Edwyn Collins: ‘Could an Orange Juice reunion ever be on the cards? No!'

The Guardian06-03-2025

In these deeply troubled, fractured, febrile times, why did you call the new record Nation Shall Speak Unto Nation? smileywombatIt was Grace's choice [Grace Maxwell, his wife and musical collaborator]. Up in Helmsdale [in the Scottish Highlands], in my studio, I have an art deco radiogram speaker which has a sort of sunburst thing with that phrase written on it. For £60 on eBay – pristine! It was the BBC World Service motto. When we were casting about for a title for the new record, it seemed like a great expression. Grace said, if you're going to call it that you have to write a song with that title. So I did.
I very much enjoyed the new song Knowledge and the video, shot in Helmsdale. Do you like to travel much these days or are you pretty much happy at home? nogs09London is still my town. But I like Helmsdale, and Grace loves it. But when I was seven, eight years old, every holiday I spent in Helmsdale, walking with Stuart, my grandfather. And, one year, Mum and Dad said, I think we'll go to Spain. I said, you can go wherever you like – I'm going to Helmsdale. We've been abroad loads of times since I had the stroke [in 2005] – to Japan once, to Australia. But I love getting home to the studio. That fragrance of the air. The fresh air. It's beautiful.
The Possibilities Are Endless [the documentary about Collins's recovery from his stroke] is such a motivational and inspiring watch. How easy was it for you to put it out there for all to see? Aubrey26At the beginning, it was difficult to form my language. But you shouldn't hide any of it away. There's no point. I express myself and sometimes I get it wrong – the words, the meaning of things … So what? I am a private person, but with no shame.
Is your favourite song still Boredom [by Buzzcocks, namechecked on Orange Juice's Rip It Up]? James1968In the punk days, I liked the Sex Pistols, but particularly Subway Sect and Buzzcocks. I was obsessed with Pete Shelley. And then, years and years later, after my stroke, we were sitting in Inverness, and this guy came up to me and went: 'I don't know if you remember me. I'm John Maher. I was the drummer in Buzzcocks.' I said: 'I remember you, you were the handsome Buzzcock.' He came over from Harris [in the Outer Hebrides, where Maher now lives] and took all the photographs for the Badbea album. He's a great photographer. Still handsome.
Did you plan to break up Orange Juice on the evening of the miners' benefit show at Brixton Academy in January 1985? ChrisBartleyOrange Juice had come to an end. Polydor were dropping me and Zeke [Manyika, drummer] was busy with his solo career. It came to its own conclusion, really. So I said, I might as well say this will be Orange Juice's last gig. It was Grace's idea to play Rock and Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life) by Kevin Johnson. 'And Zeke followed me through London, through a hundred hotel rooms / Through a hundred record companies who didn't like my tunes.' There were people crying in the audience.
Would an Orange Juice reunion ever be on the cards? RattonRedNo!
I remember that you were quite caustic about other bands in interviews back in the 80s and 90s. Have you mellowed? Most of the bands you slagged off deserved it! 1234 RamonesBack then, every indie band was nasty about everybody. Nowadays, everybody's nice about everybody. Some of the people I've been horrible about are very, very lovely to me now. Then you meet people and they're really nice and you just feel like, what a wanker I am. I remember Pete Wylie from Wah! Heat. I said: 'Aren't you sort of like Abba?' And now we are good buddies.
I'm currently rereading Grace's memoir Falling and Laughing. It's even more inspiring second time around. Have you written songs about her? SalfordRed64Yes, I have. There's one called You're Better Than You Know on Hope and Despair. That's a lovely song. A song of encouragement. And then Graciously. That's about it.
When you first wrote and recorded A Girl Like You, did you have any inkling that it would be such a huge worldwide hit, or did its success take you by surprise? VerulamiumParkRangerVic Godard from Subway Sect, who sang backing vocals, said: 'Yes, that's the one, that's the No 1 single.' But, no, we didn't. It was obvious it was the single – but it didn't get playlisted. Much later, Mickie Most, the genius producer, said that occasionally there's a record you can bury under the Empire State Building that will still find a way out. High praise from Mickie. There was absolutely nothing you could do to that record to stop it. It was an unstoppable force. Even I couldn't mess that record up.
I love the fact that Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols is the drummer on the Gorgeous George LP. But a mate told me there were loads of other first-generation punks on that record. Can that be true? And do you still consider yourself a punk? frenteboqueronWell, Vic was on the record. And we have worked a lot with Dave Ruffy elsewhere, who was a Rut: 'Babylon's burning!' But I'm not a punk any more. I'm too old for that. I love punk records. I also love northern soul, soul, indie music. In my opinion, there are good records and bad records. And good records, I'll always love.
Will you be making music with Vic Godard again? GrahamCarrisgodPossibly. He's always running around like a maniac. So we'll pin him down and see if we can get him to come up and do some recording in Helmsdale. He's the best company.
Seventies Night, a song that you recorded with the late Mark E Smith, became a staple in my DJ sets. Mark was quite a character. Did you two get along in the studio? CoopertapesNot exactly! RIP, of course. The first time I worked with him he said: 'I'm not worthy, Edwyn.' Then he came back to our studio and terrified Seb, my sidekick. Poor Seb. Grace told him off and he said sorry – he could be very sweet. He also said: 'Right, I'm putting the nails in.' During that session, he sacked his entire group. But he ultimately had a nice person in him, a polite person.
I can't tell you how much I admire your strength, determination and fortitude to recover from a stroke. My question is: what inspires you to keep going? EducatedRitaIn hospital, even my pupils didn't react. It looked like curtains for me. But my doctor decided to operate. And I'm grateful. Even when I was unconscious, I felt I was fighting for my life. My dreams didn't die. There was wonderful satisfaction to come. Now, sometimes it's difficult for me to get about. Town is difficult, bumping into people. But I can walk to the tube with my son William; that's joyful.

