Opposition demands action against Israeli ambassador for ‘unacceptable' response to Priyanka Gandhi
On Tuesday, Vadra posted on social media platform X that Israel had ' murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children' in the besieged Palestinian territory since the conflict between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian militant group Hamas started in October 2023.
'[Israel] has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions,' the Wayanad MP said.
Vadra said that 'enabling these crimes by silence and inaction' was a crime in itself. 'It is shameful that the Indian government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine,' she added.
India's longstanding position has been to support a two-state solution for establishing a sovereign, viable and independent state of Palestine within recognised and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace.
Responding to the Congress leader, Israeli ambassador Reuven Azar said that 'what is shameful is [Vadra's] deceit ', claiming that his country's military had killed 25,000 members of Hamas.
'The terrible cost in human lives derives from Hamas' heinous tactics of hiding behind civilians, their shooting of people trying to evacuate or receive assistance and their rocket fire,' Azar said on social media.
The Israeli diplomat added that Tel Aviv had facilitated two million tonnes of food into Gaza 'while Hamas tries to sequestrate them, thereby creating hunger'.
The population of Gaza had grown 450% in the last 50 years, Azar claimed, adding that there was 'no genocide there'. 'Don't buy Hamas numbers,' he said.
The Congress said that it condemns the words used by the Israeli ambassador in response to the 'pain and anguish' expressed by Vadra.
'We do and find it totally unacceptable,' the party's communication in charge Jairam Ramesh said.
Ramesh added: 'It is too much to expect the Modi government, which has shown extreme moral cowardice when it comes to speaking out on Israel's destruction of Gaza over the past 18-20 months, to take serious exception and objection to the ambassador's response.'
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said that she hopes that the Ministry of External Affairs reprimands the Israeli ambassador.
The Rajya Sabha MP said that she had wanted to move a privilege motion against the Polish ambassador in 2022 for his social media post allegedly attacking her, but had decided not to raise it after a discussion with the external affairs minister.
'However this is emboldening them to speak to Indian parliamentarians in this tone and tenor while in our own country,' said Chaturvedi. 'This is unacceptable.'
Israel's military offensive in Gaza began in October 2023 after Hamas killed 1,200 persons during its incursion into southern Israel and took hostages. Israel has been carrying out unprecedented air and ground strikes on Gaza since then, leaving more than 61,000 persons dead.
Tel Aviv has also enforced a blockade on humanitarian aid, which the United Nations say has brought the population to the verge of famine.
Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks since July 6. Earlier efforts to reinstate a brief ceasefire that took effect in January had stalled due to major disagreements between the two sides.

The Election Commission had directed Gandhi to give a written declaration on his claims.

16 BSF personnel awarded gallantry medals for Operation Sindoor
Sixteen Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been awarded gallantry medals for their exceptional bravery during Operation Sindoor, in which they shot down enemy drones, rescued injured comrades, supplied ammunition under fire, destroyed Pakistani posts and surveillance equipment along the border. According to the citation, six personnel—Assistant Commandant Abhishek Srivastav, Head Constable Brij Mohan Singh, and Constables Bhupendra Bajpai, Rajan Kumar, Basavaraja Shivappa Sunkada, and Depeswar Barman—displayed exemplary courage under direct enemy assault. After the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor, Pakistani forces positioned barely 200 meters from the Kharkhola post initiated heavy shelling using flat and high-trajectory weapons, followed by a drone attack. 'In the early hours of May 10, 2025, multiple Pakistani drones were spotted in the area. Upon hearing the humming sound, the troops took defensive positions. Under the command of Sub-Inspector Mohd Imtiyaz, they successfully neutralised one drone. However, a mortar shell—likely dropped by another drone—exploded just outside their bunker, causing serious injuries to Head Constable Brij Mohan Singh and four constables,' the citation stated. Apart from Singh, another constable, Deepak Chimngakham, was also killed in action at the border during the Indo-Pak hostilities. Another medal recipient, assistant sub-inspector Udai Vir Singh, was posted at the Jabowal border outpost in the Jammu sector when it came under heavy assault from Pakistani forces. 'Amid intense enemy fire, ASI Singh destroyed a Pakistani surveillance camera, denying them real-time monitoring of Indian positions. Even after sustaining a life-threatening shrapnel wound to his upper lip from heavy machine gun fire, he refused evacuation and continued to engage the enemy, ultimately neutralising their HMG nest,' the citation read. 'His actions ensured uninterrupted domination by Indian forces and inspired fellow troops.' Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajappa B.T. and Constable Manohar Xalxo were also honoured for their bravery in resupplying ammunition to frontline troops at Karotana Khurd, Karotana Forward, and Suchetagarh border outposts. These posts had come under intense 82mm mortar and machine gun fire from Pakistan. 'On May 10 at 0740 hrs, BOP Karotana Khurd reported a critical shortage of AGS ammunition. ASI Rajappa sustained fatal splinter injuries, and CT Xalxo was wounded in his right hand. Despite their injuries, both completed the mission successfully,' the citation stated. Assistant Commandant Alok Negi was recognised for leading his troops during a prolonged engagement at the forward defence line at Mukhyari between May 7 and 10. His leadership ensured operational dominance and sustained retaliatory strikes for over 48 hours, using mortars and other heavy weapons. Apart from securing the border, BSF troops during Operation Sindoor bombed terror launchpads such as Looni and Dhandhar in Pakistan, destroyed posts of Pakistan Rangers, and also neutralised terrorists infiltrating into India using cover fire by Pak Rangers. In an official statement, the BSF said, 'This Independence Day, 16 brave Seema Praharis are being awarded Gallantry Medals for their conspicuous bravery and unmatched valour. Their resolute and steadfast actions during Operation Sindoor are a testament to the nation's faith and trust reposed in India's First Line of Defence.' In response to India's Operation Sindoor, Pakistan launched drones and loitering munitions against Indian military installations and civilian infrastructure, but failed to inflict any damage as the threats were thwarted by India's robust multi-layered air defence network.

World Will Listen To Us If We Become Strong In All Sectors: Nitin Gadkari
Nagpur: Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday pitched for making India a superpower and " vishwaguru", saying the world would certainly listen to India if it becomes strong in every sector. The Road Transport and Highways Minister was addressing a gathering at a programme to mark 'Akhand Bharat Sankalp Din' organised by the Rashtra Nirman Samiti (social organisation) in Nagpur. "We recall this day because on this day in 1947, the country was divided into two - India and Pakistan. We all, as a mission, accept that our country's partition was unnatural, and one day, our country will become ' akhand ' (unified). This is the resolve we take today in this programme," he said. Mr Gadkari praised India's unity in diversity and also lauded the country's armed forces. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has resolved to make India a 5 trillion-dollar economy, the third-largest economy in the world, as well as " atmanirbhar" and " vishwaguru", he noted, adding all these resolutions will be achieved with the efforts of every Indian. "If we become strong in every sector, then certainly the world will listen to us. Those who are strong in economics, defence, science and technology and those who are progressing in agriculture and business, and a country whose citizens are patriots and cultured, that country can only become vishwaguru," he said. Mr Gadkari praised the Rashtra Nirman Samiti for invoking the thought of "Akhand Bharat" among the people. "When we are taking the resolution for 'Akhand Bharat' today, we should also resolve to make a superpower country which is progressive, prosperous and powerful," he said. Mr Gadkari also raised concerns over road accidents, and underlined the importance of creating awareness among the youth about following the road safety rules.
