After that, we will open the dam, and a tsunami will occur. I have nothing against the people of Pakistan. I have said all of this to (Bhutto).'
He had started his comment in a soft tone: 'I don't want to say anything against the country of Pakistan. People of Pakistan are good, they also don't want war.'

Chakraborty's comments come amid renewed tensions over the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. India had previously suspended the treaty following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people on April 22. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently announced that India would not be reactivating the historic agreement, stating that the treaty was for 'peace and progress,' which Pakistan had violated.
This is not the first time Chakraborty has been at the centre of controversy for his inflammatory statements. In 2024, he faced a police complaint for a speech where he allegedly said, 'We will chop them (up) and bury them in the ground.' He has also been a vocal critic of the West Bengal government, calling for the imposition of President's Rule in the state following alleged incidents of political violence.

Opposition demands action against Israeli ambassador for ‘unacceptable' response to Priyanka Gandhi

The Opposition parties on Tuesday criticised the Israeli ambassador's response to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's social media post about the 'genocide' in Gaza, and demanded action against the diplomat. On Tuesday, Vadra posted on social media platform X that Israel had ' murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children' in the besieged Palestinian territory since the conflict between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian militant group Hamas started in October 2023. '[Israel] has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions,' the Wayanad MP said. Vadra said that 'enabling these crimes by silence and inaction' was a crime in itself. 'It is shameful that the Indian government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine,' she added. India's longstanding position has been to support a two-state solution for establishing a sovereign, viable and independent state of Palestine within recognised and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace. Responding to the Congress leader, Israeli ambassador Reuven Azar said that 'what is shameful is [Vadra's] deceit ', claiming that his country's military had killed 25,000 members of Hamas. 'The terrible cost in human lives derives from Hamas' heinous tactics of hiding behind civilians, their shooting of people trying to evacuate or receive assistance and their rocket fire,' Azar said on social media. The Israeli diplomat added that Tel Aviv had facilitated two million tonnes of food into Gaza 'while Hamas tries to sequestrate them, thereby creating hunger'. The population of Gaza had grown 450% in the last 50 years, Azar claimed, adding that there was 'no genocide there'. 'Don't buy Hamas numbers,' he said. The Congress said that it condemns the words used by the Israeli ambassador in response to the 'pain and anguish' expressed by Vadra. 'We do and find it totally unacceptable,' the party's communication in charge Jairam Ramesh said. Ramesh added: 'It is too much to expect the Modi government, which has shown extreme moral cowardice when it comes to speaking out on Israel's destruction of Gaza over the past 18-20 months, to take serious exception and objection to the ambassador's response.' Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said that she hopes that the Ministry of External Affairs reprimands the Israeli ambassador. The Rajya Sabha MP said that she had wanted to move a privilege motion against the Polish ambassador in 2022 for his social media post allegedly attacking her, but had decided not to raise it after a discussion with the external affairs minister. 'However this is emboldening them to speak to Indian parliamentarians in this tone and tenor while in our own country,' said Chaturvedi. 'This is unacceptable.' Israel's military offensive in Gaza began in October 2023 after Hamas killed 1,200 persons during its incursion into southern Israel and took hostages. Israel has been carrying out unprecedented air and ground strikes on Gaza since then, leaving more than 61,000 persons dead. Tel Aviv has also enforced a blockade on humanitarian aid, which the United Nations say has brought the population to the verge of famine. Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks since July 6. Earlier efforts to reinstate a brief ceasefire that took effect in January had stalled due to major disagreements between the two sides.

Durai Vaiko meets Ambassador Alipov over reports on forced conscription of Indians into Russian Army

CHENNAI: MDMK principal secretary Durai Vaiko has urged Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov to intervene urgently over reports of Indian nationals, including students, being forcibly conscripted into the Russian military. Durai personally handed over a letter to the envoy at his Delhi office. In his letter, Durai cited the case of Tamil Nadu medical student Kishore Saravanan, allegedly taken from Mariupol training to the warfront, and said he is also representing families of 14 other missing Indians. 'These cases suggest that thousands of Indians may have been forced into the war,' he said. Quoting official data, he noted that 31,444 Indian students were in Russia in 2024, including 2,000 from Tamil Nadu, and warned that such incidents could create fear among students and families. In a statement later, Durai said the deputy ambassador assured him that the Russian government does not engage in such activities, attributing such acts to intermediaries in both countries. He added that the envoy confirmed receiving a formal request from the Ministry of External Affairs to secure Kishore's release, and that action is underway.

Indian Ports Bill, a much-needed step towards port development: MP

Visakhapatnam: Highlighting the role of maritime infrastructure in India's economic growth, Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat on Tuesday extended his support to the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, during a discussion in Parliament. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, the MP termed the bill as a much-needed step towards streamlining port development, improving ease of doing business, ensuring effective dispute resolution and creating a unified framework for port identification and regulation across the country. Representing a coastal state with over 1,000-km of shoreline, the MP noted the significant progress Andhra Pradesh made in the port sector in the past decade. 'The turnaround time for ships at major ports has halved and India's international shipment ranking has risen sharply,' he mentioned. Attributing credit to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's maritime vision and plan to establish a themed port every 50-km along the coast, the MP emphasised it would be a major driver of regional growth. About the recently-concluded conclave in Visakhapatnam, attended by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and representatives from seven Bay of Bengal nations, the MP described it as a testament to the state's growing prominence in international maritime cooperation. 'Andhra Pradesh is already emerging as a leader in cruise tourism, with successful cruise operations and more in the pipeline,' he highlighted. On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Indian Ports Bill, 2025 by voice vote amid protests by the Opposition. The bill proposes modernising the port governance in the country, boosting maritime trade and India's stand as a global maritime leader.