Hollyoaks confirms dark Clare Devine twist as teens are chilled to the bone

Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Monday's (June 9) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on at 7pm. Clare Devine (Gemma Bissix) proved that she's just as evil as ever, delivering a bone-chilling threat to Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass), Frankie Osborne (Isabelle Smith) and Vicky Grant (Anya Lawrence). The legendary soap villain, who staged a historic comeback 'from the dead' earlier this month, tracked the teens down to 67 Christleton Terrace, determined to ensure they keep shtum about the details of their trafficking ordeal. Walking into the property in her signature red high heels, Clare removed pictures of Misbah Maalik (Harvey Virdi), Nancy Osborne (Jessica Fox) and Donny Clark (Louis Emerick) from her handbag, informing the trio that she has 'eyes and ears' everywhere. Frankie, Dillon and Vicky reeled in shock as Clare ordered them to keep quiet about her and Grace Black's (Tamara Wall) roles in their exploitation nightmare, otherwise she would make them – and their families – 'disappear.' The unsettling threat came just hours after Clare revealed to the village that she's alive and well – despite the fact that everyone who dwells in Hollyoaks believed her to be dead. It seems that living in the shadows has hardened Clare further, with the character having been pulling much of the strings of the trafficking operation. And her ruthlessness is something that Grace is set to find out the hard way, with Clare hellbent on revenge after she discovers her sister gave Tori back to the Blakes. Discussing what's to come, actress Gemma Bissix told Metro: 'Grace says she let Tori go to the shops on her own and the Blakes have just snatched her. 'I found the perfect 'blonzing' product for summer that rivals rhode'

