
'Salty soup': climate threat to vital lagoon ecosystems
Yet a warming climate paired with competition for water upstream is degrading these ecological hotspots, ramping up their salt content and putting marine life under stress.
Emerging research suggests the potential for lagoon wetlands to act as carbon sinks - when an ecosystems draws down more carbon dioxide than it releases - is hindered when in a degraded state.
University of Adelaide microbial ecologist Christopher Keneally said the habitats tend to emit more methane and nitrous oxide, both potent greenhouse gas emissions, when in poor shape.
His post-doctoral research focused on the Ramsar-listed Coorong in South Australia, the traditional lands of the Ngarrindjeri people, underlines the importance of keeping these critical habitats in good health.
It's not just an Australian problem, he explained, with brackish wetlands in arid and temperate climate zones worldwide under threat from rising temperatures.
Characterised by somewhat choked ocean access, lagoons are already under pressure from human activity as freshwater use by towns, farms and industry leaves less for the environment at the end of river basins.
Now higher rates of evaporation under rising temperatures, less rainfall, and sea level rise bringing in more saltwater from the ocean are contributing to higher salt and nutrient concentrations.
"A single hot, dry summer, like the one we have recently experienced, can completely shift this important habitat into a salty, green soup," Dr Keneally said.
Such conditions upset the invisible and delicate "microbiomes" of lagoon waters, with microbial diversity diminished while salt-tolerant species survive.
Unbalanced microbial communities can potentially lead to harmful algae blooms and low-oxygen "dead zones" that kill fish.
In addition, microbial species with anaerobic metabolisms favour high salinity environments. These species tend to produce methane, undermining the habitat's role as a productive carbon sink.
While an emerging area of research, Dr Keneally said estimations of methane production were "probably underestimated" and should be better integrated into global climate models.
Occasional heavy rainfall and floods serve to "freshen up" coastal wetlands, rebalancing salt and other nutrient levels, as occurred in the South Australia's Coorong region in 2022.
Yet sporadic downpours cannot be relied upon.
"Conditions might improve for a couple of years, but those high rainfall events are not dependable, and in the dry periods, we often see permanent losses of biodiversity, Dr Keneally said.
Careful management of freshwater releases to keep salinity and nutrient levels at optimal levels was billed as part of the solution.
Listed as an internationally-important wetland under the Ramsar convention for migratory birds in the 1980s, the Coorong has long been a research priority and its condition taken seriously.
The Millennium Drought led to the creation of the Murray Darling Basin to better manage water flows in the region, though balancing the needs of irrigators, towns and the environment has long been a fraught issue.
Long-time Coorong fisherman Glen Hill believes the limited water reserved for the environment - half the amount recommended by scientists - should be released more strategically.
The owner of Coorong Wild Seafood said the north of the lagoon was in great shape as freshwater from the river mouth could be easily released into it, while the more isolated south area was in a "terrible" state.
He said better-timed water releases to coincide with favourable winds and weather conditions could help more freshwater enter the troubled southern lagoon.
Mr Hill has been fishing the area for the prized Yellow-eye mullet and other commercially-important species for decades.
Situated at the end of the Murray Darling Basin, Mr Hill said the Coorong was a highly productive fishery thanks to the high levels of nutrient "building blocks" swept downstream.
Yet he was acutely familiar with the "domino effect" of harmfully-high salinity levels, knocking out species low on the food chain and leaving fish with little to eat.
"When you get to around two times sea water salinity, things start to really go wrong," he said.
A spokesperson from the South Australian Department for Environment and Water said the government was committed to protecting the Coorong's ecological character.
"This work is achieved by optimising delivery of water for the environment and investing in infrastructure and restoration strategies to improve and protect the health of the system," the spokesperson said.
The health of the lagoon vastly improved during the 2022 River Murray floods but the spokesperson said more needed to be done to restore its long-term health.
This included refining freshwater flows and working with other basin states to ensure climate science informs its broader management.

What causes earthquakes? How common are they in Australia?
