PIL against Tamil Nadu bills passed after Supreme Court ruling on Governor's powers
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Madras High Court challenging the 10 Amendment Acts passed after the Supreme Court verdict which declared Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi sitting on bills as 'illegal'.The amendments, for the first time, bypassed the Governor's approval, giving the State Government the power to appoint Vice Chancellors and making the Chief Minister the Chancellor of state-run universities, replacing the Governor.advertisementThe controversy began when the DMK-led State Government filed a case against the Governor in the Supreme Court, which ruled that the 10 re-passed Bills had received assent under Article 142.The Court further stated that the Governor does not have "pocket veto" powers and set a timeline of one to three months for the Governor to act on a Bill, depending on the three options provided.
The PIL, filed by K Venkatachalapathy, seeks to declare the 12th Amendment Act null and void. The petitioner argues that the amendments violate University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations, which mandate the Chancellor panel to appoint the Vice-Chancellor based on recommendations from a search panel. The petitioner also questions the ambiguity around the term 'Government' in the Acts, asking whether it refers to the Assembly, Cabinet, or Executive Head of the Government.advertisementJustice GR Swaminathan and Justice V Lakshmi admitted the petition and have ordered the State and Central Governments to make their submissions by next week. The matter is scheduled for hearing on May 21st.

Thousands of 'untainted' schoolteachers in West Bengal wrote to President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday seeking the restoration of their jobs. 'We should not have to appear for fresh exams when we did not
Kolkata Thousands of 'untainted' schoolteachers in West Bengal wrote to President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday seeking the restoration of their jobs. 'We should not have to appear for fresh exams when we did not take part in any unfair practices or corruption. Why are we being subjected to this ordeal?' said Payel Dutta, an 'untainted' teacher. She and her fellow protesters were seen signing the letters from the footpaths in Salt Lake, Kolkata, where they have been protesting for the past 34 days demanding the restoration of their jobs. The situation follows the April 3 Supreme Court order upholding a Calcutta High Court decision to cancel the recruitment of nearly 26,000 teachers and non-teaching employees in the State-run schools due to irregularities in the 2016 selection process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission. The apex court subsequently allowed the 'untainted' teachers to continue working until year-end. On April 24, the State government released lists of 'untainted' teachers. The top court asked the 'untainted' candidates, many of whom have seven to eight years of experience, to appear for fresh exams for reinstatement. 'I earnestly and solemnly appeal to you, the head of the state and the highest constitutional authority... That I be spared from this punishment,' read the common draft of the letter. In the event their request was turned down, the teachers sought permission for 'voluntary euthanasia' for themselves and their family members. The teachers also urged Ms. Murmu to issue a directive 'for a fair reconsideration of the judgment that has deprived us of our rightful livelihood'. PM Modi's 11-year tenure is 'Amritkal': Tripura CM Manik Saha
Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 10 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha today described Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 11-year tenure as 'Amritkal', attributing the period to significant strides in development, trust, and transformational change across India. 'Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the state government is also prioritising development and innovation. During Prime Minister Modi's tenure, around 25 crore people in the country have risen above the poverty line,' Saha said. He was addressing a press conference at the Bharatiya Janata Party's state office in Krishnanagar, Agartala, held to mark the completion of 11 years of the BJP-led NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Highlighting the Prime Minister's political journey, Dr. Saha said, 'Before assuming leadership of the country, Narendra Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for more than 13 years and transformed it into a model state. After becoming Prime Minister in 2014, he took decisive steps for national development. Over these 11 years, the nation has steadily progressed. Today, people across India and the world recognise--'Modi ji hai to sab mumkin hai'. We have never seen a Prime Minister like him.' The Chief Minister further said that PM Modi's governance focuses on Seva Sushasan and Garib Kalyan. 'From the economically weaker sections to the most marginalised individuals, he has worked to address basic problems and uplift socio-economic conditions. The government's dedication to building a developed India under his leadership is truly commendable,' he added. Saha also spoke about the recent North East Investors Summit held in Delhi, attended by Prime Minister Modi. 'PM Modi clearly stated that India cannot be fully developed until the North East is developed. In the past, fear of terrorism kept people away from this region. But now, the Prime Minister has renamed the North East and Sikkim as Ashtalakshmi, giving special attention to this region's development. Under his leadership, around 11 to 12 agreements have been signed to restore peace and stability in the region,' he said. The Chief Minister also referred to the Prime Minister's monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, which is aired on the last Sunday of every month to connect directly with the public. 'Through Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister brings important national issues to the forefront. Before 2014, there were serious concerns about the country's future--corruption, scams, and nepotism were widespread, and Tripura was no exception. But now, we have moved past those issues,' Saha concluded. The press conference was attended by the BJP state president and MP Rajya Sabha Rajib Bhattacharjee, general secretary Bipin Debbarma, and Chief spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty. (ANI)

AP: YSRCP women leaders protest in Nellore over
Nellore (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 10 (ANI): YSRCP women leaders held a massive protest in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, alleging rising incidence of atrocities on women under the TDP-led government in the State. They raised slogans against the government, expressing their strong opposition. District Women's Wing President Lakshmi Sunanda stated that since the coalition government came to power, many innocent women have been subjected to atrocities. She alleged that the government has failed to provide protection to women. 'Despite having a woman as the Home Minister, incidents of crimes against women continue to occur every day. We want the state government to take immediate action against the attacks on women,' Sunanda said. Meanwhile, YSRCP President and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has strongly condemned the arrest of senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao and the 'organised' attacks on Sakshi media offices across the state, calling it a deliberate and orchestrated assault on democracy. In a statement posted on X, Jagan said that Chandrababu Naidu is twisting and misrepresenting words that Kommineni never said, just to implicate him and justify an unlawful arrest falsely. He alleged that as part of a pre-planned conspiracy, TDP-led mobs have vandalised Sakshi unit offices in several districts under the guise of protecting women's dignity. 'This is nothing but a political vendetta masked as concern for women,' Jagan stated. Referring to past remarks by Chandrababu and his brother-in-law, Jagan questioned their moral standing. 'You once asked whether a daughter-in-law prefers her mother-in-law over her husband. Your brother-in-law even said that when you see a girl, you should either kiss her or make her are your standards when it comes to respecting women,' he said. Jagan accused Chandrababu of completely failing to provide safety and justice to women and girls since returning to power. He highlighted the tragic case of Tanmayi, an intermediate student from Anantapur who went missing and was later found brutally murdered, with 'no swift action taken by authorities'. He also pointed to the horrifying case in Ramagiri mandal of Sri Sathya Sai district, where a 9th class girl was blackmailed and raped by 14 men for six months, yet police did not act on her complaint due to fear tactics and negligence. 'In just one year of TDP rule, 188 women and girls were raped, and 15 of them were murdered after the assault. Hundreds of cases of harassment and violence have gone unpunished,' Jagan said, calling it a complete breakdown of law and order. He also said that the TDP regime has destroyed education, healthcare, agriculture, and public safety. 'You gave fake promises like 'Super Six' and 'Super Seven' to win votes, but once in power, you betrayed every single promise. People now see you as a failed, corrupt, and incompetent Chief Minister.' YS Jagan concluded by saying that to escape accountability, Chandrababu is using fake news factories and media manipulation to spread lies and divert attention. 'Your diversion politics won't work forever, Chandrababu garu. People are watching, and they will hold you accountable.' (ANI) .