'Blonzers' are on the rise for summer, and Mirror's shopping writer Grace tested out Refy's newest blush drop to see how it looked on the skin Popular beauty brand REFY is one of our favourites over here at the Mirror. From the popular Lip Sculpt to the Lash Sculpt mascara (loved by Molly-Mae by the way) and my personal favourite, the Brow Tint, Refy products never miss. And the brand has just extended its Cream Blush range with two new shades that are perfect for summer. The shades included are Rust, a deep, warm-toned burnt orange and Plum, a cool-toned deep berry. Thanks to Hailey Bieber sparking the berry-toned make-up trend, and her popular Toasted Teddy Pocket Blush from rhode, we're not surprised to see that orange and burgundy blush shades are on the rise. I'm a huge fan of orange and brown toned blushers that give that popular 'blonzed' or sunburnt look so I was so excited to see that REFY had launched these new shades. Refy Rust Cream Blush Review What I love most about REFY blushes is the smooth, buildable texture that melts into the skin and creates that natural sun-kissed flush, and this new Rust shade is no exception. I hate cream blushes that require you to work really hard with the formula, and luckily this blush is quite literally fool-proof. It glides efffortlessly onto the skin, especially when using the Refy Duo Brush to apply it. And priced at £16, it's a really wallet-friendly blush that only requries a little bit each time you use it. Creating that beautiful 'sunburnt' blush look that I aim for everytime I do my make-up, and this blush is really the shade of the summer. Although I've not personally tested out rhode's Toasted Teddy, it has that similar burnt terracotta tone that's so popular at the moment. I'm not the only fan of these cream blushes with Molly Mae raving about the shade Malaya. This is a cool dusty pink with neutral undertones, perfect if you like using a pink blush that's not overly bubblegum or coral pink and has more of a mauve-y depth to the shade. A few of my other favourite blushes that have that similar bronze-y feel includes the Morphe Cheek Thrills Multi Finish Face Trio Palette, a fairly new product but already a staple in my make-up bag and priced at £19. Plus the Nudestix Nudies All Over Face Matte Bronze, priced at £31.50, which I used as a blush rather than a bronzer.

Resident Evil Requiem trailer reveals release date and new main character

The game previously known only as Resident Evil 9 has finally been revealed and it features a deep cut reference to Resident Evil Outbreak. Summer Game Fest 2025 was a very low-key affair, with hardly any new AAA game reveals. There was still lots of interesting looking titles, such as Mortal Shell 2 and Stranger than Heaven, but the biggest title by far was Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem, aka Resident Evil 9. Technically, the game was announced last summer but nothing had been seen of it up till now and even the reveal trailer left a lot more questions than answers… except when it comes to the release date. Requiem will be out on February 27, just a few weeks before the franchise's 30th anniversary, and the new game is promising a shift in 'tone and gameplay', as well as a return to Racoon City. Capcom didn't detail what the changes would entail but rumours have long suggested the game will be ditching the first person view of the last couple of titles and going back to the traditional third person, over the shoulder view. That wasn't confirmed by the reveal, but it did seem to imply that. As for the tone, it's hard to say but it appeared to be more serious, when compared to the schlocky, more fantastical nature of Resident Evil Village. Resident Evil's ability to change and evolve is one of the secrets of its success but it was still nice to see the police station from Racoon City again, or at least what's left of if after the place got nuked at the end of Resident Evil 2. It was impossible to tell what's going on with the plot, but the trailer focused on new character Grace Ashcroft, a 'technical analyst' at the FBI whose mother seems to be Alyssa Ashcroft. If that doesn't ring a bell then don't worry, as she was only ever in the two Resident Evil Outbreak games – online co-op titles from the PlayStation 2 era, that weren't particularly successful (the first one wasn't even online in Europe). The trailer refers to Alyssa being killed in a hotel eight years earlier, which was not a part of Outbreak's story. As the trailer begins, Grace is writing a report on an 'unidentified disease' that has claimed a fourth victim, with Alyssa presumably being the fifth. It's hard to draw anything too conclusive from the rest of the trailer, but there's a new monster dropping down from the ceiling in one shot, a possible shot of a zombie at the end, and what looks like the Raincoat Killer from Deadly Premonition at one point. There's also a guy with an obviously evil voice, who could be Albert Wesker, who's describing someone – possibly Grace – as the 'chosen one'. Previous rumours have suggested that Leon S. Kennedy and/or Jill Valentine are the main playable characters in Requiem but there was no sign of that in the teaser. Rumours have also claimed the game will be open world but the trailer didn't even hint at that, although it didn't rule it out either. No doubt all that will be the subject of the next trailer, which is presumably coming relatively soon, given the game is due out in a little over eight months. There's a small possibility it could be at the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday but that's unlikely, as it wasn't at the State of Play on Wednesday and Capcom probably don't want to play favourites. The trailer confirms the game for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