A magnitude-5.6 earthquake rattled parts of south-east Queensland near the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. People reported feeling tremors as far north as Rockhampton and as far south as Glen Innes in New South Wales. With Australia's most significant earthquake disaster occurring more than 35 years ago, many people consider quakes to be quite rare in Australia. But it turns out they're more common than you'd think. "Earthquakes are caused by movements underground that generate sound waves that travel through the Earth," University of Adelaide earth sciences lecturer Derrick Hasterok says. "These most commonly occur along faults where the crust on either side slide past each other very rapidly." The most common and severe earthquakes happen along the boundaries of huge slabs of rock that form the Earth's outer crust called tectonic plates, Geoscience Australia says. Over time, these plates move around the surface of the Earth in a process the United States Geological Survey likens to "slow-moving bumper cars repeatedly clustering together and then separating". Australia is at the centre of its own plate, called the Australian Plate. That means there aren't any major plate boundaries within Australia, unlike other landmasses that are on different plates. However, there are plate boundaries near Australia. "The plate boundaries include the Indonesian trench, the Southern Alpine Fault in New Zealand, and the Australian-Antarctic ridge in the Southern Ocean," Dr Hasterok says. "The vast majority of earthquakes on the Australian Plate occur along these plate boundaries." While we may think that earthquakes are only caused by plates rubbing together, other types of earthquakes exist. Dr Hasterok explains the concept of intraplate earthquakes. "The earthquakes that happen within Australia occur away from plate boundaries along old pre-existing faults that rupture in response to forces transferred through the crust from the plate boundaries," he says. "These faults are not always recognisable because of the time that has passed since they were last active may have covered them with new layers of rock. "The reason why earthquakes in Australia are concentrated in specific regions has to do with the orientation of the faults relative to the stresses and the local weakness of the crust." "There are a few thousand earthquakes within Australia each year, though most are too small to be noticed and are barely detectable by seismometers," Dr Hasterok says. The Queensland quake wasn't the only one to occur in the past week. Last Wednesday, a magnitude-3.2 earthquake was recorded in Mornington, south of Melbourne. On Tuesday, a magnitude-3.6 quake was recorded near Kingscote on Kangaroo Island near Adelaide. Australia experiences an average of 100 earthquakes of a magnitude of 3 or higher every year, according to Geoscience Australia. We get stronger quakes — a magnitude of 5 or more — about every one to two years. And we'll get a magnitude-6 or more quake every 10 years. However, Australia is in a better position than other countries. "When it comes to earthquakes, living in Australia is much safer than other parts of the world, as Australia is well away from tectonic plate boundaries where large earthquakes occur more frequently," a Geoscience Australia explainer says. We typically talk about earthquakes in context of magnitude and intensity. Intensity is about the amount of shaking felt at ground level. Magnitude speaks to the energy released by an earthquake and is measured based on recordings made on scientific instruments called seismometers, The greater the magnitude, the more energy released. Here's how America's Michigan Technological University describes the scale: But it's important to remember that magnitude alone doesn't indicate the severity of damage caused by an earthquake — the depth of the quake and the population density of the affected area are also key factors. The highest magnitude earthquake ever recorded in Australia was at Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, in 1988. That earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 6.6, Geosciences Australia says. It was part of a trio of large events greater than 6.0. The second largest was at Meckering, Western Australia, in 1968, with a magnitude of 6.5. In fact, all of the highest magnitude earthquakes in Australia happened in either the Northern Territory or Western Australia. However, the quakes that caused the most damage were in NSW and South Australia. The 1989 earthquake in Newcastle, NSW is considered "the most significant natural disasters in Australia's history", Geoscience Australia said. While Newcastle quake was a magnitude-5.6, it affected a densely populated area. Thirteen people died, 160 people were hospitalised, and some 50,000 buildings were damaged. They can. "Large earthquakes often create clusters with smaller preshocks or aftershocks that occur as the stress changes around the main rupture," Dr Hasterok says. "These aftershocks can last for weeks or months after the mainshock, though with moderate earthquakes it may only be for a few hours or days."

