Indian Ports Bill, a much-needed step towards port development: MP
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, the MP termed the bill as a much-needed step towards streamlining port development, improving ease of doing business, ensuring effective dispute resolution and creating a unified framework for port identification and regulation across the country.
Representing a coastal state with over 1,000-km of shoreline, the MP noted the significant progress Andhra Pradesh made in the port sector in the past decade. 'The turnaround time for ships at major ports has halved and India's international shipment ranking has risen sharply,' he mentioned. Attributing credit to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's maritime vision and plan to establish a themed port every 50-km along the coast, the MP emphasised it would be a major driver of regional growth.
About the recently-concluded conclave in Visakhapatnam, attended by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and representatives from seven Bay of Bengal nations, the MP described it as a testament to the state's growing prominence in international maritime cooperation. 'Andhra Pradesh is already emerging as a leader in cruise tourism, with successful cruise operations and more in the pipeline,' he highlighted. On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Indian Ports Bill, 2025 by voice vote amid protests by the Opposition. The bill proposes modernising the port governance in the country, boosting maritime trade and India's stand as a global maritime leader.

NMC Commissioner Flags Off Traffic Park Renovation Work
Nagpur: Municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhary on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the renovation of the Gyanyogi Dr Shrikant Jichkar Children's Traffic Park. The project is being undertaken through Union minister Nitin Gadkari's MPLAD (Members of Parliament Local Area Development) Fund. Renovation plans include construction of a shed for the application acceptance centre, asphalting of existing roads, installation of traffic direction indicators and signboards, and thermoplastic painting for zebra crossings and lane markings. Pedestrian paths on both sides of the internal roads will be repaired and levelled, while model structures representing schools, clinics, banks/ATMs, and government offices will be set up to create a realistic traffic learning environment. Social organisation Jan Aakrosh will conduct traffic safety training for students from various city schools at the park. Chaudhary thanked Gadkari for supporting the park's redevelopment and lauded Jan Aakrosh for its long-standing efforts in traffic safety education. He assured that the NMC would ensure quality work and extend all necessary support. Jan Aakrosh president Prakash Khandekar emphasised that instilling proper traffic discipline in young minds would yield long-term benefits for road safety. Secretary Ravindra Kaskhedikar outlined the group's awareness initiatives. Deputy municipal commissioner Ganesh Rathod, executive engineer Kamlesh Chavan, deputy engineer Sachin Chamate, and Jan Aakrosh office-bearers, including vice-president Anil Joshi, were present. Amaravati: AICC in-charge for Andhra Pradesh Manickam Tagore on Wednesday hit back at former Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy after he alleged that Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is in touch with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu through hotline. The Congress MP said that the people of Andhra Pradesh know that Chandrababu Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Jagan and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan are together. Tagore also told Jagan that Rahul Gandhi has not surrendered to Modi and Shah like him. He dared Jagan to join the Congress party's fight against 'vote chori'. He said instead of appreciating Rahul Gandhi for the fight to protect democracy, Jagan gave his own imaginary stories. At a press conference in Amaravti on Wednesday, Jagan ruled out support to the Congress party's fight against 'vote chori'. Questioning the silence of Rahul Gandhi on the 'vote chori' issue raised by YSRCP after last year's elections, Jagan alleged that Chandrababu Naidu was in touch with Rahul Gandhi through Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. "Why didn't join us when we raised a similar issue after the 2024 elections, where there was a variation of 12 percent between the votes polled and counted," asked Jagan Mohan Reddy. The YSRCP chief also questioned Rahul Gandhi's silence on what he called the corruption of TDP-led coalition government. "Congress spokesperson Manickam Tagore criticizes only me, as Chandrababu Naidu is in touch with Rahul Gandhi through a hotline, or else how can he show a blind eye on the corruption of the coalition government with the mushrooming of belt shops, permit rooms, and selling liquor at more than MRP," he asked. In a video statement posted on 'X', Manickam Tagore said Rahul Gandhi was not fighting for Congress alone but he was fighting for democracy. "He has surrendered to (Amit) Shah and he is not afraid of Modi like Jagan. We are fighting the battle against HM Shah and PM Modi to protect India's democratic rights," the Congress MP said. He alleged that in 39 to 48 Lok Sabha constituencies, Amit Shah organised manipulation with the Election Commissioners He said Rahul Gandhi was embarking on yatra in Bihar on the issue of SIR to protect people's right to vote. "Jagan must have minimum courtesy to acknowledge and appreciate work of Rahul Gandhi instead of finding fault and giving his own imaginary stories about Babu and other stories," he said. Tagore said if Jagan has guts to fight against Modi and Shah, he should join the march to be led by state Congress president Y. S. Sharmila on August 14 in Vijayawada. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary also reacted to Jagan's remark saying their only true 'hotline' is with the people of Andhra Pradesh. "Forget your 'vote chori' excuses - you were voted out because people were tired of your 'note chori' in scam after scam. Delhi's Big Step To Clean Up Yamuna - A Rs 917-Crore Plan Approved
New Delhi: In a significant step toward cleaning the Yamuna, the Delhi Jal Board has approved projects worth Rs 917 crore to boost the capital's sewage treatment capacity by 51.5 million gallons per day. The move is expected to sharply reduce the flow of untreated water into the river, one of the biggest contributors to its pollution. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier directed the Delhi government to nearly double its sewage treatment capacity to 1,500 million gallons per day by 2028 as part of the ongoing efforts to clean the river. Major Upgrades at Yamuna Vihar and Keshopur The largest expansion will take place at Yamuna Vihar, where the capacity of the existing sewage treatment plant will rise from 25 MGD to 40 MGD. Alongside this, a new 15 MGD plant will be built on the site. At Keshopur, the current 12 MGD facility will be upgraded to 18 MGD. South Delhi Plants to Get a Boost Five sewage plants in South Delhi will also see capacity upgrades under the new plan, further strengthening the city's wastewater management network. Long-Term Operations & Maintenance Each project will include operations and maintenance for 11-12 years, ensuring sustained efficiency and compliance with environmental norms. A Cleaner Yamuna in Sight? Officials say the expanded infrastructure will significantly cut the volume of untreated sewage entering the Yamuna, a problem that has plagued the river for decades. Environmental experts have welcomed the move, noting that sustained investment in sewage treatment is critical to reviving the Yamuna's ecosystem and improving water quality for communities living along its banks. Cleaning the Yamuna has long been one of the BJP-led Delhi government's big promises, framed as both an environmental necessity and a public health goal. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma have repeatedly said the river's revival will be a key test of their term in office.
