Surge of interest sees new brokerage segment make waves at Dubai International Boat Show 2025

Dubai, UAE: Beneath the gleaming towers of Dubai Marina, the second day of the 31st Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) unfolded with a hum of negotiations and the quiet confidence of buyers circling their next acquisition. Yet while superyachts and new launches continue to dominate the limelight, a fresh segment is emerging as a focal point this year: a dedicated brokerage track designed to help buyers navigate the world of pre-owned luxury vessels.
The globe's most distinguished maritime and lifestyle event, DIBS 2025 has carved out space for brokerage companies, including Burgess and Bush & Noble, to showcase a range of second-hand watercraft at varying price points, from close to US$160,000 to upwards of US$8 million. The shift reflects a maturing maritime economy in the Gulf, where as well as the traditional superyachts favoured by many of the emirate's record-high number of millionaire residents, an increasing number of buyers are looking beyond custom-built designs to more immediate opportunities.
Industry Giants Make Their Mark
The brokerage focus does not overshadow the steady drumbeat of major launches and industry milestones. Sunreef Yachts, backed by sporting luminaries such as Formula One icon Fernando Alonso and tennis legend Rafael Nadal, is set to debut its first UAE-built vessel, the Sunreef Ultima 55, tomorrow — further evidence of the Emirates' growing role in yacht manufacturing. 'Our shipyard in Ras Al Khaimah has been very busy building this yacht – the main reason we are participating at DIBS this year,' said Artur Poloczanski, PR Director at Sunreef. 'Those who come along on Friday evening will witness a little bit of Sunreef history – the first UAE-built Ultima 55.'
Another first sees yacht service provider Ocean 360 give a Middle East debut to the Pardo Yachts brand, which is showcasing its flagship models, the Pardo 38 and Pardo 43, this week. Marcello Veronesi, CEO of Cantiere del Pardo, said the Middle East 'holds strategic importance for Pardo Yachts' global expansion,' adding that partnering with Ocean 360 instilled 'confidence that this market will embrace our yachts' unparalleled quality and style.'
Meanwhile, Gulf Craft, a perennial presence at DIBS since the inaugural edition in 1992, is unveiling an unprecedented eight new models among the 18 vessels it is showcasing this week. The locally owned company revealed that its 2024 operations contributed Dh500 million to the UAE economy through the sale and export of 129 yachts, and it has expanded its workforce by 10 per cent – some 150 staff – across the past 12 months. With a new superyacht service centre, complete with a 600-tonne lift, set to open in Ajman by the middle of the year, the company expects to create a further 120 new jobs.
'Over the years, we have noted more and more yachts coming to the UAE,' said Mohammed Hussein AlShaali, Chairman at Gulfcraft. 'The country is becoming a hub and these yachts coming in need professional support. As a boat builder – a yacht builder – we can offer the professionalism, services, and support they are looking for.'
Elsewhere, OceanWorld's flagship brand, Sunseeker Gulf, continues to gain momentum with its 2,200-strong workforce and a portfolio soon to expand from 30-metre yachts to even larger superyachts, while SF Yachts is using DIBS as a launchpad for the regional premiere of its Prestige X70, as well as the Dubai launch of its Gran Turismo 36. Azimut, a regular fixture at the Dubai World Trade Centre-organised show since 2013, announced plans to deepen its regional footprint with five new offices opening this year: two in Dubai, plus locations in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait.
A Show Beyond the Water
Among the showstoppers is the Lamborghini 63, a vessel embodying the Italian automotive brand's performance and design ethos. This marks the first time a Lamborghini yacht has been showcased in the Middle East, offering visitors an opportunity to step aboard and see its nautical engineering up-close. The yacht's presence further cement's the show's reputation for attracting global heavyweights in the industry.
'The Italian Seagroup is the world's largest producer of superyachts over 50 metres and we're excited that they've partnered with us to bring the region's first Lamborghini yacht to the Dubai International Boat Show,' said Rainer Bhene, CEO of Behnemar Yachts. 'Both brands are committed to pushing boundaries and creating exceptional experiences, both on land and at sea.'
And there are more Lamborghinis on show at the traditional Supercar Avenue, which is drawing steady crowds with a striking lineup that this year includes a peppermint green Lamborghini Revuelto, ivory white Countach, and a charcoal black McLaren Speedtail. The nearby Dubai Police exhibition also features two branded jet skis, while the UAE's Victory Team proudly displays its UIM X-Cat World Championship trophy.
Food offerings reflected the cosmopolitan nature of the event, which is this year boasting exhibitors from some 60 countries, including eight debutants in the form of Croatia, Japan, Latvia, Luxembourg, Myanmar, Romania, Singapore, and Slovenia. Catering to the estimated 35,000 visitors expected over the show's five days, a wide selection of food options offer everything from Brazilian acai bowls to Arabic shawarma, truffle poutine to Greek tzatziki – a culinary landscape as diverse as the clientele walking the marina. Families, too, found plenty to keep their little ones entertained, with a dive pool and dedicated kids' club featuring giant Lego stations.

