Meet the UAE racing driver who is planting trees to turn his sport into a sustainability platform
A hugely talented driver who is driving for Porsche's title-winning W&S team in the ADAC GT4 Germany Championship, Robinson is now a passionate advocate of green initiatives.
With his #DrivenToZero project, launched in association with Evertreen, a leading eco-friendly platform which encourages companies to reduce their carbon footprint, Robinson plants one tree for every 75 kilometres that he races.
'I launched DrivenToZero to help offset my footprint from all the travel, all the racing, because motorsport isn't a very sustainable career path. But I'm trying to make it as sustainable as possible,' Robinson told the Khaleej Times.
As part of the initiative, Robinson will plant a tree each time he completes a trip from the local airport to the track and as many as six trees for every return flight from the UAE to Germany.
'We've already planted 1,000 trees in Madagascar and Indonesia, and that, I think, roughly equates to about 21,000 kilos of CO₂,' he said.
'So, the plan is to plant 70 more trees this season, on top of the 1000 that have already been planted, just to try and make a difference. I hope that other people can see it and try to contribute as well.'
A five-time UAE Karting champion who grew up watching Formula One and Australian V8 Supercars Championships, Robinson wants to carve a niche of his own as a racing driver on the track.
Off it, he hopes to become the driving force behind motorsport's sustainability projects.
'I draw a lot of inspiration from the UAE where I began my journey as a racing driver. It's not just the great sporting culture, but the UAE's initiatives for a sustainable world have really inspired me,' said who recently secured his first ADAC GT4 podium finish at Norisring.
'It's a country which has hosted events like the COP28 and launched so many other pioneering green projects.
'All those great initiatives from the UAE have inspired me to use my platform of motorsport responsibly and try to make a difference. Now with every tree we plant, I hope it will encourage more and more people to act responsibly towards the world that we call home.'

Ombudsman storms to victory in G1 Juddmonte International
Ombudsman registered a second top-level success and avenged his Eclipse Stakes defeat as he decisively beat Delacroix in the G1 Juddmonte International, with Birr Castle running an extraordinary race to take third in the York showpiece on Wednesday. Supplemented into the race to ensure a strong pace, Birr Castle lived up his duties as Rab Havlin sent the Andre Fabre-trained five-year-old into an early 10-length advantage. Danon Decile raced in second, with William Buick happy to track the Dubai Sheema Classic winner on Ombudsman in third. Birr Castle streaked further clear and had around 20 lengths in hand over his five rivals at the top of the straight. The pack started to close approaching the final quarter-mile, with Night Of Thunder colt Ombudsman unleashing a potent turn of foot to reel in the leader just inside the final furlong. Ombudsman powered clear to become only the third horse to win the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and Juddmonte International in the same year. Eclipse victor Delacroix made late gains to snatch second from Birr Castle inside the final half-furlong, finishing three and a half lengths adrift of the impressive John & Thady-Gosden trained winner. John Gosden said: 'I realised when the Japanese jockey took back, I thought 'uh oh', and then at the two-furlong pole, I thought it looked dangerous. Luckily, when they started properly racing, Ombudsman showed that brilliant turn of foot, and William said he went from second gear straight to fifth. He went into overdrive and won well, clearly from Delacroix, so that settles the Eclipse story, which was a muddling affair. 'The pacemaker is a proper Black Type horse from France with a turn of foot. He was cruising along and then kicked, taking another five lengths out of the field. All is well that ends well, but I can tell you that it was a nervous time. 'The obvious races for Ombudsman are the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown and the Champion Stakes at Ascot. He is entered in the Arc, but I would not want to run him in deep ground. He has that wonderful acceleration, which is hard to show in heavy ground. The mile and a half at Del Mar could be a possibility. We will see how he is when we get him home and go from there. 'We always thought Ombudsman was top class, but he had an injury at two and then we brought him along gently as a three-year-old. He is a very smart horse, although there is no doubt that when the ground is slow, he does not like it. He could be the dominant horse over this distance, provided the ground is not soft or heavy.'

