Mariska Hargitay's career was predicted by a foul-mouthed Long Island psychic: 'I don't give a rat's ass what you think'
Mariska Hargitay made an arresting visit to the Call Her Daddy podcast this week, speaking about her new documentary portrait of her mother Jayne Mansfield, My Mom Jayne, as well as her work on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which she's been on, in her words, "since 1926."
At the beginning of her career, Hargitay was fairly certain her path was in comedy — not playing a detective for 26 seasons — and she felt pretty entrenched in Los Angeles, living in a large house with several friends. But a visit to the East Coast indicated that her life was about to change.
"I used to go to New York twice a year and just see theater. I was 34, and I come to New York, and a friend of mine said, 'You have to go to this psychic on Long Island.' I didn't even know where Long Island was," Hargitay recalled.
She continued, "So I drive out to this guy's house on Long Island, and he gives me a psychic reading. And because my mom was famous, I was like, you are just probably gonna Google me, you know, Jayne Mansfield's daughter, and then come up with some bulls---. So I sit down with this guy and he says, 'You see that face?' I have this on [a] recording. 'You see that face right now?' I said, 'Yeah.' He goes, 'You're gonna be famous for that face, that face, that serious face.'"
A little taken aback, Hargitay replied, "I'm gonna be a comedian. And he says, this is my favorite thing I think anyone's ever said to me. He goes like this: 'I don't give a rat's ass what you think.'"
Continuing, the psychic said, "'You're gonna be famous for that face.' And then he says to me, 'And you're moving to New York.' And I said, 'No, I have this gorgeous house my father built.' I was living in a house with, like, 32 roommates because I had this house and it had five rooms. I rented out rooms, so I'm actually living out an episode of Friends. Not an episode, but the whole season because I had so many roommates. [So] I was like, 'I live in L.A. This is my town. I have my roommates. I have my house.'"
Then the punchline: "Swear to God, six months later, I got SVU."
And since that time, she has been a New York City staple — unable to walk to the bagel store without people giving her hugs and telling the woman who plays Detective Olivia Benson all about their personal struggles. (Something Hargitay takes in great stride, as she explains in the podcast.)
Importantly, however, is the phrase rat's ass.
"He said, 'I don't give a rat's ass'," Hargitay repeated. "How great is rat's ass?"

Mariska Hargitay Recalls Being 'Thrown in the Slammer' After Arrest in Her 20s
On the latest episode of Call Her Daddy, Mariska Hargitay revealed she was arrested in her 20s Hargitay, who had been filming a music video for Ronnie Milsap at the time, says she was "thrown in the slammer" after speeding through a stop sign on her way home Hargitay's documentary My Mom Jayne debuts on HBO Max June 27, while Cooper's documentary Call Her Alex is available now on HuluTurns out, even Olivia Benson has been to jail! Mariska Hargitay joined Alex Cooper on the most recent episode of Call Her Daddy, where the Law & Order: SVU star shared that after starring in a music video in the 1980s, she briefly ended up behind bars. "I was arrested and thrown in the slammer .... this is an excellent story," Hargitay, 61, said of what happened after she finished filming the video for Ronnie Milsap's "She Loves My Car" clad in a bright pink costume, lipstick and lots of makeup to rush home to see her parents before they left on a trip to Africa. "[I'm in] no shoes, like in fishnets and a questionable outfit, let's just say," she added of the get-up. "I've always been known to have a bit of a lead foot and stop signs, well, you know, I always saw it as optional. I've changed my way since then, but I would not stop. It was just about like rolling through the red light. I'm not proud of it and don't do this at home!" "I was trying to race home to see my parents," she continued, "all of a sudden, [they] pull me over. And they're like, 'Ma'am, you just ran the stop sign.' I was like, 'I'm going home to see my parents. Please, please.'" After Cooper urged Hargitay to reveal why rolling a stop sign would warrant an arrest, the actress revealed that at the time, she had $3,000 in outstanding parking tickets. "Because at UCLA, I was late to class and I didn't always use my parking pass because the garage where my classes were was so far away," she explained of her time in college. "I was like, 'I'll just be fine. I'll be really quick. I'll just go to class and come back out,' and I would get tickets every day. And I was in like a fantasy denial world. And so I had $3,000." The outstanding tickets compounded by Hargitay's outfit post-music video had the officer seemingly "making a lot of judgment about me," she said, "and he puts me in his car, locks me in the back and throws me in the clink." Hargitay then said she knew she couldn't call her parents back and tell them about her predicament after she'd just informed them she'd be home to see them off on their trip, so she instead called to say ''Hey. Oh, the video, the shoot has gone over. I don't know that I can [make it].'" "[So] they threw me in the clink and I'm standing there and everyone's like, 'What are you in for?' And I asked everybody what they were in for. But I make friends with everyone and then they all gave me phone numbers," she said. After a friend eventually came to bail Hargitay out, she made good on those phone calls. "When I left, I was calling, 'Hey, I just wanna let you know, um, your friend is in Santa Monica jailhouse.' And it was so funny. People were like, 'What are you in for?' And I was like, 'I got a speeding ticket!'" Hargitay's documentary My Mom Jayne debuts on HBO Max June 27, while Cooper's documentary Call Her Alex is available now on Hulu. Why Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom Split After 7 Years Together
THE RUNDOWN Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have split after seven years together, Us Weekly reports. The couple got engaged in 2019 and welcomed their daughter, 4-year-old Daisy Dove, in 2020. A source close to them told Us Weekly, 'Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable. It's not contentious at the moment. Katy is of course upset but is relieved to not have to go through another divorce, as that was the worst time in her life.' The breakup was 'a long time coming. [Things] have been tense for months,' the source said, adding, '[They] have been living apart since Katy has been on tour.' A second source explained distance contributed to their issues: 'Katy has been very busy working, and they are apart often. That has caused tension.' The insider noted that despite their years-long engagement, they 'never set a date for the wedding or got around to planning anything, and Orlando is 'over it.'' On June 13, a source told People that their relationship was 'pretty much done,' adding that the former couple does not 'really see them[selves] being able to turn things around here.' The issues had been there for quite some time, the source shared: 'It's been breaking down the last couple of months and isn't looking good.' A few days earlier, several sources told the publication that tension rose during the release of her latest album, 143. 'Katy was deeply frustrated following the reception of her new album,' one source said. 'It made her very stressed. Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension.' A second insider said of Perry, 'She was also disappointed in some of the tour reviews. It's put stress on their relationship.' The former couple's last public outing was in March 2025 at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. During the weekend of June 21 and 22, Bloom was seen with Daisy in Perth, Australia, where Perry was touring. The couple wasn't photographed together. They have broken up before, taking time apart in 2017. In September 2024, Perry shared during her Call Her Daddy interview, 'We weren't really in it from day one. He was because he had just done a huge time of celibacy, and he had set intentions. I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was like, I can't do this anymore. I need to swim in a different pond, but I had to do a lot real work.' She added of her mentality versus his, 'He wasn't playing that cat-mouse game anymore. I was like, 'This is boring. I'm moving on.' I was so used to this push-pull. Because once you have it. I was playing games.' She then shared that she and Bloom attended couples therapy to help maintain their relationship. 'We want to we're in our relationship is to become better humans so we can raise this beautiful human being, [Daisy Dove],' she said. 'It's been different layers. The more we do the work, the more we find the next level. And sometimes we get stuck, and we're like, 'OK, let's go in to do the work and this is going to be annoying, and I don't want to do it. We don't have the time. I'm tired.' But we're gonna do it. And we find the next level. That's why we're continuing in the relationship.'