Experts stressed that degrees are no longer a golden ticket, rather, they are one of many tools in a candidate's toolkit. According to the survey conducted by Resume Genius involving 1,000 hiring managers in the United States, 52 per cent said that employees with Master's degrees perform no better than those with a bachelor's degree and two years of experience. In fact, 10 per cent said the performance was worse. Local educators and hiring experts are reporting a significant shift in mindset among employers, with a growing preference for candidates who bring hands-on experience and adaptable skillsets over traditional academic qualifications. 'Over the past decade, the perceived value of a Master's degree has undergone a significant transformation shaped by evolving labor market demands, technological disruption, and shifting societal expectations,' said Dr Adam Fenech, Provost at Canadian University Dubai. 'Traditionally seen as a marker of academic prestige and a pathway to career advancement, the Master's degree is now increasingly evaluated through a more pragmatic lens.' Educators like Dr Fenech are observing a surge in demand for micro-credentials, certifications, and modular learning. He explained that while traditional graduate programs still hold merit —particularly in cultivating integrative intelligence and ethical awareness — flexibility and real-world applicability have become critical to the educational value proposition. In the UAE, where high-growth sectors such as technology, healthcare, and engineering are booming, higher education institutions are retooling to meet the demand for skill-first education models. 'There is a clear shift from valuing traditional academic prestige to prioritising practical, skill-based credentials,' said Abdul Razzak, Manager of Career Services at BITS Pilani Dubai Campus. He noted that a 2023 LinkedIn report found 75 per cent of hiring managers now prioritise skills over formal degrees, while the World Economic Forum forecasts that over half of the global workforce will need reskilling by 2025. 'At our institute, the Practice School program offers students real-world industry exposure through structured internships, helping them build practical skills and workplace readiness. Meanwhile, the Career Services Department provides micro-certifications in high-demand areas such as AI, data analytics, PMP, Six Sigma, and cybersecurity—aligned with evolving industry needs. Together, these initiatives equip students with strong academic foundations and the hands-on skills essential for today's dynamic job market,' added Razzak. Industry professionals pointed out the UAE's dynamic and diverse workforce has also shaped how professionals approach postgraduate education. Degree not for prestige Education consultants say that students now pursue Master's degrees not to check a box for employers, but to realign their careers with market trends or gain access to broader industry networks. 'For instance, someone with a background in engineering might now opt for a Master's in data analytics or business strategy to realign with evolving market demands,' said Varun Jain, CEO of UniHawk. 'Similarly, professionals in finance may pursue an MBA after gaining a few years of experience, not just for academic growth, but for the networking opportunities, case study exposure, and industry insights such programmes offer.' In the private sector, recruiters see first-hand how employers are recalibrating their hiring strategies. 'From my experience in recruitment and what we see across industries, employers are weighing relevant experience much more heavily than academic qualifications,' said Aws Ismail, General Manager at Marc Ellis, Dubai. 'They're looking for plug and play talent… A Master's might help open doors or slightly distinguish a candidate's profile, but what really matters is a candidate's practical skills, mindset, and ability to use technology as an enabler." Echoing that sentiment, Nickie Wilson, Executive Director of Genie Recruitment, noted that very few clients specifically request candidates with Master's degrees. 'The only exception tends to be tech startups or VC-backed companies who occasionally request an MBA from a globally recognised institution. But overall most of our clients don't even require a bachelor's degree, let alone a Master's,' she said. 'Personally, I've always believed that pursuing a Master's should be a decision made later in life… Experience in most cases trumps education," she added.