Asia Cup in UAE: Samson's place is in bit of danger, says Ashwin
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes Sanju Samson's chances in the playing XI are in "a bit of danger" after the inclusion of Shubman Gill in the team for the upcoming Asia Cup (September 9-28) in the UAE. The Indian team for the Asia Cup was announced on Tuesday, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the squad and Gill as his deputy. Speaking on his YouTube channel, 'Ash ki Baat', Ashwin said: "What will make me even more sad is that there are high chances that you have announced him as the vice-captain, so Sanju Samson's place is in a bit of danger. The matter is sealed. Sanju is not going to play because Shubman Gill will play. If you want to play Gill, you have to play him at three, and Sanju will open the batting, but that too is not going to happen." Samson has performed brilliantly as an opener for India alongside Abhishek Sharma. Since the last T20 World Cup, he has scored 487 runs in 17 T20Is with three hundreds (average of 34.78). Meanwhile, Jitesh Sharma has been picked as a backup wicketkeeper-batter for Samson. Earlier this year, Sharma hit a blistering 85 not out off just 33 deliveries (8 fours, 6 sixes) to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru pull off the third-highest successful run chase in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history as the RCB chased down 228 against Lucknow Super Giants with eight balls to spare. Praising the wicketkeeper-batter, Ashwin said, "I am very happy for Jitesh Sharma, a well-earned position for him. He played a great knock for RCB against LSG." India will kick off their Asia Cup campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, with both fixtures set to be played in Dubai. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. If India finish at the top of Group A, then all of their Super 4 matches will be held in Dubai. But if India finish second, then one of their Super 4 clashes will be held in Abu Dhabi and the remaining two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage will run from September 20 to 26. Dubai will host the final, which is scheduled for September 28.

Tanish, Naseer, Tanveer in Desert Vipers team for ILT20 Development Tournament
Tanish Suri, Ali Naseer and Khuzaima Bin Tanveer are among 15 UAE players selected to represent the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 Development Tournament scheduled to be played between August 24 and September 3 in Dubai. A draft was held on August 18 at the Dubai International Stadium and attended by representatives of all six teams involved. Jack Luffman, the Desert Vipers Development Lead, headed the Vipers contingent at the draft, where a selection of fifteen was made from a pool of 350 UAE players. Luffman, who has been heavily involved in scouting local talent in his role as Development Lead for the Desert Vipers, said he was especially proud of how far fast bowler Khuzaima Bin Tanveer has come along since being discovered by the Vipers at the Development Tournament last year. 'We have managed to retain Khuzaima for the Development Tournament and what is great is that he has already been retained by the first team for season four,' said Luffman. 'While he has not quite qualified yet for the UAE (based on residency rules), I am pretty confident that once that qualification is reached, he will be straight in. I think he is the best pace bowler in the country by a fair margin.' Speaking about some of the other players to look out for at this year's Development Tournament, he added: 'We are delighted that we managed to secure Nilansh Keswani, a young left-arm spinner, who again has been in and around the UAE side, but has had a very good domestic D50 tournament in recent times. 'Other players to look out for are Nabeel Aziz, another young spinner, Sanjay Pahal, an all-rounder, and batter Mayank Mayank, who we are delighted to have with us. He scored a lot of runs in this Development Tournament last year so hopefully he can do the same for us this year. 'The players can all put themselves in the shop window and see where that leads, whether that is with us as the Vipers or with another franchise. 'I think that is the great thing about this (Development) tournament: yes, I am looking at a list of fifteen players here that will be our priority during this next ten to fourteen days but we will obviously keep an eye on everything else that is going on and relay that back to our senior coaching team. So I think that is the advantage of a short, intense, local tournament.' Fifteen of the leading players from the UAE will not be involved in the tournament because of a T20I tri-series between UAE, Afghanistan and Pakistan that takes place in August and September but Luffman believes this will not impact the quality of the Development Tournament. 'Some might say the quality will be reduced but I just think that makes it even more competitive,' he said. 'That is because there are a lot more players who probably have not had the opportunity to play at this level previously. I think that players will be really up for it. They will be well prepared and really determined to do well. 'And that, of course, just brings the level of those games up a bit more with the competitiveness, the will to win, the will to get one over on your mates. 'I am really looking forward to it. I think the quality will be high. I think the desire is there for all people to see these young and up and coming cricketers as they try and make it to the big stage. And what a great way to try and do it at the ICC Academy. I think there will be lots of runs scored as there usually are there because it is quite small. 'I am pretty sure there will be some exciting cricket to watch and hopefully the Vipers will be at the forefront of that.' Vipers Development squad: Tanish Suri (wicketkeeper), Daniel Pawson (wicketkeeper), Mayank Mayank (batter), Usman Pandit (batter): Basil Hameed (batter): Arron Lilley (batter), Ali Naseer (all-rounder), Sanjay Pahal (all-rounder), Taimoor Ali (all-rounder), Nilansh Keswani (left-arm spin), Nabeel Aziz (left-arm spin), Angad Nehru (right-arm spin), Khuzaima Bin Tanveer (fast bowler), Awais Ahmed (fast bowler), Hafiz Almas Ayub (fast bowler).