Prize shines light on top Aussie women in STEM research
Women working in science, technology, engineering or mathematics sectors are being encouraged to apply for a world-first prize for emerging researchers. The inaugural Marie Krogh Young Women in Science prize, launched by healthcare company Novo Nordisk, will consist of a $50,000 cash prize as well as $5000 for seven finalists. It's named in honour of Danish physician Marie Krogh (1874-1943), who pioneered treatment for diabetes as one of the first women in Denmark to earn a doctorate in medicine. In Australia, women make up 37 per cent of university enrolments in STEM and hold just 15 per cent of jobs in those sectors. The prize aims to recognise mid-career women in STEM for their contributions to science and medicine and recognise future leaders, Murdoch Children's Research Institute director Kathryn North said. "Supporting the next generation of women in science and medicine isn't just about equity, it's about excellence," Professor North said. The judging panel is made up of several esteemed scientists and doctors, including Royal Children's Hospital centre for community child health director Sharon Goldfeld. It was exciting for an international company to recognise the contributions of Australian women in STEM, Professor Goldfeld told AAP. "Awards like this try to right some of the imbalance in the sector. It's not that there are no women in STEM, there are amazing women, but this is a leg up," she said. "We talk about the 'cliff' in research where often early career researchers are tracking along well but then can't quite make it to the next stage. A prize like this helps to fix that." Judges would be on the lookout for applicants who could communicate their research well, alongside excellent ideas. "I am blown away by the amazing women scientists of today and their ability to traverse all sorts of sciences and think cleverly about the way they communicate," Prof Goldfeld said. "We are looking for the STEM researcher who is not only excellent but also able to say why their research project is going to make a difference." Applications are now open, with finalists to be honoured at a Parliament House reception and awards dinner in Canberra in November 2025.

Feeling depressed or out of sorts after the weekend? You could have 'social apnoea'
It's common to feel tired and apprehensive on a Monday morning, and that can be especially true after a big weekend. New research has mapped how people's quality of sleep changes throughout the week, and has found patterns between fatigue and behaviour. It's estimated around one billion people worldwide have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), a condition that impacts their quality of sleep. Australian researchers have found this underlying condition is more prevalent on weekends than on weekdays, and they have labelled this phenomenon — 'social apnoea'. It can affect anyone, even if you don't typically show symptoms of OSA during the week. So why is that the case? 'Social jet lag' Professor Danny Eckert, a sleep health expert from Flinders University, was one of the lead researchers in the study that was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He described social apnoea as a kind of "social jet lag", a feeling that can arise after the weekend, when our behaviours often differ from those on weekdays. "We know that people who smoke tend to smoke more on the weekend. We know that people who drink tend to drink more on the weekend," he told SBS News. "They are two sort of lifestyles or social factors if you like, that are very influential in the way we sleep and breathe." Eckert said another key change in weekend behaviour is that our sleep patterns often change, which can cause problems with our sleep quality and overall mood. People who sleep in on weekends were found to have a 50 per cent higher risk of developing a sleep disorder, according to the study. "Our circadian rhythm, or our body clock, is slow to move; it takes several days to adjust," he said. "So if we suddenly change our sleep timing, and we've all experienced this at different times with jet lag and these kinds of things, we're sleeping out of whack from what our body wants us to." What are the long-term effects? Weekend surge in sleep-disordered breathing may heighten the risk of serious health conditions, according to the research. This includes heart disease, depression, dementia, and extreme fatigue. The research found people under 60 and males were two groups more likely to suffer from social apnoea. While the exact reason is unclear, Eckert said it's likely due to behavioural factors. "We know that men tend to be drinking more alcohol than women and perhaps they're having later nights and going to sleep after women," he said. "We also know that men get sleep apnoea more, so they are more prone to 'social apnoea' in the first place." Eckert said beyond seeking clinical treatment for sleep apnoea, there are some lifestyle changes you can make to combat social apnoea. In particular, going to bed and waking up at consistent times can help establish a healthier sleep pattern. "If people are feeling tired during the day, having some trouble staying asleep, or maybe they are waking up with morning headaches, maybe they're being told that they snore loudly; these are all warning signs that you may have sleep apnoea, and it's worth having a conversation with your GP."