As UAE residents gear up for the upcoming Eid Al Adha break, travel demand to Arab and regional destinations is soaring, as are ticket prices. According to Bharat Aidasani, Managing Partner at Pluto Travels, airfares to Arab destinations have surged by up to 60 per cent during the Eid Al Adha holiday period as demand continues to outpace supply. "Because of the peak season, people love to travel, especially in the summer and during holiday times like Eid," Aidasani said, highlighting a consistent rise in travel demand. According to Aidasani, prices for flights to these destinations have risen between 20 to 30 per cent, with peak-day travel costs increasing by as much as 40 to 60 per cent. 'Airlines also get geared up for Eid. They start additional flights and open new routes wherever demand rises.' Arab destinations remain in high demand. Egypt continues to attract many UAE residents, while Syria is witnessing a surge as Syrians living in the UAE return home to celebrate Eid. Lebanon remains a consistent favorite, and Saudi Arabia sees increased traffic due to Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. Praveen Choudhary from Al Saffron Travel and Tourism agrees and adds that Egypt and Morocco are among the Arab destinations with the highest surge in bookings this Eid. "We're seeing a major influx in Egypt visa applications during the holiday period," said Choudhary, noting a significant increase in demand from UAE residents and expats alike. Choudhary emphasised the importance of early booking to avoid steep price hikes. "If you book 40 to 45 days in advance, the price could be nearly half what it is now. For example, a ticket priced at Dh500 earlier might now be over Dh1,000." Zain Al Abdin, sales manager at Golden Eagle Travel & Tourism, added that airlines have ramped up operations to accommodate the surge. For example, 'Syrian Airlines used to be the only carrier flying to Syria, but now FlyDubai and Emirates are adding flights. Yet prices have increased by around 50 per cent,' Al Abdin said. Travellers who book last-minute tickets often face higher fares, especially for non-flexible or non-refundable ticket categories. 'About 90 per cent of the tickets people book are non-refundable,' he explained. With limited flexibility, travellers are often locked into dates set by public sector holidays. Different travel behaviours Compared to last Eid, bookings this year are strong but slightly lower. 'This is mainly due to the overlap of Eid holidays with school exams. Many families are delaying their travel until after Eid,' Al Abdin explained. Some families prefer spending the same budget on more extended post-Eid vacations rather than shorter, more expensive Eid getaways. 'A three-day Eid trip might cost Dh4,000 per person now. Some prefer to wait until after exams and spend Dh7,000 on a full summer trip instead,' he said. Travel after Eid is expected to be more affordable and appealing for long-haul trips. 'After Eid, prices will drop, especially for longer destinations like Europe, Russia, and northern Turkey,' he added. Looking at global destinations, Al Abdin pointed out that travelers prefer short-haul trips during Eid, such as Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Istanbul. "For long-haul destinations like Europe, Russia, North Turkey, Japan, Korea, or Norway, people wait for the summer holiday season."

The UAE Ministry of Economy granted its second collective music management licence to Music Nation during a ceremony held at its headquarters in Dubai. The licence authorises the organisation to manage the distribution of rights on behalf of music creators and performers, while also ensuring nationwide compliance among music platforms. It comes as the streaming market is tipped to hit $2.3bn by 2030 and musical artists and producers in the region look to monetise works. UAE music management The announcement was made during an event attended by Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, and Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Under-Secretary for Intellectual Property. The Ministry confirmed that the licence was issued in accordance with Federal Decree-Law No. 38 of 2021 concerning copyright and related rights. It marks the continuation of the Ministry's efforts to strengthen intellectual property frameworks in the UAE, following the first collective management licence awarded to the Emirates Music Rights Association in April 2025. Al Saleh said: 'Under the vision of our wise leadership, the UAE has placed strategic emphasis on enhancing the competitiveness of its cultural and creative industries, driving their growth both regionally and globally. 'Recognising their vital role in national economic growth, we are committed to fostering public-private collaboration to cultivate an enabling environment for talent and innovation. 'By elevating the creative economy's legislative framework to world-class standards, we aim to expand the private sector's participation in it, in line with the National Strategy for Cultural and Creative Industries 2031.' The Under-Secretary said: 'The Ministry remains committed to establishing a world-class copyright governance system, drawing on international best practices. We are achieving this through strengthening legal and regulatory frameworks, fostering investment in creative sectors, and implementing robust collective management systems. 'These measures safeguard intellectual property rights while building creators' trust in the nation's creative ecosystem.' 'The collective music management licence serves as a catalyst for cultural innovation while safeguarding artists' intellectual property rights. Through establishing transparent revenue distribution systems and fair compensation mechanisms, it elevates the UAE's music industry – enhancing its global competitiveness and positioning our nation as a premier hub for creative enterprises'. Al Saleh emphasised that awarding the licence to Music Nation marks a strategic milestone in the UAE's commitment to fostering creativity. The initiative unlocks new opportunities for artists, writers, and producers while strengthening rights protection and leveraging creative-economy tools – ultimately positioning the sector as a key driver of national economic growth. Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini said: 'Our music industry is witnessing remarkable growth, fuelled by an expanding ecosystem of creative enterprises and world-class events. Dubai alone boasts 350 live music venues, while the national streaming market generated $841.9m in 2024 – projected to nearly triple to $2.3bn by 2030. 'To sustain this momentum, the Ministry of Economy is prioritising robust legislative frameworks that will further catalyse the creative economy and foster artistic innovation. 'Building on last month's inaugural licence granted to the Emirates Music Rights Association, today marks another significant milestone with the official authorisation of Music Nation. 'We are actively collaborating with local and global partners, including industry associations and legal experts, to share best practices that drive sector growth. 'In tandem, we're expanding awareness initiatives to ensure artists, composers, and producers fully leverage these licences to protect both their creative works and financial interests.'
